Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are associated with motor impairments, with some children holding a comorbid diagnosis of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). However, DCD is underdiagnosed in these populations and the volume abnormalities that contribute to explaining these motor impairments are poorly understood. In this study, motor abilities as measured by the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ) were compared between children with ADHD, children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children, aged 8-12 years old. Additionally, the association between the DCDQ scores (general coordination, fine motor/handwriting, control during movement, total) and regional volume abnormalities were explored in 6 regions of interest (pre-central gyrus, post-central gyrus, inferior parietal cortex, superior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus), within each group and across all participants. Children with ASD and children with ADHD showed impaired motor abilities in all the DCDQ-derived scores compared to TD children. Additionally, most children with ASD or ADHD had an indication or suspicion of DCD. Within the ASD group, coordination abilities were associated with the volume of the right medial frontal gyrus, and within the ADHD group, the total DCDQ score was associated with the volume of the right superior frontal gyrus. This study underlines the importance of routinely checking motor abilities in populations with ASD or ADHD in clinical practise and contributes to the understanding of structural abnormalities subtending motor impairments in these disorders. Background Around 30-60% of patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO) present with coma, which is often considered as a hallmark of poor prognosis. Aim To examine factors that will help predict outcomes in patients with BAO comatose on admission. Methods A total of 312 patients with angiography-proven BAO were analyzed. Comas were assessed as Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of ≤8 or impaired level of consciousness ascertained in the medical records. Outcomes were evaluated with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) over a phone call at 3 months. In our study, 53 patients were excluded due to inadequate data on the level of consciousness. Results In total, 103/259 (39.8%) of BAO patients were comatose on admission. Factors associated with acute coma were higher age, coronary artery disease, convulsions, extent of early ischemia by posterior circulation Acute Stroke Prognosis Early CT Score (pc-ASPECTS) less then 8, absence of patent posterior collateral vasculature, and occlusion over multiple segments of BA. Inobrodib A total ly if no recanalization is achieved and sICH occurred. Objectives Hyperglycemia and hypokalemia are common problems in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The aim of this study was to determine whether the plasma glucose to potassium ratio (GPR) predicts mortality due to aSAH. Methods We prospectively recruited aSAH patients and healthy controls between March 2007 and May 2017. Clinical outcomes included mortality and poor outcome (modified Rankin scale score of 3-6) after 3 months. Multivariable analysis was used to determine the association between plasma GPR and 3-month mortality in aSAH patients. Results A total of 553 patients were recruited, and the mortality rate was 11%. The GPR was significantly elevated in aSAH patients compared with controls, in patients with a poor outcome than with a good outcome and in non-survivals than in survivals. Multivariable analysis showed that the plasma GPR was an independent factor associated with 3-month mortality. The area under the curve of the GPR was 0.747 in predicting 3-month mortality. Conclusion The plasma GPR on admission has potential as a predictor of 3-month mortality in patients with aSAH.Objective Patients with visual snow syndrome (VSS) suffer from continuous ("TV snow-like") visual disturbance of unknown pathoetiology. In VSS, changes in cortical excitability in the primary visual cortex and the visual association cortex are discussed, with recent imaging studies tending to point to higher-order visual areas. Migraine, especially migraine with aura, is a common comorbidity. In chronic migraine and episodic migraine with aura but not in episodic migraine without aura, a reduced magnetic suppression of perceptual accuracy (MSPA) reflects a probably reduced inhibition of the primary visual cortex. Here we investigated the inhibition of the primary visual cortex using MSPA in patients with VSS, comparing that with MSPA in controls matched for episodic migraine. Methods Seventeen patients with VSS were compared to 17 age- and migraine-matched controls. Visual accuracy was assessed by letter recognition and modulated by transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered to the occipital cortex at different intervals with respect to the letter presentation (40, 100, and 190 ms). Results Suppression of visual accuracy at the 100-ms interval was present without significant differences between VSS patients and age- and migraine-matched controls (percentage of correctly recognized trigrams, control 46.4 ± 34.3; VSS 52.5 ± 25.4, p = 0.56). Conclusions In contrast to migraine with aura, occipital cortex inhibition, as assessed with MSPA, may not be affected in VSS.Background Indications for subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) surgery are determined basically by preoperative motor function; however, postoperative quality of life (QOL) is not necessarily associated with improvements in motor symptoms, suggesting that neuropsychiatric symptoms might be related to QOL after surgery in patients with Parkinson's disease. Objectives We aimed to examine temporal changes in neuropsychiatric symptoms and their associations with QOL after STN-DBS. Materials and Methods We prospectively enrolled a total of 61 patients with Parkinson's disease (mean age = 65.3 ± 0.9 years, mean disease duration = 11.9 ± 0.4 years). Motor function, cognitive function, and neuropsychiatric symptoms were evaluated before and after DBS surgery. Postoperative evaluation was performed at 3 months, 1 year, and 3 years after surgery. Results Of the 61 participants, 54 completed postoperative clinical evaluation after 3 months, 47 after 1 year, and 23 after 3 years. Frontal lobe functions, depression, and verbal fluency significantly worsened 3 years after STN-DBS.
