This study investigated the inhibitory effect of baicalin on orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption in rats.

Forty-five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 15 rats each. Fifty grams of force was used to establish an orthodontic tooth movement model. Baicalin (40 mg/kg) was locally injected into rats in the baicalin group at 3-day intervals; concurrently, normal saline was injected into rats in the negative control group. On the 21st day after orthodontic treatment, the tooth movement distance and root resorption area ratio were measured. Histomorphology changes were observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry.

There was no significant difference in tooth movement distance between groups. The root resorption area ratio was significantly lower in the baicalin group than in the negative control group. Runx-2 expression was significantly higher in the baicalin group than in the negative control group, while tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α expression was significantly lower in the baicalin group than in the negative control group.

Several recent studies have shown that the aldosterone synthase gene (
) -344C/T polymorphism is related to cardiovascular diseases. However, whether the -344C allele influences the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Chinese patients with hypertension is unclear.

Chinese patients with essential hypertension were genotyped for the -344C/T polymorphism in
(n = 755; CC, n = 112; CT, n = 361; TT, n = 282) and followed for 11 years for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including stroke, onset of coronary artery disease (CAD), and CAD-related death. Established cardiovascular risk factors were used to adjust the multivariate Cox analysis.

After a mean follow-up period of 7.60 ± 1.12 years, a significantly higher incidence of MACEs was seen in patients with the CC genotype than in those with the CT and TT genotypes. The CC variant was significantly and independently predictive of MACEs (hazard ratio = 2.049), CAD (hazard ratio = 1.754), and stroke (hazard ratio = 2.588), but not CAD-related stroke or death.

Here, we report a 24- year-old woman who presented with acute bilateral orbital emphysema starting one day after cosmetic periorbital carboxytherapy. On physical examination, bilateral non-tender, non-erythematous swelling of both upper and lower lids was noted with crepitus on palpation. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of the patient in both eyes was 10/10 and RAPD was negative. The orbital computed tomography (CT) scan of the patient confirmed bilateral preseptal emphysema extending into orbital space through the orbital septum. Oral prednisolone 50 mg per day was prescribed, and the patient was observed closely. Gradually, periorbital pain and swelling subsided, and the symptoms resolved within one week.Herein, we report the combined use of interscalene brachial plexus block and serratus anterior plane block for surgical removal of a large neoplasm that was embedded deep in the axilla and chest wall of a patient with high-risk hypertension. With the combined use of conventional and novel nerve blocks, the large neoplasm was successfully resected without obvious complications.
Although substance use problems are highly prevalent among adolescents and emerging adults, this population does not regularly receive substance use prevention programming in their communities. Low perceived risk of substance use, which is linked to actual behavior, may contribute to low rates of engagement in community prevention efforts for substance use. To examine this, the current study used a mixed methods approach to (1) examine the relationship between engagement in prevention education and substance use; and, (2) analyze qualitative data on education programs offered in the community to help identify strengths and gaps in prevention resources.
Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from adolescents (age 13-18) and young adults (age 19-25) living in the Southeast, recruited from local schools and community events to participate in a preventive intervention focused on prevention of HIV, substance use, and other risky behaviors. Prior to engagement in this intervention, self-report questingers of tobacco, alcohol, or drug use in the past year. Further, 18% of adolescents had been to a class or program on prevention of alcohol and other drug abuse in the past month and 50.7% had heard, read, or watched an advertisement about prevention of substance use in the past year. Qualitative results Eight overarching themes, each with its own sub-themes, emerged from the participant's responses during the focus groups. Each is described below with representative quotes provided throughout for illustrative purposes. Conclusions Findings revealed several gaps in resources identified by adolescents and young adults that are needed to adequately address substance use, which provide important next steps for substance use prevention among youth.
