Non-invasive imaging with optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be useful in characterizing and managing alopecia. Despite expanding clinical applications of OCT in dermatology, guidelines demonstrating in vivo features of normal and alopecic scalp images remain scant. This pilot study aims to provide an atlas of OCT findings of healthy and alopecia subjects, explore diagnostic quantitative endpoints of alopecia, and compare epidermal thickness and follicular density between scalp regions. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 patients (19-76 years old) were enrolled in the study, including healthy patients (n = 6), and patients with scarring alopecia (n = 12) or non-scarring alopecia (n = 14). An in-line fiber-based swept source OCT was used to image five scalp locations at baseline and 6-month visits. Three investigators evaluated each image for grossSurg. We analyzed the facial expression using facial action coding system (FACS) and examined the muscle mass and characteristics of the facial expression muscles using multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, the relation between these was statistically evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten healthy women in their 40s (43.4 ± 3.0 years, 40-49) were enrolled. The expressive faces were analyzed by facial expression analysis software based on the FACS. The muscle mass and characteristics of the facial expression muscles were investigated using MDCT/MRI. The correlation between an integrated expression intensity value (IEIV) for FACS of the widest possible grin and muscle mass was analyzed. The mean values between the two categorized groups (G-1 and G-2) based on fat infiltration into the muscle were compared. Selleck PF-543 RESULTS A positive correlation is found between the IEIV and the muscle mass. The IEIV of G-1 is significantly larger than the corresponding value of G-2. Hence, the results indicated that the subjects with high IEIV and expressive face had thicker facial expression muscles and little fat infiltration into the muscles. CONCLUSION Our objective imaging diagnostic study using FACS, MDCT, and MRI corroborated the anti-aging medical science about the facial expression muscles related to youthful facial appearance. The results of this research could contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the facial aging process and to the development of cosmetology. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. METHODS Accordingly, the data of 40 patients with organ metastatic cervical cancer treated at our institute from December 2004 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The correlation between clinicopathological characteristics and survival was then evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Psoas muscle index (PMI), calculated from the psoas muscle area at the L3 vertebral-body level using computed tomography images obtained for pretreatment evaluation, was adopted as an index of sarcopenia. RESULTS The median follow-up period was 14 months (range, 1-91 months). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 46.1% and 35.8% for all patients, respectively. Receiver operating characteristic curve maximizing the area under the curve showed that the optimal PMI for predicting 1-year survival was 3.72 cm2 /m2 . Patients with a PMI > 3.72 cm2 /m2 had significantly better OS than those with a PMI ≤ 3.72 cm2 /m2 (P = .046). Multivariate analysis revealed that only PMI was significantly associated with OS in patients with organ metastatic cervical cancer. Furthermore, patients with a PMI > 3.72 cm2 /m2 who underwent concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) had a longer OS than those receiving other therapies (P 3.72 cm2 /m2 may benefit from CCRT as an initial treatment. © 2020 American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.A major challenge in medicine is developing potent pain therapies without the adverse effects of opiates. Neuroinflammation and in particular microglial activation have been shown to contribute to these effects. However, the implication of the microglial mu opioid receptor (MOR) is not known. We developed a novel conditional knockout (cKO) mouse line, wherein MOR is deleted in microglia. Morphine analgesic tolerance was delayed in both sexes in cKO mice in the hot plate assay. Opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) as measured in the tail immersion assay was abolished in male cKO mice, and physical dependence to morphine as assessed by naloxone-induced withdrawal was attenuated in female cKO mice. Our results show a sex-dependent contribution of microglial MOR in morphine analgesic tolerance, OIH, and physical dependence. In conclusion, our data suggest that blockade of microglial MOR could represent a therapeutic target for opiate analgesia without the opiate adverse effects. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Synthetic Carbohydrate receptors (SCRs) that selectively recognize cell-surface glycans could be used for detection, drug delivery, or as therapeutics. Here we report the synthesis of seven new C 2h symmetric tetrapodal SCRs. The structures of these SCRs possess a conserved biaryl core, and they vary in the four heterocyclic binding groups that are linked to the biaryl core via secondary amines. Supramolecular association between these SCRs and 5 biologically relevant C 1 -O-octyloxy glycans, α/β-glucoside ( α/β-Glc ), α/β-mannoside ( α/β-Man ), and β-galactoside ( β-Gal ), was studied by mass spectrometry, 1 H NMR titrations, and molecular modeling. These studies revealed that selectivity can be achieved in these tetrapodal SCRs by varying the heterocyclic binding group. We found that SCR017 (3-pyrrole), SCR021 (3-pyridine), and SCR022 (2-phenol) bind only to β-Glc . SCR019 (3-indole) binds only to β-Man. SCR020 (2-pyridine) binds β-Man and α-Man with a preference to the latter. SCR018 (2-indole) binds α-Man and β-Gal with a preference to the former.
