3 Ways The Most Effective ADHD Medication For Adults Influences Your Life
The Most Effective ADHD Medication For Adults

Most of the medications used to treat ADHD are divided into two categories: nonstimulants and stimulants. stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamines stimulate brain areas that regulate attention and behavior.

Nonstimulants, such as atomoxetine (Strattera) and guanfacine (Intuniv) and Clonidine (Kapvay), work slower than stimulants, but they help increase focus, concentration and impulsivity. They also help reduce anxiety which is often associated with ADHD in adults.

Stimulants

The first treatment that doctors choose to treat ADHD is stimulant medication. However, managing adhd without medication do not work for everyone, and they can have bad adverse effects on some people. Nonstimulant medications take longer to begin to work but they can help increase impulsiveness and inattention for certain adults. ADHD is best treated with the combination of behavioral therapy and medication.

The use of medication is 70%-80% effective for treating ADHD in adults. Treatment is only one component of treatment, though: many people discover that lifestyle changes and training also aid. Tell your doctor if you have any adverse reactions or issues with the medication. This allows them to adjust your dosage as needed.

There are two types of stimulant medications: methylphenidates and amphetamines. Methylphenidates is the most popular treatment for ADD/ADHD. These medicines are available in a variety of strengths forms, dosages, and forms comprising chewable liquid, tablet and capsule. Most adults and children are safe to take them, but those suffering from glaucoma or advanced arteriosclerosis or heart disease symptoms, or who have recently taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), should not.

Amphetamines have a lot in common with methylphenidates, but they're more potent. They're generally less likely to cause severe adverse reactions, and they're more effective than methylphenidates at decreasing symptoms of ADHD. They're also more likely to cause addiction and abuse, hence they're classified as Schedule I drugs.

Both types of stimulants may cause undesirable adverse effects, such as headaches, stomach upsets, anxiety and jitters. But most of these are mild and don't last longer than a couple of weeks.

Nonstimulant medication

Nonstimulant ADHD medications are more difficult to use than stimulants. They might not be as effective however they can improve irritability and inattention. They work by increasing levels of brain chemicals that help control emotions and help focus attention. There are a variety of these drugs and some doctors even prescribe them in conjunction with stimulants to achieve the most effective results.

Strattera (atomoxetine) is an SNRI that raises levels of the brain chemical norepinephrine to reduce impulsiveness and inattention. It took a while to become FDA-approved for treating ADHD however, it's been shown to be helpful for adults. Guanfacine (Intuniv) is a blood pressure medicine that also increases levels of norepinephrine while reducing impulsiveness. It takes a bit longer to work than methylphenidate and amphetamines. It also has a more "no-fly effect" on the brain. Wellbutrin/Zyban (bupropion) and Effexor, (venlafaxine) are other medications that can increase the levels of norepinephrine. These aren't endorsed by the FDA to treat ADHD however they could aid people suffering from this disorder. Antidepressants can also be used to treat ADHD because they increase the levels of brain chemicals that influence the way we behave and mood.
