High blood pressure is a serious medical condition that significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although overweight and high blood pressure are frequent consequences for the health of life at sea, there is a paucity of information on the contribution of body mass index (BMI) to high blood pressure (HBP) in seafarers.
The present study was aimed to examine the relationship between BMI and blood pressure and to analyze further BMI as a risk factor for high blood pressure through a modeling approach.
A retrospective analysis was performed on 603 seafarers' medical examination records. The seafarer's blood pressure and BMI were recorded and interpreted according to the WHO criteria. Pearson product-moment correlation was examined to determine the association between BMI and blood pressure. Multinomial logistic regression models were performed to estimate the strength of association between the BMI and the HBP.
Out of a total of 603 seafarers under study, 44.4% and 55.6% were officers and non-officers, respectively. Mean SBP, DBP, and BMI were significantly higher among non-officers than officers. BMI was positively correlated (
<.01) with both SBP (r=0.336) and DBP (r=0.344). About 39% and 16.6% of the study subjects were prehypertension and hypertensive, respectively. The risk of prehypertension and hypertension was higher in individuals who were overweight and obese.
Mean blood pressure levels increase parallel to the rise of BMI. Thus, emphasis should be given on a weight management program in relation to the prevention and control of high blood pressure.

Tomatoes are rich in micronutrients and other bioactive compounds (including vitamins, carotenoids, and minerals) that are known to be essential or beneficial for human health. This review highlights the current state of the art in the molecular understanding of the nutritional aspects, conventional and molecular breeding efforts, and biofortification studies undertaken to improve the nutritional content and quality of tomato. Transcriptomics and metabolomics studies, which offer a deeper understanding of the molecular regulation of the tomato's nutrients, are discussed. The potential uses of the wastes from the tomato processing industry (i.e., the peels and seed extracts) that are particularly rich in oils and proteins are also discussed. Recent advancements with CRISPR/Cas mediated gene-editing technology provide enormous opportunities to enhance the nutritional content of agricultural produces, including tomatoes. In this regard, genome editing efforts with respect to biofortification in the tomato plant are also discussed. The recent technological advancements and knowledge gaps described herein aim to help explore the unexplored nutritional potential of the tomato.
The growing prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and its association with obesity as a metabolic disease contributes to harmful outcomes and healthcare resource burden worldwide. For this reason, there is an urgent need to develop new therapies. Identification of treatment targets, research design, endpoints definitions and assessments, and supportive regulatory pathways for drug approval all play prominent roles in shaping efforts in drug discovery, investigation, and approval.
In this perspective, the authors enumerate key challenges of NAFLD clinical research and offer a conceptual framework to address these issues which arise during clinical trials.
With the anticipated significant healthcare and costs burden that NAFLD will impose throughout the world, the diagnostics and drug development processes need to be accelerated. Important measures to improve clinical trial research include standardization of case definitions, comprehensive and granular covariate data collection, quality study development incorporating novel trial designs, and quality data reporting. The authors believe that these actions will accelerate understanding, development, and ultimately approval of efficacious treatments.

Knee OA (KOA) is the most prevalent type of OA. Recently, it is considered that KOA is a whole joint disease, including articular cartilage, subchondral bone, synovium, ligaments, joint capsules, and muscles around the joint. Exosomes in knee joint are mainly secreted by articular chondrocytes and synoviocytes. They participate in cell and tissue cross-talk by carrying a complex cargo of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, etc. Under normal conditions, exosomes maintain the microenvironmental homeostasis of the joint cavity. Under pathological conditions, the composition and function of exosomes changes, which in turn, disrupts the balance of anabolism and catabolism of articular chondrocyte and facilitates inflammatory responses, thus accelerating KOA progression. As a regenerative medicine, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are promised to facilitate repair of degenerated cartilage and decelerate OA process. click here The therapeutic function of MSC mainly depends on MSC-derived exosomes, which can restore the homeostasis of the articular microenvironment. In the future, the specific mechanism of exosomes for OA treatment needs further elucidation, and the treatment effect of exosomes for long-term and/or severe OA needs further exploration.
