Acute respiratory illness caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) involved the whole globe within no time. Various studies published globally have shown variable severity of disease and mortality. The objective of our study was to describe clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the disease in our setup.

Cross-sectional analytical study was performed at Department of Haematology in Pak Emirates Military Hospital affiliated with Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from March-July 2020. We included 735 patients confirmed by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase-chain-reaction test for subacute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 of all ages, irrespective of gender and were classified in groups of severe and non-severe groups.
Data of blood and baseline characteristics were compared in between the two groups and found to be significant (p-value <0.001). The median age was 46.3 years, and 82 cases were only females. Receiver operator curve demonstrated larger area under the curve of NLR, d-NLR, and PLR and showed them as independent diagnostic biomarkers which were significantly associated with the severity of illness. Binary logistic regression performed in the form of forest plot also showed these factors were significantly linked with the severity (p-value <0.001).
NLR, d-NLR, and PLR along with pre-existing co morbidities can be used as an independent biomarker for the poor clinical outcome of COVID-19 illness.

Remdesivir is widely used for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but controversies regarding its efficacy still remain.
A retrospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate the effect of remdesivir on clinical and virologic outcomes of severe COVID-19 patients from June to July 2020. selleck compound Primary clinical endpoints included clinical recovery, additional mechanical ventilator (MV) support, and duration of oxygen or MV support. Viral load reduction by hospital day (HD) 15 was evaluated by calculating changes in cycle threshold (Ct) values.
A total of 86 severe COVID-19 patients were evaluated including 48 remdesivir-treated patients. Baseline characteristics were not significantly different between the two groups. Remdesivir was administered an average of 7.42 days from symptom onset. The proportions of clinical recovery of the remdesivir and supportive care group at HD 14 (56.3% and 39.5%) and HD 28 (87.5% and 78.9%) were not statistically different. The proportion of patients requiring MV support by HD 28 was significantly lower in the remdesivir group than in the supportive care group (22.9% vs. 44.7%,
= 0.032), and MV duration was significantly shorter in the remdesivir group (average, 1.97 vs. 5.37 days;
= 0.017). Analysis of upper respiratory tract specimens demonstrated that increases of Ct value from HD 1-5 to 11-15 were significantly greater in the remdesivir group than the supportive care group (average, 10.19 vs. 5.36;
= 0.007), and the slope of the Ct value increase was also significantly steeper in the remdesivir group (average, 5.10 vs. 2.68;
= 0.007).

Despite the advances in neonatology, the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is increasing. It is important to prevent the development of BPD in the first place. The online BPD outcome estimator from National Institute of Children Health and Human Development and Neonatal Research Network is available. However, it is not applicable for Asians. Moreover, limits are set for birth weight and gestational weeks excluding those who may still have BPD. The aim of this study was to develop a prediction model for BPD using first hour perinatal and neonatal factors in Korean very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs).
Data were collected for 8,022 VLBWIs with gestational age (GA) ≥ 22 weeks who were born between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016, and admitted to the neonatal intensive care units of the KNN. Multiple logistic regression models reanalyzed by stepwise selection with significant clinical indicators for BPD. PROC package was used to calculate the area under curve (AUC) and corresponding 95% co for the early prediction of BPD in Korean VLBWI. This study will contribute to the prediction of BPD in Asians especially Korean VLBWIs, not currently included in the NICHD BPD online BPD predictor. In addition, the predictive power may be continuously increased with the cumulative data of KNN.
From this study, high predictability was obtained using clinical parameters obtained within one hour of life. P value for prediction of each grade of BPD and equation for calculation was presented. It can be helpful for the early prediction of BPD in Korean VLBWI. This study will contribute to the prediction of BPD in Asians especially Korean VLBWIs, not currently included in the NICHD BPD online BPD predictor. In addition, the predictive power may be continuously increased with the cumulative data of KNN.
