Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the independent effects of univariate predictive variables resulting in mortality in our study population. The study population was categorized into four nutritional risk groups a major-risk group (GNRI < 82;
= 128), moderate-risk grtor and a promising simple screening tool to identify the subjects with malnutrition associated with higher risk for mortality in those ICU elderly trauma patients.

Sorghum produces a cyanogenic glycoside (dhurrin) that is believed to act as its chemical defence. Studies have shown that acyanogenic plants are smaller in size compared to the wildtype. This study aimed to investigate whether the small plant size is due to delayed germination or due to the lack of dhurrin derived nitrogen. A novel plant system consisting of totally cyanide deficient class 1 (tcd1) and adult cyanide deficient 1 (acdc1) mutant lines was employed. The data for germination, plant height and developmental stage during seedling development and final plant reproductive fitness was recorded. The possible role of phytohormones in recovering the wildtype phenotype, especially in developmentally acyanogenic acdc1 line, was also investigated. The data on plant growth have shown that the lack of dhurrin is disadvantageous to growth, but only at the early developmental stage. The tcd1 plants also took longer to mature probably due to delayed flowering. None of the tested hormones were able to recover the wildtype phenotype. We conclude that the generation of dhurrin is advantageous for plant growth, especially at critical growth stages like germinating seed by providing a ready source of reduced nitrogen.Balanced nutrition and appropriate dietary interventions are fundamental in the prevention and management of viral infections. Introduction of plasmid-borne copies of the fsaA wild type gene (encoding E. coli fructose 6-phosphate aldolase, FSAA) did not allow a bypass by splitting fructose 6-phosphate (F6P) into dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P). Although FSAA enzyme activity was detected, growth on glucose was not reestablished. A mutant allele encoding for FSAA with an amino acid exchange (Ala129Ser) which showed increased catalytic efficiency for F6P, allowed growth on glucose with a µ of about 0.12 h-1. A GL3 derivative with a chromosomally integrated copy of fsaAA129S (GL4) grew with 0.05 h-1 on glucose. A mutant strain from GL4 where dhaKLM genes were deleted (GL5) excreted DHA. By deletion of the gene glpK (glycerol kinase) and overexpression of gldA (of glycerol dehydrogenase), a strain (GL7) was created which showed glycerol formation (21.8 mM; yield approximately 70% of the theoretically maximal value) as main end product when grown on glucose. A new-to-nature pathway from glucose to glycerol was created.The occurrence of phenanthrenes is limited in nature, with such compounds identified only in some plant families. Phenanthrenes were described to have a wide range of pharmacological activities, and numerous research programs have targeted semisynthetic derivatives of the phenanthrene skeleton. Cytidine nmr The aims of this study were the phytochemical investigation of Juncus tenuis, focusing on the isolation of phenanthrenes, and the preparation of semisynthetic derivatives of the isolated compounds. From the methanolic extract of J. tenuis, three phenanthrenes (juncusol, effusol, and 2,7-dihydroxy-1,8-dimethyl-5-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene) were isolated. Juncusol and effusol were transformed by hypervalent iodine(III) reagent, using a diversity-oriented approach. Four racemic semisynthetic compounds possessing an alkyl-substituted p-quinol ring (1-4) were produced. Isolation and purification of the compounds were carried out by different chromatographic techniques, and their structures were elucidated by means of 1D and 2D NMR, and HRMS spectroscopic methods. The isolated secondary metabolites and their semisynthetic analogues were tested on seven human tumor cell lines (A2780, A2780cis, KCR, MCF-7, HeLa, HTB-26, and T47D) and on one normal cell line (MRC-5), using the MTT assay. The effusol derivative 3, substituted with two methoxy groups, showed promising antiproliferative activity on MCF-7, T47D, and A2780 cell lines with IC50 values of 5.8, 7.0, and 8.6 µM, respectively.
