PURPOSE OF REVIEW Approximately 20% of patients undergoing surgery develop persistent lower extremity pain following total knee arthroplasty. Animal studies have confirmed that prolonged tourniquet time increases the risk of endoneural ischemia and can mediate or modulate the development of chronic pain. The use of Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (NIRS) adjacent to nerve tissue, previously described as ONG has been shown to detect early neural compromise and has demonstrated clinical utility in carpal tunnel diagnosis. RECENT FINDINGS In this pilot study, we recruited 10 healthy adult volunteers to undergo oxyneurography (ONG) and sensory nerve conduction testing (sNCT). We performed testing on the upper and lower extremities in each individual. The tourniquet was applied followed by measurements of sNCT and ONG as described. We observed a significant drop in the mean ONG index at 3 and 5 min following tourniquet inflation in upper and lower extremities. Similar to raw ONG values, there was significant variability in sNCT measurements, which in general increased from baseline with tourniquet inflation. In the upper extremity, there was a significant increase in sNCT with tourniquet inflation, while in the lower extremity, there was a trend towards significance. The use of ONG can be supported as a diagnostic tool to detect nerve ischemia and to potentially reduce the incidence of tourniquet-mediated or -modulated neural ischemia and reduce the development of chronic post-tourniquet pain.The haloalkaliphilics are an important subset of extremophiles that grow in salt [upto 33% (wt/vol) NaCl] and alkaline pH (> 9). They are found in hypersaline environments especially in the brines in arid, coastal and deep sea locations, and in alkaline environments, such as soda soils, lakes and deserts. Some authors have described haloalkaliphilic bacteria as moderate halophilic bacteria, but the molecular and classical studies revealed that they belong to moderately to extremely halophilic bacteria and archaea. Organic solutes, such as glycine, betaine and other amino acid derivatives, sugars such as, sucrose and trehalose, and sugar alcohols present in the haloalkaliphilics help for their osmoadaptation, and also serve as stabilizers. Haloalkalphilics secrete exoenzymes like proteases, amylases, xylanases, cellulases and peroxidases which have potential industrial applications. They also produce bacteriorhodopsin, compatible solutes, pigments, biopolymers, secondary metabolites like biosurfactants, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and exopolysaccharides and antimicrobial/anticancer compounds. They have unique metabolic pathways which can be used to treat industrial pollutants, heavy metals and waste water.The original version of this article unfortunately contained a mistake. Proteasome inhibitor review Within these groups, communication about referral to genetic counseling appears challenging due to limited health literacy and cultural barriers. Our aim was to develop and evaluate a training program for healthcare professionals (breast surgeons and specialized nurses), to increase effective communication. We systematically developed a blended training program based on patients' and healthcare professionals' needs and preferences. Prior to the training, we assessed awareness, knowledge and self-efficacy of healthcare professionals. Acceptability and usefulness of the training program were assessed directly after the training. Healthcare professionals (n = 65) from 17 hospitals showed moderate to high awareness and knowledge about the prevalence and impact of limited health literacy. They were aware of cultural factors that influence communication. However, they did not feel confident in recognizing limited health literacy and their self-efficacy to communicate effectively with these patients was low. The training program was rated as acceptable and useful. Healthcare professionals lack confidence to effectively communicate with patients with limited health literacy or migrant background. The training program offers opportunities to improve communication about referral to breast cancer genetic counseling.Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a highly selective alpha2 adrenergic receptor agonist, is a commonly used anesthetic drug in surgical procedures. Previous studies have indicated that DEX exerts neuroprotective effects while the detailed mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Here, we aim to study the role of lncRNA SHNG16 in DEX-induced brain protection and its underlying molecular mechanism. The rats underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) surgery and oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD)-treated HT22 hippocampal neurons were treated with DEX, respectively. CCK8 was used to evaluate cell viability. sh-SHNG16 as well as miR-10b-5p mimics were transfected into hippocampal neurons to further explore the bio-function of SNHG16 and miR-10b-5p in vitro. Furthermore, the interactions between SHNG16 and miR-10b-5p, miR-10b-5p and BDNF gene were confirmed by dual-luciferase report assay. Our data revealed that DEX attenuated neurological damage of the MCAO rats and also increased the cell viability of the neurons significantly. Besides, expression of SHNG16 and BDNF were both downregulated while miR-10b-5p was upregulated in MCAO brain tissues or OGD treated neurons. DEX inhibited miR-10b-5p expression but increased SHNG16 and BDNF levels with a dosage effect. After transfection with sh-SHNG16 or miR-10b-5p mimics, the expression of BDNF protein was downregulated, accompanied with decreased neuron viability. Dual-luciferase assay showed that SHNG16 targeted on miR-10b-5p, which also could bind directly to the 3'-UTR sites of BDNF and negatively regulate its expression. In conclusion, DEX exerts neuroprotective in ischemic stroke via improving neuron damage, the underlying mechanism may be upregulating SHNG16 and BDNF via sponging miR-10b-5p.Evaluation of growth performances in Malabari goats was done with body weight and major morphometric traits, viz. body height, body length and chest girth at 6, 9 and 12 months, respectively. Data pertaining on 1082 Malabari goats spread over a period of 5 years (from 2014 to 2018) were used in the study. Least squares analysis of traits was done to adjust the effect of major significant non-genetic factors. Traits were analysed by using Varimax rotated principal component analysis (PCA) with Kaiser normalization to explain growth performances. Out of twelve principal components, PCA revealed four components explained about 67.78% of total variation. The first component (PC1) explained 28.02% of total variation. It was represented by significantly positive high loading of BH9, BH12 and BH6. The second component explained 15.090% of total variance with high loading of distance between BL9, BL6 and BL12. The third component explained 12.643% of variance and showed high component loadings for CG9, CG6 and CG12. The fourth factor accounted for 12.
