This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC10) and generate normative data for Chinese adolescents. A total of 24,499 participants (male 52.1%, mean age 13.3 years) were enrolled in the school-based survey among 132 secondary schools in Hong Kong during 2017. The CD-RISC10 showed high reliability and confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional structure. Metric invariance across the gender, age, and grade subgroups was demonstrated. CD-RISC10 scores were positively correlated with psychological well-being and negatively correlated with mental distress. Male and younger students had higher resilience scores. There were significant interaction effects of gender and age/grade, with CD-RISC10 scores decreasing with age/grade in females while similar trends were not observed in males. Overall, the findings suggest that CD-RISC10 is appropriate for use in Chinese adolescents. The availability of normative data will facilitate the interpretation and comparison of research results in future studies.Based on an embodied account of language comprehension, this study investigated the dynamic characteristics of children and adults' perceptual simulations during sentence comprehension, using a novel paradigm to assess the perceptual simulation of objects moving up and down a vertical axis. The participants comprised adults (N = 40) and 6-, 8-, and 10-year-old children (N = 116). After listening in experimental trials to sentences implying that objects moved upward or downward, the participants were shown pictures and had to decide as quickly as possible whether the objects depicted had been mentioned in the sentences. The target pictures moved either up or down and then stopped in the middle of the screen. Here, we assess the impact of the verbal instruction, the task relevance of the effect stimuli and the presentation of post-response effects on the expression of action-effect associations. The results show that an instruction stressing the stimulus-effect correspondence prompts participants to utilize the presented effects more than an instruction stressing the stimulus-response correspondence. Furthermore, the induced action-effect associations were only expressed when the effects were relevant for the task and when post-response effects were presented in the test phase. These findings show the importance of the particular task construction for the expression of the experimentally manipulated action-effect knowledge.The main research question of this study is how the processing of information relates to different contextual characteristics. More specifically, how the context is associated with efficiency of information processing (success and speed), size of chunks, speed of chunk processing and the recall of a chunk. The research domain was the game of chess. The efficiency of information processing and the chunk characteristics were defined with the reconstruction of sequences of chess moves. Context variables were defined using a slightly adapted chess program. Variables on information dispersion, deviation, complexity and positivity were extracted in each chess position. Overall, the results showed that higher dispersion and complexity and lower positivity of information in a context lead to less efficient information processing. The results support the assumptions of the cognitive load theory about the negative effects of external factors burden on information processing and working memory. Our results also support the ACT-R theory, which suggests that more frequent information has a higher activation level and can therefore be retrieved more easily and quickly. The results are also congruent with the positivity effect, which proposes that it is easier to remember positive information than negative information. The findings of our study can be beneficial for the development of intelligent tutoring systems and the design of human-computer interaction systems.The efficient processing of complex visual environments is essential for effective functioning. In the natural environment, processing the context is as important as the processing of the target object since no object can be found in isolation. Congruent object-context associations in a visual scene facilitate object recognition, whereas incongruent associations decrease performance accuracy. Although there is a performance reduction, incongruent scenes are reported to have a perceptual bias due to the reallocation of the attentional resources towards the associated semantic conflict. Another key attribute that prepares the visual system to identify the important aspects of the environment is valence, and any visual scene can be classified into one of the three valence categories. Hence, the current study was designed to investigate how valence influences the perceptual bias towards incongruent object-context associations. An intermittent binocular rivalry task was used to measure the perceptual bias across valence categories. The results revealed a significant predominance of incongruent pictures when the associated valence was negative and neutral and remained unbiased for positive valence. We propose a valence-congruency interaction in which perceptual bias towards incongruence is greatly influenced by valence.A focus of recent research is to understand the role of our own response goals in the selection of information that will be encoded in episodic memory. For example, if we respond to a target in the presence of distractors, an important aspect under study is whether the distractor and the target share a common response (congruent) or not (incongruent). Some studies have found that congruent objects tend to be grouped together and stored in episodic memory, whereas other studies found that targets in the presence of incongruent distractors are remembered better. Our current research seems to support both views. We used a Tulving-based definition of episodic memory to differentiate memory from episodic and non-episodic traces. In this task, participants first had to classify a blue object as human or animal (target) which appeared in the presence of a green one (distractor) that could belong to the same category as the target (congruent); to the opposite one (incongruent); or to an irrelevant one (neutral). Later they had to report the identity (What), location (Where) and time (When) of both target objects (which had been previously responded to) and distractors (which had been ignored).
