017; p less then 0.001) were significantly negatively associated with T-score. The interactions between CO and NOx (p = 0.001) and SO2 and NO2 (p = 0.004) on T-score were statistically significant. An increase in exposure to CO, NO and NOx was associated with a faster decline in T-score in the female participants compared to the male participants. find more In addition, an increase in O3 was associated with a faster increase in T-score in the female participants compared to the male participants. In conclusion, the air pollutants CO, SO2, NO, NO2, and NOx were associated with osteoporosis. In addition, there were interaction and synergetic effects between CO and NOx and SO2 and NO2 on T-score. We also observed differences in the associations between air pollutants and T-score between the female and male participants.
Several studies demonstrate that the provision of personalized lifestyle advice, based on genetics, can help motivate individuals to engage in greater nutrition and physical activity changes compared to the provision of population-based advice. The theoretical mechanism behind this phenomenon is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of providing genetically tailored and population-based lifestyle advice on key constructs of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB).
A pragmatic, cluster randomized controlled trial (
= 140) took place at the East Elgin Family Health Team, in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada. Participants were primarily Caucasian females enrolled in a weight management program (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m
). Weight management program groups were randomized (11) to receive a population-based lifestyle intervention for weight management (Group Lifestyle Balance™ (GLB)) or a lifestyle genomics (LGx)-based lifestyle intervention for weight management (GLB+LGx). Attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control were measured at baseline, immediately after receiving a report of population-based or genetic-based recommendations and after 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Linear mixed models were conducted, controlling for measures of actual behavioural control. All analyses were intention-to-treat by originally assigned groups.
Significant changes (
< 0.05) in attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control tended to be short-term in the GLB group and long-term for the GLB+LGx group. Short-term and long-term between-group differences in measures of subjective norms were discovered, favouring the GLB+LGx group.
The TPB can help provide a theoretical explanation for studies demonstrating enhanced behaviour change with genetic-based lifestyle interventions.

NCT03015012.The mechanical properties of DNA have enabled it to be a structural and sensory element in many nanotechnology applications. While specific base-pairing interactions and secondary structure formation have been the most widely utilized mechanism in designing DNA nanodevices and biosensors, the intrinsic mechanical rigidity and flexibility are often overlooked. In this article, we will discuss the biochemical and biophysical origin of double-stranded DNA rigidity and how environmental and intrinsic factors such as salt, temperature, sequence, and small molecules influence it. We will then take a critical look at three areas of applications of DNA bending rigidity. First, we will discuss how DNA's bending rigidity has been utilized to create molecular springs that regulate the activities of biomolecules and cellular processes. Second, we will discuss how the nanomechanical response induced by DNA rigidity has been used to create conformational changes as sensors for molecular force, pH, metal ions, small molecules, and protein interactions. Lastly, we will discuss how DNA's rigidity enabled its application in creating DNA-based nanostructures from DNA origami to nanomachines.Detecting the concentration of Pb2+ ions is important for monitoring the quality of water due to it can become a health threat as being in certain level. In this study, we report a nanomechanical Pb2+ sensor by employing the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor microelectromechanical system (CMOS MEMS)-based piezoresistive microcantilevers coated with PEDOTPSS sensing layers. Upon reaction with Pb2+, the PEDOTPSS layer was oxidized which induced the surface stress change resulted in a subsequent bending of the microcantilever with the signal response of relative resistance change. This sensing platform has the advantages of being mass-produced, miniaturized, and portable. The sensor exhibited its sensitivity to Pb2+ concentrations in a linear range of 0.01-1000 ppm, and the limit of detection was 5 ppb. Moreover, the sensor showed the specificity to Pb2+, required a small sample volume and was easy to operate. Therefore, the proposed analytical method described here may be a sensitive, cost-effective and portable sensing tool for on-site water quality measurement and pollution detection.Because of the specific characteristics, like high vehicular mobility, unstable topology, and interruption of inter-vehicle wireless communication, it is hard to make a perfect decision on packet forwarding in highly dynamic topology VANETs. Especially in a sparse urban environment, the poor connectivity of nodes will mostly cause problems such as data packet loss and routing redundancy. Therefore, how to choose the best relay node becomes a key challenge in the design of fast and reliable routing protocols. This paper presents real-time effective information traffic routing (RTEIT), which provides an optimal route for forwarding the data packets toward their destination when choosing the relay node. RTEIT introduces a new network parameter named effective information traffic which can estimate the connectivity of nodes by the path that has been successfully created. Moreover, for avoiding unexpected communication interruption, we propose a new formula to evaluate the status of the links via considering the speed, direction, and location information. Finally, the node utility, as the criterion of routing decision, is calculated by effective information traffic and link status. We use the simulator of SUMO and NS-3 platform to evaluate RTEIT, and the results are compared with GPSR MOPR, and MM-GPSR. The evaluation results demonstrate that RTEIT outperforms in terms of packet loss rate, end-to-end delay, and network yield.
