Other factors including relative humidity, airflow velocity, and particulate matters did not have any statistically significant effect on microbial inactivation. Apart from bioaerosol disinfection, inactivation of microorganisms on surfaces of sports equipment was also conducted using chlorine dioxide, zinc oxide, weak acid hypochlorous water, and commercial disinfectant. The surfaces of bicycle handle, dumbbell, and sit-up bench were found to be contaminated with bacteria. Overall bacterial load was 390 to 3720 CFU/cm2 with Escherichia coli specifically 550 to 1080 CFU/cm2. Chlorine dioxide and zinc oxide were noticeably better than weak acid hypochlorous water and commercial disinfectant in terms of bacteria inactivation whereas all tested disinfectants had comparable effectiveness on E. coli disinfection. Targeted microorganisms on the sports equipment surface were sufficiently inactivated within 2 min after the application of disinfectant.Soil contamination with crude oil is a major environmental problem. The aim of this study was to assess whether the earthworm Allolobophora caliginosa could improve the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons while enriching soils that were contaminated with crude oil. In addition, the toxic effects of crude oil on earthworms during bioremediation will be assessed. The soil samples were experimentally contaminated with two different quantities of light crude oil 5 or 7.5 ml for 60 days. Activities of A. caliginosa resulted in 33.56% and 54.98% total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) losses from the soil contaminated with 5 ml of crude oil after 22 and 60 days; respectively. While in 7.5 ml crude oil-contaminated soil, there was a loss of 32.24% and 71.05% of TPH over the same period of time. During the experiment, however, there were no signs of improvement in soil physicochemical properties. Earthworm tissue analyses at the end of the experiment showed significant bioaccumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons in their tissues and changes in their metabolic and hematological parameters. Earthworms exposed to crude oil showed a significant increase in protein, malondialdehyde, and glutathione but decreased in catalase levels and total antioxidant capacity compared to control earthworm after 60 days of exposure. There was a significant decrease in the Hgb, RBCS, Hct, MCV, MCH, platelet count, and WBCs. As a result, the earthworm Allolobophora caliginosa has been shown to be good bioremediator for oil-contaminated soils and also has potential as a bioindicator for contamination. The world has been challenged by achieving the plausible goal of sustainable development. This study aims to evaluate the ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity and their driving factors of Shandong province in China from 1994 to 2017. Back propagation neural network method is adopted to predict the ecological footprint from 2018 to 2030. The findings are as follows (1) The growth of ecological footprint has caused the ecological deficit in Shandong. (2) With regards to population, the increase of total population and the urbanization rate will incur the expansion of ecological footprint. (3) In terms of affluence, the elasticity coefficients of GDP per capita, the production value of industrial sectors, and the proportion of output value of the secondary industry in GDP are 0.068, 0.064, and 0.130 respectively. (4) In terms of technology, the elasticity coefficients of internal expenditure on R&D in GDP and patent number are 0.096 and 0.047 respectively, indicating that technological progress can promote ecological footprint in a short term. (6) The results of the prediction show that the ecological footprint of Shandong from 2018 to 2030 in the policy-regulation scenario is far less than that of the business-as-usual scenario. The policy recommendations are suggested to tackle the sustainable development challenges. The red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) is an endangered bird species that has been listed as one of the Class I National Key Protected Wild Animals of China. This study analyzed the habitat changes in the two most important stopover sites for red-crowned crane (Liao River Estuary and Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserves) from 2000 to 2015. The results showed that the landscape patterns of the important stopover sites of red-crowned crane changed obviously and the potential suitable habitat area (tidal flats and marshland) for the red-crowned crane decreased by 183.3 km2, while the area of human activities (including aquaculture waterbodies, farmland and artificial facilities) increased by 140.3 km2. Landscape fragmentation intensified, which could has negative impacts on the survival of the red-crowned crane during migration. selleck A comparative study confirmed that the reduction in marshlands and increasing landscape fragmentation caused by human activities were the main threats in the Liao River Estuary National Nature Reserve, while human activities and natural factors (such as channel flow, rainfall, and sediment discharge) were the jointly driving factors for the reduction in suitable habitats for red-crowned cranes in the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve. We suggest there are some loopholes in the management of the two nature reserves, which need to be strengthened urgently in China. The present study has been conducted to evaluate the potential threat of NiO nanoparticles (NiO NPs) on an edible fish Heteropneustes fossilis. Fishes selected for the study were exposed to four concentrations of NiO NPs (12, 24, 36 and 48 mg/l) for the period of 14 days, and various haematological, biochemical and enzymological changes in the exposed fishes were examined. Results revealed that maximum fluctuations were seen in 48-mg/l-exposed fishes when compared with the control in terms of the haematological parameters (RBC count, WBC count, Hb content, Ht% and O2 carrying capacity of blood), enzymatic activities (AST, ALP, ALT and LDH) and biochemical parameters (level of cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, bilirubin and creatinine). However, 12 mg/l treatment to the fishes showed its least impact on aforesaid parameters. Furthermore, Ni accumulation and changes in cortisol level in the blood were also noticed in all the treated fishes. Structural changes, such as membrane and nuclear disintegration, micronucleus, deformed and vacuolated cells, and enucleation were also observed in RBCs of NiO NP-treated fishes.
