This study aims to empirically analyze the current situation of marine litter governance in China and unearth methods for future development. Based on a mix of 171 policy documents, this article traces the evolution of marine litter governance policies in China since 1982, using the method of literature analysis and content analysis and ROSTCM6 software. These policies can be divided into three stages the initial establishment stage (1982-1989), the rapid development stage (1990-1999) and the comprehensive development stage (2000-2020). In each period, the characteristics and performances of policies are analyzed. Key findings demonstrate that policy subjects and tools have been gradually diversified, the content and scope of governance have become broader, and the policy focus has shifted from quantity reduction to green, intelligent and high-quality development. The development of future marine litter governance policy should improve the legal system, focus on technology, and establish a comprehensive management mechanism for land and sea coordination. The launch of Roadmap towards Zero Single-use Plastics in 2018 demands baseline data on the management of marine debris in Malaysia. In 2021, Malaysia is placed 28th top plastic polluter in the world with plastic consumption at 56 kg/capita/year, therefore data on mismanaged plastic is imperative. This paper reviews the abundance and distribution of marine debris in selected Malaysian beaches over the last decade (2010-2020) and discusses issue on its management. Plastic debris on beaches in Malaysia, was reported to range from 64 items/m2, to as high as 1930 items/m2, contributing 30-45% of total waste collected. Plastics film was the most dominant, mainly originated from packaging materials. Therefore, appropriate action including improved marine waste management system is crucial to tackle the problem, together with effective governance mechanisms. Various suggestions were proposed based on the statistical-environmental data to reduce the occurrence of marine debris in the country. The constantly growing production of synthetic materials and their presence in the environment gradually transform our Blue Planet into the Plastic One. Microplastics (MPs) enlarge significantly their surface during fragmentation processes. Undoubtedly, nanoplastics (NPs), emerging contaminants, and the Plastisphere, the total available surface of debris, are currently on the edge of science. Although a few research are dedicated to the analysis of MPs and NPs from the physical and chemical point of view, there is a lack of the correlation between the material characterization and the microbiological data. The ecological approach, covering the description of numerical antibiotic or metal resistance bacteria, dealing with toxicological issues or biodegradation, is of great importance. check details This paper creates the bridge between the material science approach and the eighth continent (as sometimes Plastisphere is called). It points out that the Plastisphere significance will grow within the coming years and it should not be regarded as one ecological niche, but a set of different ones. As the properties mainly depend on the surface morphology, its numerical characterization will be the base for the classification purposes to better describe and model this phenomenon. Apart from concerning the currently important issues of NPs and the Plastisphere, this paper presents the emerging area of research namely the numerical approach to their characterization. This proposal of an interdisciplinary approach to the classification of the Plastisphere's types might be interesting for the members of different scientific communities nanotechnology, material science and engineering, chemistry, physics, ecology, microbiology, marine microplastics or picture analysis.Polychaetes were studied to assess the effect of aquaculture activity on the seafloor. Very high biodiversity of species was recorded associated with aquaculture centres with Cirratulidae, Spionidae and Paraonidae families being the most diverse and abundant families. The spatial distribution of polychaete trophic groups was the best descriptor for detecting changes on the benthos. Surface and subsurface deposit-feeding species dominated the sites closest to the rafts cages, highlighting Capitella capitata and Cirratulus cirratus as opportunistic species. While replacement and species succession were observed with increasing presence of carnivores and omnivores in sites further away from the salmon cages and experiencing less impact. Analyses based on the distance of feeding modes and ecological groups from the disturbance source were better indicators of the impact that the traditional community approach or sediment biogeochemistry. Therefore, functional traits studies should always be considered on environmental assessments of benthic systems impacted by aquaculture.
A new class of heart-rate sensing, closed-loop vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) devices for refractory epilepsy may improve seizure control by using pre-ictal autonomic changes as an indicator for stimulation. We compared our experience with closed- versus open-loop stimulator implantation at a single institution.
We conducted a retrospective chart review of consecutive VNS implantations performed from 2004 to 2018. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were performed to compare changes in seizure frequency and clinical outcomes (Engel score) with closed- versus open-loop devices. Covariates included age, duration of seizure history, prior epilepsy surgery, depression, Lennox Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), tonic seizures, multiple seizure types, genetic etiology, and VNS settings. We examined early (9-month) and late (24-month) outcomes.
Seventy subjects received open-loop devices, and thirty-one received closed-loop devices. At a median of 8.5 months, there was a greater reduction of seizure frequency after use of generalizability of our study.
The coexistence of epilepsy in familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) has not been reviewed systematically. We investigated the associations of epilepsy in patients with FHM with CACNA1A, ATP1A2, SCN1A or PRRT2 mutations along with clinical and genetic data.
We performed a search in the PubMed bibliographic database and the Cochrane Library was screened for eligible studies, from April 1997 to December 2020. Additionally, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) was searched for mutations in the CACNA1A, ATP1A2, SCN1A and PRRT2 genes. Brief reports, letters, and original articles about FHM and epilepsy were included in the review if their mutations and clinical course of diseases were identified.
Of the included patients with FHM whose information could be accessed, there were 28 families and 195 individuals, 78 of whom had epilepsy; 30 patients had focal epilepsy and 30 patients had generalized epilepsy. All mutations except ATP1A2, which could not be evaluated due to insufficient data, revealed first epilepsy then HM.
