The inoculum biomass was collected from a pilot-scale (3 m3 process tank) nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) (deammonification moving bed biofilm (DeaMBBR)) reactor demonstrating the highest total nitrogen removal rate (TNRR) of 0.33 kg N m-3 day-1. These MFCs were operated for the total duration of 419 days during which regular feed was given and performance was monitored for first 30 cycles and last 30 cycles, with each cycle of 3 day duration. The MFC-ANA continuously generated bio-energy with higher volumetric power density (9.5 W m-3 and 6.0 W m-3) in comparison to MFC-CON (4.9 and 2.9 W m-3) during the first 30 and last 30 cycles of operational period, respectively. 680C91 price MFC-ANA also achieved 84 ± 2% and 80 ± 2% of COD removal efficiency and 89 ± 4% and 73 ± 2% of total nitrogen removal efficiency during first 30 and last 30 cycles of operational period, respectively. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a frequent complication of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. Multiple mechanisms are involved in COVID-19-associated AKI, from direct viral infection and secondary inflammation to complement activation and microthrombosis. However, data are limited in critically-ill patients. In this study, we sought to describe the prevalence, risk factors and prognostic impact of AKI in this setting.

Retrospective monocenter study including adult patients with laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to the ICU of our university Hospital. AKI was defined according to both urinary output and creatinine KDIGO criteria.

Overall, 100 COVID-19 patients were admitted. AKI occurred in 81 patients (81%), including 44, 10 and 27 patients with AKI stage 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The severity of AKI was associated with mortality at day 28 (p = 0.013). Before adjustment, the third fraction of complement (C3), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and ferritin levels were higher in AKI patients. After adjustment for confounders, both severity (modified SOFA score per point) and AKI were associated with outcome. When forced in the final model, C3 (OR per log 0.25; 95% CI 0.01-4.66), IL-6 (OR per log 0.83; 95% CI 0.51-1.34), or ferritin (OR per log 1.63; 95% CI 0.84-3.32) were not associated with AKI and did not change the model.

In conclusion, we did not find any association between complement activation or inflammatory markers and AKI. Proportion of patients with AKI during severe SARS-CoV-2 infection is higher than previously reported and associated with outcome.

Observational, prospective case series of 14 eyes of 7 babies (males 3, females 4) with stage 4A ROP who underwent LASERS for stage 4A between January 2018 and July 2019. Gestation age (GA), birth weight (BW), and post-menstrual age (PMA) at which laser was done were noted in all cases. A number of clock hours of detachment at the time of presentation were noted in all babies. All babies were followed up up to 6 months after laser for any recurrence. Success was defined as complete regression of disease without the need of any other modality of treatment like anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) or pars plana vitrectomy. A total of 92.85% (13/14) showed complete regression of disease. One eye progressed to stage 4B ROP warranting lens-sparing vitrectomy (LSV). LASERS is an effective method of management without any need of anti-VEGF or surgical intervention even in babies with stage 4A ROP.
Pancreatectomy results in significant postoperative pain and typically requires opioid analgesia for adequate pain control. Local anesthetics may decrease postoperative pain and opioid requirements but can be limited by onset of action, duration of effect, and inability to titrate dosing after administration. This can be overcome by surgeon placement of tunneled peri-incisional catheters with continuous wound infusion (CWI).

This retrospective cohort study analyzed patients undergoing open pancreatic tumor resection. All the patients received patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), enabling an objective comparison of opioid requirements, and underwent the same recovery pathway. The patients received CWI (n = 45), PCA alone (n = 11), or epidural analgesia (EA) (n = 9). The primary outcome was total opioid use in terms of intravenous morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) and patient-reported pain scores on a numeric rating scale (NRS) of 0 to 10.

No differences in baseline patient or tumor characteristics were observed.
