What is a Volvo Truck Key?

Keep this key away from children. If swallowed truck key programmer can cause serious injuries.

Volvo Trucks is a leader in the freight transportation industry. It is focused on five key areas including: Efficiency of the fuel supply, Driver Productivity and Connected Services.

Ignition key

The ignition key is the mechanical component that turns on the vehicle. The ignition key also opens the trunk and doors. Certain keys can be used for additional purposes like a panic button, trunk release, liftgate release, or tailgate release.

Changing the key blade can cause problems. A locksmith registered with Volvo can cut the new key for you. They are usually able to cut keys without the use of a car.

Some Volvo keys have special features such as the red or restricted keys. The way that the car was delivered to the factory determines which features are available. Dealers can request an upgrade to disable the restricted key functions. The dealer can accomplish this for you by using VIDA. You can also do it yourself if you own the software and tools.

Key fobs with a red or orange shell. The shells of the special keys can be removed prior to they are used on a different vehicle. The keys can be reprogrammed by the dealer or yourself. There is no "virginizing" needed with Volvo key fobs.

Remote Key

The remote key allows you to open the doors and start your vehicle. It also controls the locks and activate or disable certain functions, like panorama roof or power windows. The key also includes a special restricted feature that disables motion sensing*. You can purchase keys with this feature from a dealer (you require proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. This key is branded in orange or red. The key shell release slider matches the color therefore swapping a brand new key blade with a used shell won't change the functionality.

Follow VIDA's simple instructions to program (add) the new Remote. It doesn't need to be an "virgin" key, either. Sit in the driver's chair with the door shut and then press the lock button on the new remote and then the side marker light will blink, indicating that the key has been programmed.

Keyless Entry Key

One press on the keyless entry button locks the car and arms the alarm, a long press will close all windows and the panoramic roof*. The key is equipped with the button cell battery (warning: button cells are small and could cause injuries in the event of swallowing). The dealer can cut you a brand new keyless entry key, or an authorized locksmith with Volvo could also. They can also program your Volvo keys. You can also swap key shells on the key fob and it will function interchangably.

Key Fob

A key fob is part of the VOLVO key and includes the keyless entry, lock and unlock functions. It also has an alarm button that can activate the alarm in the vehicle. A key fob also contains a button that can close your windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key fob is contained inside a plastic case that matches your car's color and has silver buttons, you can switch the shells between keys and the function will remain the same.

A dealer can design a new blade for your key fob. A Volvo-registered locksmith can also do this, but may require proof of ownership. You can also use blank keys to copy the emergency blade. However, you will need to program the key via VIDA to allow it to function inside your vehicle.
