There is increasing interest in the potential of trees to sequester carbon (C) in above- and below-ground stocks to mitigate against increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG). This study determined whether pasture-tree (PT) systems influence soil C stocks compared with open pasture (OP) by sampling four sites with trees aged 14 to16 years. Poplars (Populus spp.) at Tikokino and Woodville and alders (Alnus spp.) at Poukawa and Ruakura were planted on contrasting soils (Haplustands, Endoaquepts, Durustalfs and Humaquepts, respectively). Trees at all four sites were arranged in partial-Nelder radial planting designs, with five stem densities ranging from 67 to 1276 stems ha-1. Soils were sampled at five stem density classes, along with adjacent OP areas in the same paddock, to a depth of 1 m (0-75, 75-150, 150-300, 300-600, 600-1000 mm). At three of the four sites, root mass density was greater (P 0.10). Despite the limited statistical significance, estimates of total soil C mass at Tikokino and Woodville (sites with poplars) were 11 and 18% greater in OP than in PT systems, whereas estimates at Poukawa and Ruakura (sites with alders) were 2 and 6% greater in PT than in OP systems. Under the current conditions, our study suggests that tree species may be an additional factor influencing the C cycle and C accumulation in soils and need to be considered in the building of our soil C inventories. The increasing release of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) or their sulfidized forms into soils have raised concerns about their potential risks to soil ecosystems. Hence, there is a need for novel strategies to remediate metallic NPs pollution in soils. In this study, to explore the feasibility of using earthworm Eisenia fetida to manage soils contaminated with metallic NPs, we simultaneously investigated the chronic soil toxicities of ZnO NPs and ZnS NPs to E. fetida, and the effects of E. fetida on Zn extractability in soils amended with ZnO NPs and ZnS NPs. After a 28 d exposure, survival rate and weight loss of earthworms were not impacted by either ZnO NPs or ZnS NPs at a concentration of 400 mg Zn per kg soil. Further, while ZnO NPs activated earthworm antioxidative system, ZnS NPs resulted in significant alleviation of oxidative damage in earthworm. The presence of earthworms significantly decreased the bioavailability of Zn in ZnO NPs contaminated soil, whereas significantly increased the bioavailability of Zn in ZnS NPs contaminated soil. These findings implied that the earthworm E. fetida could play an important role in altering the mobilization of metals originating from metallic NPs in soils, which may further aid in the development of a method for the treatment of metallic NPs pollution in soils. We report a case of acute pancreatitis that occurred just after an elective screening colonoscopy; this is a rare event with very few reported cases. A healthy, asymptomatic male underwent screening colonoscopy at our center and developed abdominal pain and emesis after the procedure. An abdominal X-ray ruled out perforation but laboratory tests revealed elevated levels of amylase and lipase. The patient had no etiological risk factors for pancreatitis. The presumed mechanism of pancreatitis in this case is mechanical and pressure trauma from excessive insufflation, external abdominal pressure, and repeated withdrawal of the colonoscope due to tight angulation of the splenic flexure, a structure that is in close proximity to the pancreatic tail. Acute pancreatitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients who present with abdominal pain after colonoscopy once more common etiologies have been excluded.
