ADHD Medication in the UK
ADHD medications are prescribed to adults by a psychiatrist if they are able to make a diagnosis. The NHS is currently experiencing an acute shortage of central nervous system stimulants, such as ADHD medications.
The shortage is caused by manufacturing issues and a rising global demand. It is expected to be resolved between October and December 2023.
1. Adderall
Adderall is the brand name of a mixture of amphetamine salts. It's a potent stimulant that when used correctly can help people with ADHD focus, stay on task and manage their impulses. It is prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.
The FDA approved the first drug that could treat both conditions. It is a central nervous stimulant that boosts norepinephrine levels and other neurotransmitters inside the brain. These chemicals increase concentration and alertness for those with narcolepsy.
Doctors prescribe Adderall to those suffering from ADHD in tablet form or liquid. It can be taken as needed, or multiple times throughout the day to reduce symptoms of the condition. Adderall users may experience side effects such as dry mouth, headaches, and stomach upset. Some people may develop a tolerance for the medication and need to take more than what their doctor recommends to get the same results.
Adderall is not recommended for those with certain heart conditions. adhd without medication can increase heart rate and cause anxiety, which is a risk for those with heart issues or an history of heart disease. People with glaucoma, kidney or liver problems should consult their physicians prior to taking it. Adderall could cause birth defects for babies born to mothers who took it during pregnancy. Animal studies have proven that the drug may cause birth defects in a fetus. However, there is not enough data to know the effects it has on the pregnant fetus.
Stimulants can slow the growth rate of children, but the difference is not significant and children typically catch up when they reach the age of adulthood. They can also trigger psychosis, a condition that is a mix of hallucinations, delusions, and other symptoms.
Adderall is classified as a Schedule II substance, which means it has an extremely high risk of abuse. People who don't have ADHD can use Adderall to feel more energetic and lose weight. Illegal users often mix it with cocaine to enhance the effects. It is also a factor in tests for drugs used for sports or at work.
3. Concerto
Like Adderall and Vyvanse Concerta is an extended-release medication that is taken every day in the morning. It is believed to work by increasing levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. This improves concentration as well as other ADHD symptoms. It is crucial to take this medication as recommended by a doctor. Do not increase the dosage without a prescription from a doctor and this could increase side effects. Store Concerta at room temperature and in a place that is out of reach of children.
Insomnia is another frequent side effect that can make it hard to fall asleep. It is recommended to try to take it at the same time every day. You can track your medication with an alarm clock or pill reminder. This drug falls into pregnancy category C. It is only recommended to use it if the benefits outweigh any risk to the developing baby. Long-term use of methylphenidate is not recommended as it could lead to dependence.
This medication can also trigger tics. These are unintentional, frequent actions or sounds. This can be characterized by eye blinks and head bobbing as well as humming. The majority of people don't experience it however, If you do, talk to your doctor.
4. Focalin
Focalin is a medication that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. It contains the active ingredient dexmethylphenidate and is a stimulant for the central nervous system to decrease the impulsivity of people with ADHD.
Like other stimulant medications, Focalin can help increase levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. These neurotransmitters aid in the communication between nerve cells and improve vigilance, attention and impulse control. They are therefore effective ADHD drugs. The dosage of Focalin differs based on the age of the patient. It may be either long or short-acting. The immediate-release tablets have a short-acting effect while the extended-release tablets have a longer-acting.
Long-term usage of Focalin may cause serious adverse consequences. Focalin has been linked with depression, particularly for those who aren't predisposed. The reason for this is that the medication causes neurotransmitters levels to remain high for a longer period of time. Joanna Moncrieff is a professor of psychiatry as well as a psychiatrist at University College London. She has spent hours fighting what she believes to be an overprescription of stimulant medications for mental disorders.
Focalin can also cause psychomotor retardation or agitation for certain people. Some individuals may feel temporarily energized and euphoric. Other typical Focalin side effects include sleeplessness and drowsiness. Additionally, patients may sometimes develop tolerance to the drug, where they need higher and higher doses to achieve the same effect. This could cause dependence and addiction.
To reduce the risk of Focalin addiction doctors should review their patients' risk and be aware of indications and signs of abuse, misuse or addiction. They should tell patients to keep the drug in a secure location and not to distribute it to anyone else. They should also educate patients on the dangers of accidental overdose and provide them with instructions on how to dispose of any unused medication.
Focalin unlike other ADHD medications does not immediately start to work. The effects of Focalin appear in the first three hours following the dose and can last for up to four hours. This is why it is frequently prescribed with other non-medication therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
