Previous neuroimaging studies have extensively evaluated the structural and functional connectivity of the Ventral Attention Network (VAN) and its role in reorienting attention in the presence of a salient (pop-out) stimulus. However, a detailed understanding of the "directed" functional connectivity within the VAN during the process of reorientation remains elusive. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have not adequately addressed this issue due to a lack of appropriate temporal resolution required to capture this dynamic process. The present study investigates the neural changes associated with processing salient distractors operating at a slow and a fast time scale using custom-designed experiment involving visual search on static images and dynamic motion tracking, respectively. We recorded high-density scalp electroencephalography (EEG) from healthy human volunteers, obtained saliency-specific behavioral and spectral changes during the tasks, localized the sources underlying the spectral power modulations with individual-specific structural MRI scans, reconstructed the waveforms of the sources and finally, investigated the causal relationships between the sources using spectral Granger-Geweke Causality (GGC). We found that salient stimuli processing, across tasks with varying spatio-temporal complexities, involves a characteristic modulation in the alpha frequency band which is executed primarily by the nodes of the VAN constituting the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), the insula and the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC). The directed functional connectivity results further revealed the presence of bidirectional interactions among prominent nodes of right-lateralized VAN, corresponding only to the trials with saliency. click here Thus, our study elucidates the invariant network mechanisms for processing saliency in visual attention tasks across diverse time-scales.Although gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is of particular importance for efficient motor functioning, very little is known about the relationship between regional GABA levels and motor performance. Some studies suggest this relation to be subject to age-related differences even though literature is scarce. To clarify this matter, we employed a comprehensive approach and investigated GABA levels within young and older adults across multiple motor tasks as well as multiple brain regions. Specifically, 30 young and 30 older adults completed a task battery of three different bimanual tasks. Furthermore, GABA levels were obtained within bilateral primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1), bilateral dorsal premotor cortex, the supplementary motor area and bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results indicated that older adults, as compared to their younger counterparts, performed worse on all bimanual tasks and exhibited lower GABA levels in bilateral SM1 only. Moreover, GABA levels across the motor network and DLPFC were differentially associated with performance in young as opposed to older adults on a manual dexterity and bimanual coordination task but not a finger tapping task. Specifically, whereas higher GABA levels related to better manual dexterity within older adults, higher GABA levels predicted poorer bimanual coordination performance in young adults. By determining a task-specific and age-dependent association between GABA levels across the cortical motor network and performance on distinct bimanual tasks, the current study advances insights in the role of GABA for motor performance in the context of aging.As currently understood, the genus Octodon contains five species degus, lunatus, bridgesii, pacificus, and ricardojeda. Previous phylogenetic studies suggest that genus specific diversity is underestimated. In order to evaluate the taxonomic diversity of Octodon, we implemented unilocus (cytochrome-b) and multilocus (cytochrome-b + 4 nuclear genes) species delimitation methods. Octodon degus was recovered as a sister of the other species of the genus. The unilocus bGMYC and mPTP methods, based on cytochrome-b sequences, delimits 11 and 7 candidate species respectively, and both methods fail to recognize O. pacificus from O. ricardojeda. Results of the multilocus analysis (BPP) vary as a function of the dataset used. When the five genes are used 11 species are delimited, while eight species are delimited when only the nuclear genes are used. Octodon bridgesii is shown as comprising at least two species (one on the Pacific coast and the typical form found on the Andean slopes), while O. ricardojeda may comprise two species (one on the Chilean side of the Andes and the other in Argentina). Likewise, both multilocus matrices recover O. pacificus as a distinct species. This shows that species diversity of Octodon is underestimated. Remarkably, many of the delimited species based on genetic data are morphologically differentiated in cranio-dental characteristics. However, a pair of species has not achieved morphological differentiation, being cryptic species. Finally, the incongruence between mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies suggests that processes such as incomplete lineage sorting and/or introgression have been present during the radiation of the genus.
Various vaginal reconstructive procedures have been described for patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. We describe the success of a novel laparoscopic vaginoplasty procedure using an anteroposterior peritoneal pull-down technique.

Four patients with MRKH syndrome underwent a modified laparoscopic Davydov procedure using an anteroposterior peritoneal pull-down technique with a transverse laparoscopic incision below the strand. Anatomical success was achieved in all patients, allowing easy introduction of 2 fingers, an epithelialized neovagina, and a mean length of 8.0 cm (range 7.0-9.0cm). All 3 patients who attempted sexual intercourse were successful, and neovagina size was adequately maintained at the long-term follow-up in the remaining patient.

This novel procedure presents as a feasible and an effective approach for vaginal reconstruction in patients with MRKH syndrome.
