The incidence of infections with ESBL-producing
(ESBL-Ec) in New Zealand is increasing. ESBL-Ec most commonly cause urinary tract infections and are seen in both community and hospitalized patients. The reason for the increasing incidence of ESBL-Ec infections is unknown.
In this study, 65 urinary ESBL-Ec isolates from the Otago region in 2015 were fully genetically characterized to understand the mechanisms of transmission. The ESBL gene,
STs, plasmid types and genetic context (e.g. insertion sequences) of ESBL genes were determined by a combination of whole genome and plasmid sequencing. The phylogenetic relationships of the isolates were compared with ESBL-Ec isolates sequenced as part of the 2016 nationwide survey.
Significant diversity of
strains, plasmids, and the genetic context of ESBL genes was seen. However, there was evidence of common mobile genetic elements in unrelated ESBL-Ec.
Multiple introductions of ESBL resistance genes or resistant bacterial strains with limited horizontal transmission of mobile genetic elements accounts for the increased incidence of ESBL-Ec in this low prevalence area. Future studies should investigate modes of transmission of ESBL-Ec in the Otago region.

VGF and VGF-derived peptides have been repeatedly identified in well-powered and well-designed multi-omic studies as dysregulated in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. New therapeutics is urgently needed for these devastating and costly diseases, as are new biomarkers to improve disease diagnosis and mechanistic understanding. From a list of 537 genes involved in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis, VGF was highlighted by the Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Alzheimer's disease as the potential therapeutic target of greatest interest. VGF levels are consistently decreased in brain tissue and CSF samples from patients with Alzheimer's disease compared to controls, and its levels correlate with disease severity and Alzheimer's disease pathology. In the brain, VGF exists as multiple functional VGF-derived peptides. Full-length human VGF1-615 undergoes proteolytic processing by prohormone convertases and other proed peptides have also been associated with frontotemporal lobar dementias, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lewy body diseases, Huntington's disease, pain, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and antidepressant response. This review summarizes current knowledge and highlights questions for future investigation regarding the roles of VGF and its dysregulation in neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease. Finally, the potential of VGF and VGF-derived peptides as biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases is highlighted.Thorough assessment of cerebral dysfunction after acute lesions is paramount to optimize predicting clinical outcomes. We here built random forest classifier-based prediction models of acute motor impairment and recovery post-stroke. Predictions relied on structural and resting-state fMRI data from 54 stroke patients scanned within the first days of symptom onset. Functional connectivity was estimated via static and dynamic approaches. Motor performance was phenotyped in the acute phase and 6 months later. A model based on the time spent in specific dynamic connectivity configurations achieved the best discrimination between patients with and without motor impairments (out-of-sample area under the curve, 95% confidence interval 0.67 ± 0.01). In contrast, patients with moderate-to-severe impairments could be differentiated from patients with mild deficits using a model based on the variability of dynamic connectivity (0.83 ± 0.01). Here, the variability of the connectivity between ipsilesional sensorimotor cortex and putamen discriminated the most between patients. Finally, motor recovery was best predicted by the time spent in specific connectivity configurations (0.89 ± 0.01) in combination with the initial impairment. Here, better recovery was linked to a shorter time spent in a functionally integrated configuration. Dynamic connectivity-derived parameters constitute potent predictors of acute impairment and recovery, which, in the future, might inform personalized therapy regimens to promote stroke recovery.Creating dance in physical education teacher education (PETE) is described as a way of expressing subjective experiences based on movements that the students have already mastered or as a way of composing dance with set movements from various dance forms that are further explored through concepts such as time, space, power and flow. This article shows how 13 Norwegian student teachers experienced the creation of dance as part of their PETE. It explores the following questions how do student teachers in PETE experience dance creation as an embodied process of exploring, transforming and creating movements, and how were these experiences facilitated by bodily learning that was initiated by body memories? The results show that creating dance is a intersubjective, intercorporeal and interaffective phenomenon where the sense-making process happens as both an individual and a joint process. This ongoing individual and participatory sense-making can further be understood as a reciprocal dependency between culture and self, where the students' bodily learning process evolves on an existential level over time. Through this process, the students develop a sense of confidence and trust in each other, which creates a feeling of belonging. The educational potential of bodily learning through creating dance can be seen in relation to the affordances the students perceive and utilize within their learning culture in PETE.Background The Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) and the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) are widely used self-report tools assessing the type, number, and severity of concussion symptoms. see more There are overlapping symptoms and domains, though they are scored differently. The SCAT consists of 22 questions with a 7-point Likert scale for a total possible score 132. The RPQ has 16 questions and a 5-point Likert scale for a total of 64 possible points. Being able to convert between the two scores would facilitate comparison of results in the concussion literature. Objectives To develop equations to convert scores on the SCAT to the RPQ and vice versa. Methods Adults (17-85 years) diagnosed with a concussion at a referring emergency department were seen in the Hull-Ellis Concussion and Research Clinic, a rapid access concussion clinic at Toronto Rehab-University Health Network (UHN) Toronto Canada, within 7 days of injury. The RPQ and SCAT symptom checklists as well as demographic questiototal score. The equations will enable researchers and clinicians to quickly convert between the scales and to directly compare concussion research findings.Social media platforms are an accessible and increasingly used way for the public to gather healthcare-related information, including on sports injuries. "TikTok" is currently one of the fastest-growing social media platforms worldwide, and it is especially popular amongst adolescents and young adults. The widespread use and popularity of TikTok suggests that this platform has potential to be a source for healthcare information for younger individuals. The aim of this study was to gain a preliminary understanding of the concussion/head injury-related information on TikTok, and to gauge if TikTok could serve as a platform for concussion education. This exploratory study used a systematic search strategy to understand more about how concussion is being portrayed through TikTok videos. Using the keywords "concussion" and "head injury," 200 videos were downloaded from TikTok and 43 videos were excluded. Of the 92 videos retrieved using the keyword "concussion," 95% (n = 88) had more than 100,000 views and 6% (n = 10) had been viewed more than 10 million times. Over half, 54% (n = 50) of the "concussion" videos depicted individuals "playing around" and getting hit in the head, whilst only 1% (n = 1) of the TikTok videos were categorized as "explaining concussion facts." The large numbers of views of concussion-related TikTok videos demonstrates the popularity of this platform and indicates that healthcare organizations should consider TikTok as a potential means for concussion education amongst younger individuals.Introduction Major depression is a psychiatric disease associated with physical inactivity, which in turn affects mental and physical health. A randomized controlled trial is being implemented to facilitate physical activity in people with major depression. In March 2020, Swiss state authorities temporarily legislated a lockdown to contain the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), which influenced health, behavior and research. The aim of this study was to find out whether data gathered before and during/after the lockdown among in-patients with major depression differ with regard to psychosocial health, physical activity and related attitudes and to establish whether baseline data have been affected by the lockdown. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis within a randomized controlled trial. Physically inactive, adult in-patients diagnosed with major depression were recruited from four Swiss psychiatric clinics between January 2019 and December 2020. Psychosocial health was measured with questionnaires perts. Conclusion Baseline data gathered in in-patients suffering from major depression who are physically inactive upon admission to in-patient treatment in Switzerland seem to be unaffected by the COVID-19-induced lockdown. To assess changes in said population regarding psychosocial health and physical activity patterns over time, longitudinal data are needed.Is sport sustainable? Could sport be sustainable? Is there hope? The short answer is it depends. This article discusses the six most essential issues on which answers to the questions above depend. First, it depends on what we already know about sport and sustainability. Second, it depends on how we observe or define sport and sustainability, respectively. Third, it depends on the ontology and epistemology on which the definitions and theories are based. Fourth, it depends on how we describe and explain the relationships and dependencies between sport, society and the environment. Fifth, it depends on how historical and sociological theories describe and explain how societies and civilizations operate, develop and eventually collapse. Sixth, it depends on whether we believe is it possible to plan and steer the future. These conditions indicate that the questions are challenging to answer but not impossible. Based on sociological systems theory, the author concludes that sport will not be sustainable unless modernity changes into a different kind of society-a world society that operates and governs from the binary code of sustainable/unsustainable instead of today's statal code of power/powerless.
