BACKGROUND There is potential clinical utility in tailoring patients' pain management based on behavioural tendencies. Previous work demonstrates a link between behavioural approach/inhibition and pain experience. OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship of pain intensity and duration with behavioural activation and inhibition tendencies and fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, and disability, in a sample group (n = 709) reporting chronic musculoskeletal pain. METHODS Regression analyses assessed the predictive value of these variables on pain intensity and on pain duration. Differences in behavioural tendencies between groups reporting high and low pain intensities were examined. RESULTS Neither pain intensity nor pain duration were correlated with behavioural activation (BAS) and inhibition (BIS). Both pain intensity and duration were correlated with fear-avoidance beliefs (intensity p  less then  .001, duration p = .005), kinesiophobia (intensity and duration both p  less then  .001, and disability (intensity and duration both p  less then  .001). There were significant positive relationships between pain intensity and fear-avoidance beliefs (p  less then  .001), kinesiophobia (p = .021), and disability (p  less then  .001), as well as positive relationships between pain duration and fear-avoidance (p = .543), kinesiophobia (p = .084) and disability (p = .002). Fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia and disability accounted for 31% of the variance in pain intensity. CONCLUSIONS Neither BIS nor BAS significantly related to, or predicted pain intensity or duration. No differences in activation and inhibition tendencies were evident between high and low pain intensity groups. This study provides further support for the inter-relationships between fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, disability and pain duration and intensity. No explicit support for behavioural links to pain were shown, however, this may be due to the measurement instrument rather than an invalid theory. The process of expanding a network of conservation areas includes identifying valuable areas for conservation, devising policies and implementing conservation actions on the ground. While the first two components are often analyzed in conservation science, the literature seldom focuses on the implementation process, particularly, how the governance structure acts as driver of conservation outcomes. In this paper, we analyze the process of development of the conservation network in California between 1910 and 2010 to test whether governance structure explains the variation in the attribution of land for conservation over time. We find that governance structure does play an important role in the development of the conservation network over the century. We find evidence that polycentric and diverse governance structures result in better conservation outcomes (i.e. more area of land acquired for conservation). Arrangements that included multiple levels of agencies (e.g. Federal, State, and County) better predict the area of conservation land per decade. Location of conservation action per county had an effect on conservation outcomes over the last decades, and we also find a strong negative effect of per capita income in the implementation of conservation actions. These results suggest that it is possible to leverage governance structure to meet future conservation challenges through the maintenance of a diverse and polycentric governance structure. Some of the microorganisms present in urban wastewater, which include intestinal protozoa and nematodes, can be pathogenic. Their (oo)cyst and egg transmissible stages are very resistant to environmental stresses and disinfectants and they are therefore difficult to remove. Thus, they can constitute a health risk if water or sludge obtained in the purification of wastewater is reused for agricultural purposes. In this context, the presence of intestinal protozoa and nematodes were studied in influents, effluents and sludge from five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the north of Spain by optical microscopy and PCR techniques. The removal efficiency of different wastewater treatments was also compared. The presence of protozoa has increased among the population discharging waste to WWTPs in recent years. Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Entamoeba spp. and nematodes were detected in all of the WWTPs. Indeed, this is the first report of Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba moshkovskii in Spanish WWTPs. The water treatments studied showed different removal efficiencies for each species of intestinal protozoa, with the aerated lagoons providing the best results. (Oo)cysts were also detected in sludge even after aerobic digestion and dehydration. To avoid risks, (oo)cyst viability should be analysed whenever the sludge is to be used as a fertilizer. Further studies are necessary for a better understanding of the presence and behaviour of intestinal parasites. Due to depletion of water resources and increased water demand, greywater reuse is gaining popularity as a means of water conservation all over the world. Availability of reliable data on greywater generation and quality characteristics is important in deciding the treatment system and the reuse option. This paper summarises quantity and quality characteristics of greywater reported from different parts of the world. Greywater generation from different countries is compared and its variability is discussed. Important pollutants of concern in greywater such as organic content, nutrients, microorganisms, metals and organic micropollutants from different greywater sources such as bathrooms, hand basins, kitchen and laundry are described. The review shows large variations in greywater quality and quantity with respect to time and source, and the selection of a treatment system would largely depend on this variability. The review also shows that at the levels found in greywater, heavy metals and organic micropollutants in recycled greywater generally do not pose a threat to human health if treated properly.
