Stimulants
Stimulants are among the oldest of all ADHD drugs and are most likely to be prescribed first to those who need them. They boost the activity of the regions of your brain that regulate attention and aid in taking actions. There are short-acting stimulants which must be taken 2 or 3 times a day, and longer-acting ones which can be taken just once every day. Your doctor and you will choose the most effective stimulant for you based on your preferences, whether you can take pills or not, as well as the cost.

They can be taken in the form of tablets, capsules or liquids and typically begin to show effects within a matter of hours. They are suitable for both short - and long-term treatments and are extremely well-tolerated, with the most frequent adverse effects being loss of appetite, headaches and sleep problems.
Atomoxetine, also known as Vyvanse, is a selective inhibitor of noradrenaline uptake. This means it boosts the levels of noradrenaline in the brain. This helps improve concentration and reduce impulsive behaviour, but it can cause more serious adverse effects than methylphenidates or lisdexamfetamine. It can be taken as a daily tablet but it also comes in a modified-release version that can be taken only once per day.
