Experimental rigor, neurophenomenology, and no-report paradigms are needed to further understanding of how meditation affects predictive processing and the self.Attentional biases to threat exist in panic disorder (PD), probably related to altered subliminal processing. We systematically reviewed studies investigating subliminal processing in PD. Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE and Scopus®. We meta-analytically compared PD (n = 167) and healthy controls (HC, n = 165) for processing of masked panic-related and neutral words. see more We also compared subliminal and supraliminal presentations of panic-related words relative to neutral words within PD subjects and HC. We found a significantly enhanced Stroop interference to masked panic-related words in PD vs HC (Hedges' g = 0.60, p = 0.03; Q = 14.83, I2 = 66.3 %, p = 0.01). While both PD subjects and HC tended to be slower to respond to supraliminal threat words than to neutral words, PD subjects only showed a marginally significant slower response to subliminal panic-related words vs neutral words. Findings remain inconclusive regarding comparison to other mental disorders, neural correlates, and the effect of psychotherapy. Even if possibly flawed by methodological weaknesses, our findings support the existence of a sensitivity to subliminal threat cues in PD, which could be targeted to improve treatment.Reaching toward a target viewed through laterally refracting prisms results in adaptation of both visual and (limb) proprioceptive spatial representations. Common ways to measure adaptation after-effect are to ask a person to point straight ahead with their eyes closed ("manual straight ahead", MSA), or to a seen target using their unseen hand ("open-loop pointing", OLP). MSA measures changes in proprioception only, whereas OLP measures the combined visual and proprioceptive shift. The behavioural and neurological mechanisms of prism adaptation have come under scrutiny following reports of reduced hemispatial neglect in patients following this procedure. We present evidence suggesting that shifts in proprioceptive spatial representations induced by prism adaptation are larger following lesions to the intraparietal cortex - a brain region that integrates retinotopic visual signals with signals of eye position in the orbit and that is activated during prism adaptation. Six healthy participants and six patients with unilateral intraparietal cortex lesions underwent prism adaptation. After-effects were measured with OLP and MSA. After-effects of control participants were larger when measured with OLP than with MSA, consistent with previous research and with the additional contribution of visual shift to OLP after-effects. However, patients' OLP shifts were not significantly different to their MSA shifts. We conclude that, for the patients, correction of pointing errors during prism adaptation involved proportionally more changes to arm proprioception than for controls. Since lesions to intraparietal cortex led to enhanced realignment of arm proprioceptive representations, our results indirectly suggest that the intraparietal cortex could be key for visual realignment.Rice is sometimes fermented with microorganisms to develop health-promoting foods, but the contribution of a short-term fermentation (a necessary step for fermented rice cake-preparation) to properties of rice starch is not resolved yet. The effects of microorganism fermentation with different amount of starter cultures on multi-scale structures and digestibility of rice starch were investigated. The amount of starter cultures significantly affected structures and digestibility of fermented starch. The fermentation with a lower amount of starter cultures induced starch degradation (corrosion of starch granules, reduction of lamellar orders and compactness, decrease in crystallinity, double helix, short ranger-ordered structures, and molar mass) and a slightly reassembly, which increased the content of slowly digestible starch (SDS). While, the fermentation produced more starch fractions with Mw between 0.60 × 107 g/mol and 1.50 × 107 g/mol as the amount of starter cultures increased, and these starch molecules tended to reassemble and form more ordered multi-scale structures including double helical and short range-ordered structures, starch lamellar orders and compactness, which elevated SDS content. The SDS content of fermented starchy foods could be improved via controlling starch reassembly and multi-scale ordered structures through modulating the amount of starter cultures during fermentation.Nanostructure provides a closer structural support approximation to native bone architecture for cells and further regulates cell's behavior, resulting in the formation of functional tissues. In this work, three engineering collagen templates with oriented fiber architectures were fabricated via electrospinning (Es), plastic compression and tensile (PCT), and dynamic shear stress (SS) methods. Under the observation of POM, SEM, AFM and TEM, the PCT-template and SS-template are packed with well-oriented nanofibers with the native collagen architecture of 67 nm D-periodicity, and the mechanical properties conferred to the templates are better than that of the Es-template. When mentioning the cell's behavior, MC3T3-E1 adhered to grow along the alignment of collagen fiber orientation when cultured on the PCT-template and SS-template. The SS-template with nano- and micro-ordered architecture guided cells to stretch their plasma along with the orientation of collagen fiber, produce more aligned Type I collagen fibers and promote significantly higher osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 than the PCT-template and Es-template. Overall, it is strongly argued the feasibility of hierarchical collagen fiber architectures for bone tissue regeneration. This paper concerns the facile preparation of alginate beads encapsulating layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with diclofenac sodium as drug delivery systems. To better evaluate the effect of LDH carrier, alginate beads loaded with free diclofenac were also prepared. Composites hydrogel beads were ionotropically crosslinked in CaCl2 solution at 4 °C. Thermal and barrier properties were evaluated and correlated with the presence of the inorganic phase. Swelling behavior was investigated over time. Release kinetics of diclofenac at different pH and temperatures were evaluated. The diclofenac release behavior appeared to be affected by the presence of LDH, the pH of release medium and the temperature allowing for fabricating a sustainable composite characterized by a triggered drug release rate. Finally, empirical relationships correlating the drug diffusion as a function of temperature and pH were extrapolated.
