that mechanisms of resilience may underlie the prolongation of cognitive health until exceptional ages.
Despite more widely accessible combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), HIV-1 infection remains a global public health challenge. Even in treated patients with chronic HIV infection, neurocognitive impairment often persists, affecting quality of life. Identifying the neuroanatomical pathways associated with infection in vivo may delineate the neuropathologic processes underlying these deficits. However, published neuroimaging findings from relatively small, heterogeneous cohorts are inconsistent, limiting the generalizability of the conclusions drawn to date.

To examine structural brain associations with the most commonly collected clinical assessments of HIV burden (CD4+ T-cell count and viral load), which are generalizable across demographically and clinically diverse HIV-infected individuals worldwide.

This cross-sectional study established the HIV Working Group within the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics Through Meta Analysis (ENIGMA) consortium to pool and harmonize data from existing HIV neuroimically implicated regions of the basal ganglia and may represent a generalizable brain signature of HIV infection in the cART era.Temporally unpredictable stimuli influence behavior across species, as previously demonstrated for sequences of simple threats and rewards with fixed or variable onset. Neuroimaging studies have identified a specific frontolimbic circuit that may become engaged during the anticipation of temporally unpredictable threat (U-threat). However, the neural mechanisms underlying processing of temporally unpredictable reward (U-reward) are incompletely understood. It is also unclear whether these processes are mediated by overlapping or distinct neural systems. These knowledge gaps are noteworthy given that disruptions within these neural systems may lead to maladaptive response to uncertainty. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging data from a sample of 159 young adults, we showed that anticipation of both U-threat and U-reward elicited activation in the right anterior insula, right ventral anterior nucleus of the thalamus and right inferior frontal gyrus. U-threat also activated the right posterior insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, relative to U-reward. In contrast, U-reward elicited activation in the right fusiform and left middle occipital gyrus, relative to U-threat. Although there is some overlap in the neural circuitry underlying anticipation of U-threat and U-reward, these processes appear to be largely mediated by distinct circuits. read more Future studies are needed to corroborate and extend these preliminary findings.Iron (Fe) is one of the essential micronutrients required by both plants and animals. In humans, Fe deficiency causes anemia, the most prevalent nutritional disorder. Most people rely on plant-based foods as their major Fe source, but plants are a poor source of dietary Fe. Therefore, there is a critical need to better understand the mechanisms involved in the uptake and trafficking of Fe and how plants adapt to Fe deficiency. Fe participates in key cellular functions such as photosynthesis and respiration. Perturbations of Fe uptake, transport, or storage affect plant growth as well as crop yield and plant product quality. Excess Fe has toxic effects due to its high redox activity. Plants, therefore, tightly regulate Fe uptake, distribution, and allocation. Here, we review the regulatory mechanisms involved at the transcriptional and post-translational levels that are critical to prevent Fe uptake except when plants experience Fe deficiency. We discuss the key regulatory network of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors, including FIT, subgroup Ib, subgroup IVc, and URI (bHLH121), crucial for regulating Fe uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. Furthermore, we describe the regulators of these transcription factors that either activate or inhibit their function, ensuring optimal Fe uptake that is essential for plant growth.
Mandated concussion education has aimed to improve student-athlete knowledge; however, some collegiate student-athletes continue to not disclose concussion. Concussion knowledge may not be the only factor influencing reporting, as student-athlete sex, sport, and pressure from external stakeholders (eg, coaches, teammates, fans, parents or family) have all been documented as influencing collegiate concussion-reporting behavior.

To examine predictors of concussion nondisclosure in collegiate student-athletes.

Cross-sectional study.

Four National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and two Division II universities.

A total of 1125 collegiate student-athletes completed the survey, and 741 provided viable responses and were included for data analysis.

We used a 10- to 15-minute electronic or paper-and-pencil survey that asked about personal and sport demographics, diagnosed concussions and nondisclosed concussion history, concussion knowledge, and level of agreement regarding pressure to play afe dangers of continuing to play, long-term consequences, and transparency about concussion protocols. Comprehensive concussion-education programs should involve coaches and athletes to improve the reporting culture.
Our results suggest that concussion-education programs should go beyond the identification of signs and symptoms to include the dangers of continuing to play, long-term consequences, and transparency about concussion protocols. Comprehensive concussion-education programs should involve coaches and athletes to improve the reporting culture.Plastid sequences have long dominated phylogeny reconstruction at all time depths, predicated on a usually untested assumption that they accurately represent the evolutionary histories of phenotypically circumscribed species. We combined detailed in situ morphometrics (124 plants) and whole-plastome sequencing through genome skimming (71 plants) in order to better understand species-level diversity and speciation in arguably the most challenging monophyletic group within the taxonomically controversial, pseudo-copulatory bee orchid genus Ophrys. Using trees and ordinations, we interpreted the data at four nested demographic levels-macrospecies, mesospecies, microspecies, and local population-seeking the optimal level for bona fide species. Neither morphological nor molecular discontinuities are evident at any level below macrospecies, the observed overlap among taxa suggesting that both mesospecies and microspecies reflect arbitrary division of a continuum of variation. Plastomes represent geographic location more strongly than taxonomic assignment and correlate poorly with morphology, suggesting widespread plastid capture and possibly post-glacial expansion from multiple southern refugia.
