Pallidotomy is the oldest stereotactically performed neurosurgical procedure for movement disorders. Consequently, there is a wealth of literature available on the topic.
The aim of this analysis was to identify the top-cited articles on pallidotomy in order to discern the origins, spread, the current trends, and the future directions of this surgical procedure.
We performed a search of the Web of Science database on 19 October 2020 using the keyword "pallidotomy." The top-100 cited articles found were arranged in descending order on the basis of citation count (CC) and citation per year (CY). Relevant conclusions were derived.
The 100 top-cited articles were published between 1961 and 2017, in 24 journals. The average CC and CY were 118.1 (range - 856-46) and 5.326 (range - 29.52-2.09), respectively. The 3 most prolific authors were Lang AE (Neurologist - Toronto), Lozano AM (Neurosurgeon - Toronto), and Vitek JL (Neurologist - Atlanta). The Journal of Neurosurgery published the highest number of top-cited articles [Neurology. 1960;1061-9]. The maximum articles were from the USA. University of Toronto and Emory University were the most productive institutions.

Hemostasis depends on the delicate balance between coagulants and anticoagulants. Higher levels of circulating coagulants have been associated with higher risk of cerebral infarctions and dementia. In contrast, higher levels of circulating protein C, an endogenous anticoagulant, have been associated with lower risk of cerebral infarctions, and the association between protein C levels and the risk of dementia is unknown. The goal of this study was to evaluate the association of circulating protein C levels in midlife and late life with incident dementia.
Circulating protein C levels were measured using blood samples collected at the midlife baseline (1987-1989) and the late-life baseline (2011-2013) among 14,462 and 3,614 participants, respectively, in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. Protein C levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at midlife and a modified aptamer-based assay at late life. Participants were followed up to 2013 from midlife and up to 2017 from late lifed 0.04; late-life hazard ratio 0.84, 95% confidence interval 0.55-1.28, p value for trend 0.04).

The cell block (CB) is an important adjunct to cytological preparations in diagnostic cytopathology. Optimizing cellular material in the CB is essential to the success of ancillary studies such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular studies (MS). Our aim was to identify which CB method was most suitable in a variety of specimen types and levels of cellularity.
We assessed 4 different CB methods, thrombin clot method (TCM), MD Anderson method (MDAM), gelatin foam method (GFM), and agar method (AM), with descriptive observations and ranking of the methods based on quantity of cells and morphological features.
TCM performed best in ranking for both quantity of cells and morphological features, followed by MDAM, GFM, and AM. Lack of adjuvant in the MDAM resulted in some unique morphological advantages which, however, also resulted in inconsistent performance. In low cellularity cases insufficient cells were frequently identified on slides from MDAM and AM CBs. Technique touch time was similar for all methods, with total processing time being shortest for TCM followed by MDAM, GFM, and AM.
TCM was the most robust CB technique, retaining high scores for ranking of quantity and morphology in a variety of specimen cellularities and specimen types.

Fetal pleural effusion may require in utero shunting which is associated with procedure-related complications.
To evaluate the efficacy and complications of the newly designed Somatex shunt in treating fetal pleural effusion.
Consecutive cases with primary fetal pleural effusion who were treated with the Somatex shunt between 2018 and 2019 were evaluated. Perinatal outcomes and complications were retrospectively analyzed.
There were 6 cases of unilateral and 1 case of bilateral pleural effusion, and hence a total of 8 pleuroamniotic shunting procedures were performed. The median gestational age at diagnosis and shunting was 20.7 and 22.6 weeks, respectively. see more All 8 procedures were successful, achieving complete in utero drainage. All but one were live births (85.7%) with a median gestational age of 38 weeks. The single case of in utero death occurred 4.7 weeks after successful shunting, and no cause could be identified after autopsy. The rates of preterm birth and premature rupture of membranes were 33.
