Thus, the specific annual pattern of accumulation of temperature from late winter to early spring is a critical factor in determining the timing of cambial reactivation in trees.Atmospheric and room-temperature plasma (ARTP) has been successfully developed as a useful mutation tool for mutation breeding of various microbes and plants as well animals by genetic alterations. However, understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological responses to ARTP irradiation is still limited. Therefore, to gain a molecular understanding of how irradiation with ARTP damages DNA, we irradiated the artificially synthesized mononucleotides of dATP, dTTP, dGTP, and dCTP, and the oligonucleotides of dA8, dT8, dG8, dC8, and dA2dT2dG2dC2 as chemical building blocks of DNA with ARTP for 1-4 min, identified the mononucleotide products using 31P- and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and identified the oligonucleotide products using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) during ARTP treatment. The observed 31P-and 1H-NMR spectrum signals for the plasma-treated and untreated mononucleotides indicated that dATP was less stable to plasma irradiation than the other mononucleotides. The oligonucleotides after treatment with ARTP were found to have been broken into small fragments as shown by mass spectrometry, with the cleaved bonds and produced fragments identified according to their expected spectral m/z values or molecular weights derived from their m/z values. The stabilities of the oligonucleotides differed to ARTP irradiation, with dT8 being the most stable and was more beneficial to stabilizing single-stranded oligonucleotide structures compared to the other base groups (A, G, and C). This was consistent with the average potential energy level obtained by the molecular dynamic simulation of the oligonucleotides, i.e., dT8 > dC8 > dA8 > dG8 > dA2dT2dG2dC2. In summary, we found that ARTP treatment caused various structural changes to the oligonucleotides that may account for the wide and successful applications reported for ARTP-induced mutation breeding of various organisms.Speaking more than one language has been associated with enhanced cognitive capacities. Here we evaluated whether bilingual individuals have advantages in visual tracking attention. Adult bilingual (n = 35) and monolingual (n = 35) participants were tested in the Multiple Object Tracking task (MOT). In one condition, the MOT was performed by itself establishing the baseline performance of each group, and in the other condition, it was performed while participants counted backward out loud in their mother tongue. At baseline, the average speed tracking threshold of bilinguals was not better than that of the monolinguals. Importantly, for bilinguals, counting backward decreased their threshold by only 15%, but, for monolinguals, it decreased it three times as much. This result suggests that bilingualism confers advantages to visual tracking attention when dual tasking is required, extending the evidence that bilingualism affords cognitive benefits beyond verbal communication.Schizophrenia is a progressive disorder characterized by multiple psychotic relapses. After every relapse, patients may not fully recover, and this may lead to a progressive loss of functionality. Pharmacological treatment represents a key factor to minimize the biological, psychological and psychosocial impact of the disorder. The number of relapses and the duration of psychotic episodes induce a potential neuronal damage and subsequently, neurodegenerative processes. Thus, a comparative study was performed, including forty healthy controls and forty-two SZ patients divided into first-episode psychosis (FEP) and chronic SZ (CSZ) subgroups, where the CSZ sub group was subdivided by antipsychotic treatment. In order to measure the potential neuronal damage, plasma levels of β-III tubulin, neurofilament light chain (Nf-L), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were performed. The results revealed that the levels of these proteins were increased in the SZ group compared to the control group (P  less then  0.05). Moreover, multiple comparison analysis showed highly significant levels of β-III tubulin (P = 0.0002), Nf-L (P = 0.0403) and GFAP (P  less then  0.015) in the subgroup of CSZ clozapine-treated. In conclusion, β-III tubulin, Nf-L and GFAP proteins may be potential biomarkers of neurodegeneration and progression in SZ.A crucial challenge in engineering modern, integrated systems is to produce robust designs. However, quantifying the robustness of a design is less straightforward than quantifying the robustness of products. For products, in particular engineering materials, intuitive, plain language terms of strong versus weak and brittle versus ductile take on precise, quantitative meaning in terms of stress-strain relationships. Here, we show that a "systems physics" framing of integrated system design produces stress-strain relationships in design space. From these stress-strain relationships, we find that both the mathematical and intuitive notions of strong versus weak and brittle versus directly characterize the robustness of designs. We use this to show that the relative robustness of designs against changes in problem objectives has a simple graphical representation. This graphical representation, and its underlying stress-strain foundation, provide new metrics that can be applied to classes of designs to assess robustness from feature- to system-level.Our recent studies, using (SWRxNZB)F1 (SNF1) mice, showed a potential contribution of the gut microbiota and pro-inflammatory immune responses of the gut mucosa to systemic autoimmunity in lupus. Here, using this mouse model, we determined the abundance and the nAg reactivity of IgA antibody produced in the intestine under lupus susceptibility. Intestinal lymphoid tissues from SNF1 mice, females particularly, showed significantly higher frequencies of nAg (dsDNA and nucleohistone) reactive IgA producing B cells compared to B6 females. Most importantly, younger age fecal IgA -abundance and -nAg reactivity of lupus-prone mice showed a positive correlation with eventual systemic autoimmunity and proteinuria onset. Depletion of gut microbiota in SNF1 mice resulted in the diminished production of IgA in the intestine and the nAg reactivity of these antibodies. selleckchem Overall, these observations show that fecal IgA features, nuclear antigen reactivity particularly, at preclinical stages/in at-risk subjects could be predictive of autoimmune progression.
