Developments in spinning systems have triggered revolutions ranging from bioengineering tissue scaffolds to emerging smart wearable fabrics, but the structures of the spinning fibers are usually limited by intrinsic channel configurations and the "dead" nozzle's geometry. In contrast, natural living systems, such as a spider spinning apparatus, use a "live" gate to coordinate microstructures via shearing and expanding at both axial and radial directions. Herein, for the first time, we introduce a dynamic liquid gating effect in artificial systems to mimic the spinning in biological organisms. Theoretical modeling and experimental regime diagram demonstrate that the topographies and microstructures of the fibers self-evolve after passing through the liquid gate and they could be tuned over a wide range, which successfully exceeds the limits of current "dead" spinning channels. In particular, fibers with a periodic spindle-knot structure self-evolve from a water gate and show fast directional water collecting and intelligent sensing ability. The liquid gating design not only sheds new light on fiber structure control in multiple spatiotemporal dimensions but also contributes to the development of high-performance fibers with sophisticated functions.Antimicrobial peptides that target the integrity of bacterial envelopes can eradicate pathogens with little development of resistance, but they often inflict nonselective toxicity toward mammalian cells. The prevailing approach to optimize the selectivity of cationic peptides has been to modify their composition. Instead, we invent a new generation of broad-spectrum antibacterial nanoconstructs with negligible mammalian cell toxicity through a competitive displacement of counter polyanions from the complementary polycations. The nanoconstruct, which has a highly cationic Au nanoparticles (NPs) core shielded by polymeric counterions, is inert in nonbacterial environments. When exposed to negatively charged bacterial envelopes, this construct sheds its polyanions, triggering a cationic Au NP/bacterial membrane interaction that rapidly kills Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The anionic charge and hydrophilicity of the polyanion provides charge neutralization for the peptide-decorated Au NP core, but it is also bacteria-displaceable. These results provide a foundation for the development of other cationic particles and polymeric counterion combinations with potent antimicrobial activity without toxicity.Purple-pericarp sweetcorn (PPS) is a novel product, requiring both purple pigment development and maintenance of sweetness. Storage period and temperature had a profound impact on total anthocyanin accumulation (TAC) and sugar content. While TAC remained relatively unchanged during 14-day storage at 4 °C, the first recorded observation of continuing accumulation of anthocyanin and phenolic compounds was concurrent with an increase in purple pigment coverage across the surface of the kernel at 23 °C. TAC in PPS significantly increased, doubling after 14 days at 23 °C. Anthocyanin concentration and kernel coverage were also affected by harvest maturity. The results indicated that biosynthesis of anthocyanins is still occurring during postharvest storage of PPS. A significant decline in sugar concentration was also observed during storage with a greater decline at 23 °C. As anthocyanin accumulation and maintaining sweetness are important factors for sweetcorn, identifying storage temperatures that optimize both quality criteria are required.Nowadays, films with antibacterial activity and applied for freshness monitoring by colorimetric response have been drawing growing attention in food packaging. However, the development of versatile antibacterial and colorimetric agents is still highly desirable. Herein, WO3 nanorods are incorporated in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to develop a novel composite film with photothermal antibacterial activity and freshness monitoring faculty. The interaction between WO3 nanorods and PVA is due to hydrogen bonds. Compared with the PVA film, the presence of WO3 nanorods can significantly enhance the mechanical and barrier properties; typically, the target film (WO3/PVA)4 shows an increase in tensile strength by 52.7% and Young's modulus by 400.0% and a decrease in oxygen permeability by 72.4% and water vapor permeability by 66.9%. The films demonstrate a WO3 content-dependent antibacterial activity. Under irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR808), the synergistic effect of physical damage, oxidative stress, and temperature increase markedly improves the antibacterial activity of (WO3/PVA)4, showing an antibacterial efficiency of ∼90% against Escherichia coli or beyond 90% against Staphylococcus aureus. The incorporated WO3 nanorods demonstrate lower cytotoxicity toward the model cells of human colon cancer cell line HT-29. The (WO3/PVA)4 film exhibits colorimetric response to H2S and can also be used for pork freshness monitoring as an indicator.Dietary uptake is important for trophic transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the freshwater pelagic ecosystem. In this study, we hypothesized that both the dietary uptake rate and interval significantly influenced its relative contribution to bioaccumulation. We developed a toxicokinetic model framework for the bioaccumulation of deuterated PAHs (PAHs-d10) in aquatic organisms considering different feeding intervals ranging from none for phytoplankton to approximately continuous for zooplankton to discrete for fish and built a simple artificial freshwater pelagic food chain composed of algae Chlorella vulgaris, zooplankton Daphnia magna, and zebrafish. We conducted bioaccumulation experiments and simulations for Daphnia magna and zebrafish under different algal densities based on our model. selleck chemicals llc The results showed that intermittent feeding led to a large fluctuation in the PAH-d10 concentrations in zebrafish compared to a leveled-off pattern in Daphnia magna because of approximately continuous feeding. Trophic dilution of PAHs-d10 occurred in the food chain when there was waterborne-only uptake, but dietary uptake largely mitigated its extent that depended on dietary uptake rates. The assimilation efficiency, dietary uptake rate, and its relative contribution to bioaccumulation of PAHs-d10 in zebrafish were all higher than those in Daphnia magna, suggesting that dietary uptake played a more important role in bioaccumulation of PAHs at higher trophic-level organisms.
