How Sleep Medication Can Help People With ADHD
Many people with ADHD experience racing thoughts and energy spurts that make it hard to sleep. When they do fall asleep it's usually tense and not reviving.
What many people don't know is that the stimulant medication they use to treat their ADHD symptoms during the day may also aid them in sleeping better at night.
Medicines
Sleeplessness and insomnia are common among adults with ADHD. For some, stimulant medication used to treat ADHD can lead to issues with sleep. Medical professionals suggest that patients discuss their concerns with their physician prior to trying any new sleeping medications. The majority of people will discover that the best method to manage their sleep is to use the right medication and follow good sleep hygiene.
Most scientific literature on the effects of ADHD medications on sleep does not mention insomnia as a possible side effect, but it is common for people suffering from ADHD to have trouble falling asleep and waking throughout the night. RLS, or restless leg syndrome (RLS) can cause difficulty falling asleep in some people with ADHD. RLS can make it difficult for certain people to fall asleep and may cause a decrease in the quality of sleep (Lecendreux and Cortese 2007).
MPH has been proven to reduce the frequency of insomnia episodes in children with ADHD by reducing the amount of time spent awake at night, increasing slow wave sleep and increasing the rate of rapid eye movement sleep. It has also been proven to decrease sleep disturbances caused by co-morbid disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea or oppositional disorder in children who suffer from ADHD.
Clonidine is a central depressant that is usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure. It can aid people with ADHD sleep by causing sedation that lasts for four hours. Some practitioners recommend antidepressants such as trazodone, (Desyrel) or mirtazapine, (Remeron) both of which have moderate sedative effects.
Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral therapy can help improve sleep in those with ADHD. This type of therapy focuses on teaching teens and children new skills that will help improve their sleeping habits. Behavioral therapy for ADHD is usually combined with parent training and classroom intervention. This kind of therapy helps children and adolescents to employ positive behavior reinforcement instead of punishment. It isn't easy to fall asleep. a restful night's sleep due to racing thoughts and difficulties falling asleep. In addition, poor sleep can affect working memory and make it harder to focus during the day.
Studies have proven that stimulants can improve the quality of sleep for some adults and children with ADHD, but they also carry the danger of misuse and rebound symptoms. Many doctors favor nonstimulants such as long-acting medications such as methylphenidate (Ritalin), and dextroamphetamine, (Adderall). Both methylphenidate (Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine (Adderall) are able to increase the levels of dopamine in your brain. However, they do so through different ways. Nonstimulants can take longer to work, but they generally have fewer side effects.
Some experts also suggest supplementing with melatonin or light therapy to treat sleep problems in patients with ADHD. Other options include cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy which can help a child or an adult learn how to alter certain patterns of thought and behavior. The change in these patterns could help to improve control of attention, self-control and working memory.
