Mental Health Services on the NHS
The NHS has responded to the rising number of mental health problems by offering services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan reaffirmed its commitment to invest more in mental healthcare services faster than the overall NHS budget. This includes special suicide prevention services.
Get help
One of four of us will suffer from a mental health problem at some time in our lives. The good news is that there are a variety of different ways to get help and most of us recover after a while. However, it is important to know what assistance is available and who is able to provide it.
You can seek assistance from your doctor or your local health center, or a mental health team in your area. These teams comprise of occupational and nurse psychotherapists, as well as speech therapists. They collaborate with people who use their services. You may receive individual or group therapy depending on the type of help you need.
You will be asked to fill out a form by your GP so they can refer you to a mental health service in the community. They will also ask what type of assistance you require. You will then be seen by someone from a mental health team that may include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In certain instances your evaluation and treatment will be conducted by a nurse specialist. You can contact the NHS 111 helpline for assistance if you're in an emergency. If you're already supported by mental health services it's a good idea call your usual team first unless it's out of normal hours, on a weekend or on a bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health included plans to establish more multidisciplinary, community-based, place-based mental health teams that have links to primary care networks. Check This Out will improve the quality of the care delivered to people experiencing a crisis, and offer support to those in their homes and community instead of in hospitals.
The plan also aimed at make crisis services more accessible by reducing wait times and allowing more beds. It would also introduce mental health transport vehicles and make sure that every ambulance has a mental health liaison nurse in their control rooms to ensure that those suffering from a mental health crisis are helped in times of crisis.
Treatment options
The NHS offers a wide array of treatment options for mental health conditions. The less severe disorders are typically treated by GPs, while more serious disorders require a specialist team. These teams are spread across community and primary mental health services, as well as psychiatric hospitals. You can also seek assistance in a safe space when you are in a crisis.
Talking therapies are one of the most popular forms of treatment for depression and anxiety. These programs, formerly known as IAPT (Interactive Assessment and Psychotherapy), have seen their numbers of clients increase every year since they were introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan commits to expanding these services so that 1.9 million people will be able to access them in 2023/2024.
Psychiatric medications are also an important component of treatment. They can improve symptoms by altering how the brain's chemicals function. They can also help reduce the effects of other treatments. Your doctor will suggest the best medication for you.
There are many different types of talking therapies, including group therapy and individual therapy. Some of these can be delivered in person, but others can be done remotely. Some patients prefer receiving treatment in person, but this is a personal decision. Mind is one of many charities that provide support groups and courses. The site is full of information that is reliable but you should be aware of the fact that there are a lot of false or misleading claims on the internet regarding mental health issues.
While the NHS is improving its mental health services, it still struggles to meet the demands. There are 54 mental health trusts across the UK, and most of they receive funding from clinical commissioning groups to provide their service. They are usually located in a specific area, but can be commissioned to deliver national services.
The lack of resources is a major issue. There are concerns about the quality and shortage of nurses and psychiatrists. The NHS is working to improve these services by providing more training and introducing new methods of working. It also introduces more efficient and safer methods to treat people who are in crisis. This includes mobile crisis teams, as well as safe space.
We are here to help you
Since the NHS was established 70 years ago, there are positive changes for those suffering from mental health issues. The treatment options have increased and social barriers have been smashed down. However, there is much to do.
People who are experiencing a mental crisis need to receive the assistance they require quickly and easily. This is why the NHS is working hard to improve the quality of services for those who require them. By 2020/21 we will ensure that all acute hospitals have a mental health liaison service both in A&E and on wards for inpatients, and that 70% of them will be in compliance with the core 24 standard by 2023/24. We will then strive to achieve 100% coverage.
We will also enhance community services, including talking therapy, to provide assistance to hundreds of thousands of people with mental health conditions regardless of whether they are common or severe. We will continue to work on the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) program so that more people are treated by trained therapists more quickly.
The NHS offers free, confidential helplines for anyone who is struggling with mental health issues. Samaritans Mind and Rethink are some of the helplines that are available. These helplines are run by trained volunteers. They offer a safe space to talk or provide guidance and information on how to tackle your mental health concerns.
Additionally to that, there are a lot of local organizations that provide support and guidance to those suffering from mental health issues. They can provide self-help guides, coping strategies and activities to try. A lot of these organizations offer face-to-face support groups for those who prefer this option.
For students, there is the University's Open Door Team which offers a drop-in counselling service for those feeling down or stressed. Nightline is a student counselling service that offers private listening as well as information and support from experienced volunteers. Charities such as Mind and Rethink are a great source of information and can provide support in various forms, including online and through local groups. They offer a variety of activities and courses ranging from mindfulness to art classes that can be beneficial for those suffering from mental health issues.
Making a referral
Mental health services are under pressure and GPs have to make difficult choices regarding the best specialist services to refer their patients to. The GP will consider the medical history of the patient and recommend them to services they believe can help. They may refer a patient to an NHS trust or an independent service.
A mental health specialist will examine the referral to determine if it is appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't happy with the referral, they'll contact the GP to discuss their decision and explain the reasons. They may request the GP to alter the referral or request additional details.
The ability to refer patients to the local Community Mental Health Team can be made via the NHS e-Referral Service. The system allows doctors and other healthcare professionals to direct patients to a preliminary clinical assessment service for mental health or directly to an appointment. However not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system isn't able to be used for every type of mental health referral.
A doctor may also decide to refer a person to a specialist community mental health service (CMT). They are typically run by a major local healthcare organisation or hospital. CMTs are an excellent option for those who require to consult a psychologist or psychiatrist, but do not require inpatient care. They can also provide an early intervention program where a psychiatrist works with a therapy therapist to assist a person overcome a crisis or improve the quality of their life.
One of the major challenges faced by CMTs CMT is to ensure that all suitable referrals are assigned within the appropriate timeframe. One of the issues is that a lot of referrals are deemed urgent, despite the fact that they might not be. This can cause people who aren't in crisis to be overwhelmed and suffer delays.
To combat this problem, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform standards for what constitutes an urgent referral. This is being achieved by using a standardised referral proforma that requires the referrer to determine if the case is urgent. The form includes a box that the referrer can tick to indicate if the request is urgent.
