Our aim was to identify the presence of CRISPR cas in Salmonella and its response to heat in the presence of iron. Whole genomes of Salmonella (n = 50) of seven serovars were compared to identify the presence of CRISPR cas genes, direct-repeats and spacers. All Salmonella genomes had all cas genes present except S. Newport 2393 which lacked these genes. Gene-specific primers were used to confirm the absence of these genes in S. Newport 2393. The presence/absence of CRISPR cas genes was further investigated among 469 S. Newport genomes from PATRIC with 283 genomes selected for pan-genome analysis. The response of eleven Salmonella strains of various serovars to gradual heat in ferrous and ferric forms of iron was investigated. A total of 32/283 S. Newport genomes that lacked all CRISPR cas genes clustered together. S. Newport 2393 was the most heat-sensitive strain at higher iron levels (200 and 220 pm) in ferrous and ferric forms of iron. The absence of CRISPR cas genes in S. Newport 2393 may contribute to its increase in heat sensitivity and iron may play a role in this. The high reduction in numbers of most Salmonella strains exposed to heat makes it unfeasible to extract RNA and conduct transcription studies. Further studies should be conducted to validate the survival of Salmonella when exposed to heat in the presence/absence of CRISPR cas genes and different iron levels.Freshwater smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis) is a planktivorous fish found in the river of South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia. Here, we characterized and compared the bacterial communities in the gut and skin of freshwater smelts. We amplified, sequenced, and analyzed the V4 regions of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from freshwater smelts. The microbial diversity in the skin (375 OTUs) was much greater than that in the gut (250 OTUs). At the phylum level, Proteobacteria (gut 51.5%; skin 52.9%), Firmicutes (gut 30.6%; skin 25.4%), Bacteroidetes (gut 7.7%; skin 14.7%), and Actinobacteria (gut 5.2%; skin 3.8%) were predominant in both organs. At the genus level, Sphingomonas (gut 24.9%; skin 4.4%, P  less then  0.01) was more abundant in the gut, whereas Acinetobacter (gut 0.8%; skin 11.8%, P = 0.02) and Pseudomonas (gut 0.3%; skin 2.1%, P = 0.01) were more abundant in the skin. Both beneficial (Lactobacillus) and harmful (Staphylococcus and Streptococcus) bacteria were detected in both organs, even under freshwater conditions. These results revealed that smelts have their own unique microbial communities in the gut and skin. Our findings broaden the understanding of planktivorous freshwater fish microbiomes and provide new insights into fish microbiomes for ensuring food safety.
We aimed to map evidence on the development of mental health care in Central Asia after 1991.

We conducted a scoping review complemented by an expert review. We searched five databases for peer-reviewed journal articles and conducted grey literature searching. The reference lists of included articles were screened for additional relevant publications.

We included 53 articles (Kazakhstan 13, Kyrgyzstan 14, Tajikistan 10, Uzbekistan 9, Turkmenistan 2, Multinational 5). Only 9 were published in internationally recognised journals. In the 1990's mental health services collapsed following a sharp decline in funding, and historically popular folk services re-emerged as an alternative. Currently, modernised mental health policies exist but remain largely unimplemented due to lack of investment and low prioritisation by governments. Psychiatric treatment is still concentrated in hospitals, and community-based and psycho-social services are almost entirely unavailable. Stigma is reportedly high throughout the region, psychiatric myths are widespread, and societal awareness of human rights is low. With the exception of Kyrgyzstan, user involvement is virtually absent. After many years of stagnation, however, political interest in mental health is beginning to show, along with some promising service developments.

In this short review, the cellular consequences of recurrent hypoglycaemia, with a particular focus on the brain, are discussed. Using the ventromedial hypothalamus as an exemplar, this review highlights how recurrent hypoglycaemia has an impact on the specialised cells in the brain that are critical to the regulation of glucose homeostasis and the counterregulatory response to hypoglycaemia. In these cells, recurrent hypoglycaemia initiates a series of adaptations that ensure that they are more resilient to subsequent hypoglycaemia, but this leads to impaired hypoglycaemia awareness and a paradoxical increased risk of severe hypoglycaemia. This review also highlights how hypoglycaemia, as an oxidative stressor, may also exacerbate chronic hyperglycaemia-induced increases in oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to damage to vulnerable brain regions (and other end organs) and accelerating cognitive decline. Pre-clinical research indicates that glucose recovery following hypoglycaemia is considered a period where reactive oxygen species generation and oxidative stress are pronounced and can exacerbate the longer-term consequence of chronic hypoglycaemia. It is proposed that prior glycaemic control, hypoglycaemia and the degree of rebound hyperglycaemia interact synergistically to accelerate oxidative stress and inflammation, which may explain why increased glycaemic variability is now increasingly considered a risk factor for the complications of diabetes.
