Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a common breathing disorder during sleep with potential lethality and multi-complications. Polysomnography (PSG) is now the golden standard for the diagnosis obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. However, PSG is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, it is important to find inexpensive and convenient biomarkers for the diagnosis of OSAHS.

The present study aimed to explore the potential diagnostic value of HIF-1α for OSAHS and its clinical significance.

This study consisted of 368 patients admitted to the sleep laboratory. The patients were classified according to their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores as OSA negative (AHI<5), mild-moderate (AHI5-30), and severe OSA (AHI>30), and severe OSA treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). qRT-PCR was used to detect mRNA levels in the plasma; Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to analyze the correlation of HIF-1α mRNA level and the clinicopathological factors of OSAHS; ROC curve was constructed to evaluate the diagnostic value of HIF-1α mRNA.

HIF-1α mRNA was significantly up-regulated in the plasma of OSAHS patients, especially patients with severe OSAHS. HIF-1α mRNA was positively correlated with the AHI and ODI but negatively correlated with the mean oxygen saturation in patients with OSAHS. Results of ROC curve showed that HIF-1α is a sensitive biomarker for the diagnosis of OSAHS, especially severe OSAHS.

HIF-1α mRNA might be used as s a convenient and inexpensive method for triaging OSAHS patients PSG assessment in the hospital and evaluate the curative effect.

Energy-based treatments have been found to be a promising treatment modality for improving stress urinary incontinence (SUI) symptoms. This prospective two-center study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of fractional-pixel CO
laser for the treatment of SUI.

Eighty-five women with SUI symptoms as per the cough stress test and validated International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF), were treated intravaginally with Pixel-CO
laser. Two treatment sessions were performed with a 1-month interval. Safety and treatment tolerance were assessed by the visual analog scale (VAS) immediately and at 1 week after each laser treatment. Associations of age and body mass index (BMI) with the ICIQ-UI-SF score were statistically assessed by the Jonckheere-Terpstra test.

The ICIQ-UI-SF score was 12.0 at baseline, 7.0, after the first treatment, and 3.5 after the second treatment (P = 0.001). For women with BMI (25.0-29.9), the ICIQ-UI-SF score was 9.0 at the bant or significant pain was reported during or after the procedure. Its safety and efficacy are clearly demonstrated. Lasers Surg. Stem cell niche regulated the renewal and differentiation of germline stem cells (GSCs) in Drosophila. Previously, we and others identified a series of genes encoding ribosomal proteins that may contribute to the self-renewal and differentiation of GSCs. However, the mechanisms that maintain and differentiate GSCs in their niches were not well understood.

Flies were used to generate tissue-specific gene knockdown. Small interfering RNAs were used to knockdown genes in S2 cells. learn more qRT-PCR was used to examine the relative mRNA expression level. TUNEL staining or flow cytometry assays were used to detect cell survival. Immunofluorescence was used to determine protein localization and expression pattern.

Herein, using a genetic manipulation approach, we investigated the role of ribosomal protein S13 (RpS13) in testes and S2 cells. We reported that RpS13 was required for the self-renewal and differentiation of GSCs. We also demonstrated that RpS13 regulated cell proliferation and apoptosis. Mechanistically, we showed that RpS13 regulated the expression of ribosome subunits and could moderate the expression of the Rho1, DE-cad and Arm proteins. Notably, Rho1 imitated the phenotype of RpS13 in both Drosophila testes and S2 cells, and recruited cell adhesions, which was mediated by the DE-cad and Arm proteins.

These findings uncover a novel mechanism of RpS13 that mediates Rho1 signals in the stem cell niche of the Drosophila testis.

The XANTUS study (NCT01606995) demonstrated low rates of stroke and major bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) receiving rivaroxaban in clinical practice for the prevention of thromboembolic events (N = 6784).

Because previous real-world studies have not reported gender-dependent responses to rivaroxaban treatment, this sub-analysis of the XANTUS study investigated the effect of gender on outcomes.

The centrally adjudicated outcomes were compared between genders. Primary outcomes were major bleeding and all-cause death. Secondary outcomes included symptomatic thromboembolic events. Multivariable Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of risk factors on outcomes between genders.

A total of 2765 female and 4016 male patients were included in the analysis. Baseline characteristics were generally similar. No nominally significant interaction between gender and risk factors for the study outcomes was observed. Rates of major bleeding, all-cause death and symptomatic thromboembolic events in patients with non-valvular AF receiving rivaroxaban for stroke prevention were similar in men and women; no significant differences in risk factors for these outcomes were observed between genders.

Further research is needed to better characterize the relative importance of different risk factors on outcomes in men vs women and to determine whether gender differences exist in patients treated with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants.
