Lichens survive harsh weather of Antarctica as well as of other hostile environments worldwide. Therefore, this investigation is important to understand the evolution of life on Earth in relation to their stress tolerance strategy. We have used chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively, to monitor the activation/deactivation of photosynthesis and carotenoids in three diverse Antarctic lichens, Dermatocarpon polyphyllizum (DP), Umbilicaria antarctica (UA), and Leptogium puberulum (LP). These lichens, post 4 h or 24 h of hydration, showed differences in their ChlF transients and values of major ChlF parameters, e.g., in the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), and yields of fluorescence and heat dissipation (Φf,d), of effective quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII) and of non-photochemical quenching (Φnpq), which may be due to quantitative and/or qualitative differences in the composition of their photobionts. For understanding the kinetics of hydrar, was comparatively slow, in hours range, and there seemed a degradation of synthesized chlorophylls and carotenoids post dryness. We conclude that in extremophilic lichens, their photosynthetic partners, in particular, possess a complex survival and photoprotective strategy to be successful in the extreme terrestrial environments in Antarctica.Spectroscopic data which are needed for detection of new species in the interstellar medium (ISM) are missing for five- and six-membered ring substituted derivatives. In order to supplement the existing literature information, quantum chemical calculations, including geometrical optimizations, simulated IR, Raman and UV-VIS spectra were carried out for 2-cyanothiophene (2CNT) and 3-cyanothiophene (3CNT). Structures for these molecular species were calculated from M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) computed results in conjunction with corrections for systematic deficiencies of basis sets and empirical adjustments for some geometrical parameters. A complete description of IR and Raman spectra including IR frequency assignment and potential energy distribution (PED) analysis is provided. IR and Raman spectra for deuterated species and UV-VIS spectra for thiophene, 2CNT and 3CNT were analyzed. The present computed molecular data are expected to assist astro-scientists in the search of these species in the ISM.Various types of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-protected fluorescent gold nanoclusters (BSA-AuNCs) have been fabricated and applied in various fields. However, the conventional synthesis methods for BSA-AuNCs usually yield a low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in solution. In this study, we systematically examined the influences of incubation time, temperature, and pH on the formation process of BSA-AuNCs and then developed a novel strategy to synthesize BSA-AuNCs with PLQY (26%), far exceeding that of existing counterparts. Of the three important factors, pH, temperature, and time, pH plays a key role in the formation of BSA-AuNCs with different compositions and fluorescence properties. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) results showed that BSA-Au20NCs with high purity can be produced at a pH value of 10 and the correct combination of incubation temperature and reaction time. Materials and methods This prospective study included sixty-five newly diagnosed NPC patients who underwent DWI and 3D ASL scans on a 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and the tumor blood flow (TBF) of NPC were measured. Tumors were classified as low or high T, N and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stages. Student's t-test was used to evaluate the differences between tumors with low and high clinical stages. Pearson correlation analyses were performed to determine the correlation between MRI parameters and clinical stages. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were then used to evaluate diagnostic capability. Results High T stage (T3/4) NPC showed significantly lower ADCmin (P = 0.000) and higher TBFmax (P = 0.003) and TBFmean (P = 0.008) values than low T stage (T1/2) NPC.
