Here we tested the synergy of Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, an electroactive bacteria, and an electrical field, on chloramphenicol removal. Removal is increased two-fold by increasing the temperature from 30°C to 37°C. The cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometry tests demonstrated that G. sulfurreducens PCA catalyzed chloramphenicol chemical reduction with electrode as excusive electron donor. A critical voltage, -0.6 to -0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl, was discovered for chloramphenicol degradation with an increase of removal rate about 2.62-folds, from 31.06% to 81.41%. Combined removal with both G. sulfurreducens PCA and an electrical field increased the apparent rate constant and reached 82.77% removal at -0.5 V. Specially, the combined removal at -0.5 V even presented more robust removal efficiency compared to -0.6 V (78.64%) without G. sulfurreducens PCA. Mass spectrometry of degradation products indicates the reduction of nitro into amine groups, and dechlorination into less toxic compounds. Overall, combined biocatalysis and an electrical field is a promising method to remove antibiotics from polluted environments.This paper studies the impact of patient-generated ratings of primary care physicians in Norway. Norway has a universal health care system, with no available objective quality indicators. In May 2012, an online review platform that allows patients to rate their physician was launched. Relying on a difference-in-differences approach we show that higher-rated physicians see an increase in demand relative to lower-rated physicians. The effect is primarily driven by females and patients with high socioeconomic status. We find no indications that physicians change their practice style or supply of patient capacity in response to the ratings.
The UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world. Evidence in the United States suggests that mesothelioma may disproportionately affect military veterans. However, there has been no investigation of the experience of UK veterans living with mesothelioma. The Military Mesothelioma Experience Study (MiMES) aimed to understand the experience and health/support needs of British Armed Forces personnel/veterans with mesothelioma.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 veterans living with mesothelioma, and nine family members of veterans living with mesothelioma. Participants were recruited via charities and asbestos support groups. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.
Participants' experiences are presented using three themes, i) exposure to asbestos and awareness of asbestos related diseases, ii) using military strategies to cope with mesothelioma and iii) preferences for information and support. MiMES indicates that the nature and range of UK military veterans' asbestos expo veterans.A novel thermophilic, microaerophilic and anaerobic, hydrogen- sulphur- and thiosulphate-oxidising bacterium, designated MO1340T, was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal chimney collected from the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Cells were short, motile rods of 1.4-2.2μm length and 0.5-0.8μm width. Optimal growth was observed for a NaCl concentration of 2.5 % (w/v) at pH 6.5. As for other members of the genus Persephonella, strain MO1340T was strictly chemolithoautotrophic and could oxidise hydrogen, elemental sulphur or thiosulphate using oxygen as electron acceptor. Anaerobic nitrate reduction using hydrogen could also be performed. Each catabolic reaction had a different optimal growth temperature (65 to 75°C) and an optimal dissolved oxygen concentration (11.4 to 119.7 μM at 70°C for aerobic reactions) that varied according to the electron donors utilised. These experimental results are consistent with the distribution of these catabolic substrates along the temperature gradient observed in active hydrothermal systems. find more They strongly suggest that this adaptive strategy could confer a selective advantage for strain MO1340T in the dynamic part of the ecosystem where hot, reduced hydrothermal fluid mixes with cold, oxygenated seawater. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain MO1340T was a member of the genus Persephonella within the order Hydrogenothermales as it shared a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity less then 95.5 % and ANI respectively 75.66 % with closest described Persephonella (P. hydrogeniphila 29WT). On the basis of the physiological and genomic properties of the new isolate, the name Persephonella atlantica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MO1340T (=UBOCC-M-3359T =JCM 34026T).The assessment of renal function in birds is difficult because sensitive biomarkers are lacking. Previous studies have demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the exogenous creatinine clearance in pigeons, indicating the potential use of this technique for the assessment of renal function in birds. The aim of the study was to index the exogenous creatinine elimination rate by body surface area, enabling comparison between different species. Exploratory data on common buzzards (Buteo buteo), Eurasian eagle-owls (Bubo bubo), domestic goose (Anser anser domesticus) and racing pigeons (Columba livia) were collected and indexed by body surface area. A sterile creatinine solution was administered at a dose DM = 50 mg kg-1 i.m. into the deep pectoral muscle of 52 clinically healthy birds of the four species with different body masses. The time course of the plasma creatinine concentration was measured and analyzed by a parametric pharmacokinetic Bateman model, followed by indexing the exogenous creatinine clearance (ECC) by body surface area. The exploratory ECC values for birds with a mean body mass ranging from 0.42 kg (pigeon) to 8.2 kg (goose) were between 0.4261 mL min-1 dm-2 (CI 0.3882-0.4672) and 0.8717 mL min-1 dm-2 (CI 0.8091-0.9362). ECC indexed by body surface area turned out to be independent from body mass. Resulting exploratory data covering species with different body masses are comparable with published data from very complex studies of avian renal function.
