How Does Medication For ADHD Work?
Many children and adults discover that ADHD medication helps improve their ability to focus and control their impulses, as well as become organized. Your healthcare provider will work with you and your child to determine the most effective medicine for them.
Stimulants are the first line treatment for ADHD. They increase the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine.
Stimulants
The stimulant medications used to treat ADHD help by increasing the levels of certain chemicals (called neurotransmitters) in the brain. This decreases symptoms, and increases performance and attention span. Different medications affect people in different ways and it can take time to find the right one(s) and the most effective dose(s).
Whatever medication you or your child consumes it is important to ensure that they are taken according to the prescriptions of your physician. Too either too much or not enough can cause serious harm. It is also essential to take the medication at the same time every day, to help maintain the dosage consistent in the body. Children being treated for ADHD should be helped to adhere to a schedule and often require assistance in this area from parents, teachers and other caregivers.
Stimulants are among the most popular treatments for ADHD. These medications stimulate brain activity, specifically in areas that control the behavior and attention. These are the first treatment options that doctors try, and they work well for 70% to the 80% of children and adults suffering from ADHD. The stimulants can reduce the hyperactivity, interruptions and fidgeting and can improve behavior and school performance. adhd medication can also help with problems at home as well as in relationships.
Methylphenidate (formerly Ritalin) is the most commonly prescribed stimulant medication for treating ADHD. It is available in tablets that begin working within 30 to 60 minutes, and disappears after 3 to 4 hours. It's also available in long-acting tablets, which are designed to be taken at least once per day in the morning and last from six to eight hours. Many people opt to pair a long-acting tablet with a short-acting one in the late afternoon, to avoid the "crash" that can sometimes occur as the stimulant begins to wear off.
The other type of ADHD medication is amphetamines, which are stronger and can last longer than methylphenidate medication. Adderall and Dexedrine are examples. These can be taken in the form of chewable tablets or liquids and are better suited for older teens or adults who don't have issues with the way the medicine tastes.
Both kinds of stimulants can cause adverse effects, such as loss of appetite, headaches and trouble sleeping. They also can increase blood pressure and heart rate in certain individuals.
Non-stimulants
Non-stimulant ADHD medications, such as guanfacine and atomoxetine alter the way chemical messengers operate in the brain. They are less likely than stimulant medicines to get you "high" and buzzed. They are also less likely to lead to addiction or abuse. They are suitable for those who cannot take stimulants or as part a treatment plan along with lifestyle changes and skill training.
There is some debate about the effectiveness of these drugs since some studies show that they don't improve academic performance for students suffering from ADHD. The majority of young people with ADHD who are taking these medications say that they have improved their ability to concentrate and finish tasks, as well as manage their emotions. They also report improvements in their social lives, relationships and overall happiness.
