18 %) was obtained after extaction with subcritical butane. The presence of umbelliprenin in Artemisia plant species has been reported herein for the first time. This coumarin may represent the biosynthetic precursors of sesquiterpenyloxycoumarins with more complex structures typically found in this genus. The paper presents development and validation of a RP-HPLC-PDA method for quantification of 30 phenolic constituents of the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.) flower, a traditional European herbal medicine with a unique and complex composition. The target analytes were selected from over 50 active compounds present in the investigated plant material, and their separation was optimized on a C18 Ascentis Express fused-core column (2.7 μm, 150 mm × 4.6 mm), in a step-by-step process, in terms of elution solvents, gradient profile, temperature, and flow rate. The final procedure was carried out with an acetonitrile-tetrahydrofuran gradient at a flow rate of 1.09 mL/min and column temperature of 28°C. Under those conditions, the matrix peaks were satisfactorily separated within 35 min. The validation showed good precision (RSD 0.9998), and sensitivity (LODs 0.51-2.05 ng) of the method. The real sample analysis demonstrated its applicability for quantification of the phenolics both in commercial samples of P. spinosa flowers (different manufacturers and years of collection), as well as in the extracts (of different polarity) prepared thereof. Thus, the developed procedure proved to be a useful tool in quality control, and the optimization approach might serve as a practical guideline for LC-method development in complex matrices. The small intestine (SI) is difficult to regenerate or reconstruct due to its complex structure and functions. Recent developments in stem cell research, advanced engineering technologies, and regenerative medicine strategies bring new hope of solving clinical problems of the SI. This review will first summarize the structure, function, development, cell types, and matrix components of the SI. Then, the major cell sources for SI regeneration are introduced, and state-of-the-art biofabrication technologies for generating engineered SI tissues or models are overviewed. Furthermore, in vitro models and in vivo transplantation, based on intestinal organoids and tissue engineering, are highlighted. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed to help direct future applications for SI repair and regeneration. BACKGROUND Most of the epilepsy longitudinal studies have analyzed children. However, in endemic regions, such as Brazil, neurocysticercosis accounts for many adult-onset epilepsy cases. So, the main objective of this study was to identify the clinical predictors associated with drug-resistant adult-onset epilepsy in Brazil during a long-term follow-up. METHODS We followed 302 individuals with adult-onset epilepsy for 9.8 years in our University Hospital. Structured questionnaires about drug-resistant epilepsy were applied. The presence of drug-resistant epilepsy was the primary outcome. We used multilevel linear modeling in our data analysis. RESULTS Overall 47 (15.6%) individuals presented drug-resistant epilepsy and the etiology was structural in 70.2% of them, while infectious etiology was present in 8.5% of this group. Infectious etiology occurred in 25.9% (n = 66) of the patients from the nondrug-resistant group. Those with developmental delay were two times more likely to present seizures. Structural epilepsy etiology was associated with an increased chance of relapsing. Poor school performance and abnormal electroencephalogram were also associated with an increased chance of seizures. CONCLUSION The course of epilepsy was favorable in the majority of our patients, and drug-resistant epilepsy rates were similar to those found in other studies, although we evaluated older individuals with higher levels of infectious etiology. Also, we found that neurocysticercosis was associated with well-controlled epilepsy, while structural epilepsy was directly related to the occurrence of seizures. We also hypothesized that the smaller size of lesions found in neurocysticercosis could contribute to better treatment response. Chromium (Cr) poses serious consequences on human and animal health due to its potential carcinogenicity. The present study aims at preparing a novel biochar derived from Chenopodium quinoa crop residues (QBC), its activation with magnetite nanoparticles (QBC/MNPs) and strong acid HNO3 (QBC/Acid) to evaluate their batch and column scale potential to remove Cr (VI) from polluted water. The QBC, QBC/MNPs and QBC/Acid were characterized with SEM, FTIR, EDX, XRD as well as point of zero charge (PZC) to get an insight into their adsorption mechanism. The impact of different process parameters including dose of the adsorbent (1-4 g/L), contact time (0-180 min), initial concentration of Cr (25-200 mg/L) as well as solution pH (2-8) was evaluated on the Cr (VI) removal from contaminated water. The results revealed that QBC/MNPs proved more effective (73.35-93.62-%) for the Cr (VI) removal with 77.35 mg/g adsorption capacity as compared with QBC/Acid (55.85-79.8%) and QBC (48.85-75.28-%) when Cr concentration was changed from 200 to 25 mg/L. The isothermal experimental results follow the Freundlich adsorption model rather than Langmuir, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm models. While kinetic adsorption results were well demonstrated by pseudo second order kinetic model. Column scale experiments conducted at steady state exhibited excellent retention of Cr (VI) by QBC, QBC/MNPs and QBC/Acid at 50 and 100 mg Cr/L. The results showed that this novel biochar (QBC) and its modified forms (QBC/Acid and QBC/MNPs) are applicable with excellent reusability and stability under acidic conditions for the practical treatment of Cr (VI) contaminated water. Microplastics have become an inevitable component of our environment. Worldwide, free public fountains are common and one of the best sources of drinking water which are being installed with one of the viewpoints of reducing single-use plastics bottle consumption. this website However, the state of knowledge on how microplastics might be affecting in those free public drinking fountains is unknown. In this study, free drinking water fountains from 42 metro stations in Mexico City were being looked into for the occurrence of microplastics and investigated their shape type, size, abundance, distribution, polymer composition and surface morphology. Microplastics were detected in all the samples analyzed. The results revealed the significant abundance of microplastics ranging from 5 ± 2 to 91 ± 14 L-1 in drinking water with an overall average of 18 ± 7 microplastics L-1. Transparent fibers (69%) were predominant in the identified microplastics followed by blue (24%) and red colored (7%) fibers. The most frequent microplastics dimensions ranged between 0.
