Medications For ADHD
The use of medication can help those with ADHD concentrate, feel less impulsive, and develop new abilities. They can also enhance the quality of their interactions with others and improve school performance.
Due to shortages many people are unable to obtain their medications. Iam Psychiatry are storing up or rationing supplies. But a taskforce is trying to ease the problem.
Stimulants
Treatments for ADHD are generally classified as stimulants. This means they boost the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. This helps you to control your impulses and concentrate on the task at hand.
Stimulants are the most frequently prescribed type of UK ADHD medication. The methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) and amphetamine-salts (such Adderall) families are included within this group. Both drugs function in a different way, but both reduce the amount of dopamine released in the brain during an impulse.
In Europe and the UK, the methylphenidate drug family is the most widely used. It comprises methylphenidate, dexamfetamine and lisdexamfetamine. These medications are available in either short-acting or long-acting versions or a combination of "immediate release" and "modified release". Short-acting tablets last between two and three hours. Modified release medicines can last for up to twelve hours.
In the last year, the government issued an alert to patients warning about shortages of these ADHD medication. This was due to manufacturing issues as well as the increase in global demand. Certain products were not available for a period of time but they are now again available.
As the supply of these ADHD medications improved and more adults were able to access these medications. For the first time, adults in England are receiving these drugs more frequently than children. In the process, an increasing number women are being diagnosed with ADHD. They are now receiving the same medications as their male counterparts.
More than 200,000 adults are now being treated with a stimulant ADHD medication in the UK. However, this is just a tiny portion of the estimated 2.6 million people in the UK with the condition. The choice to take or not take medication is usually an individual choice. Some people opt to take medication, whereas others prefer therapy.
There are also non-stimulant ADHD medications available, which have a different impact on the body. This type of medication increases the noradrenaline levels in the brain. Noradrenaline acts as a messenger chemical that transmits information between nerve cells. This can help improve concentration and lowering of impulses, but it takes a few weeks to have an effect on the brain and this is the reason that non-stimulant ADHD medications are often required to be monitored by psychiatrists more closely. It's also more expensive than stimulants. Nevertheless, it is important for adults to be aware of the options available for them and to talk about this with their GP or ADHD service. They can provide more information about the options available to them and their family. This is particularly important considering that the availability of these medications is being affected by recent UK-wide shortages.
