During Enz therapy, there were no significant differences in the incidence of any AEs or AEs ≥ grade 3 between the two groups. However, the incidences of fatigue and appetite loss in group 1 were significantly higher when compared with those in group 2. Furthermore, the combined use of corticosteroid was revealed to be independently associated with the prevention of fatigue and appetite loss during Enz therapy. The results of the present study suggested that the combined use of corticosteroids could reduce the incidence of certain types of AE, particularly fatigue and appetite loss, in mCRPC patients treated with Enz. Copyright © 2020, Spandidos Publications.A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2853669 (A>G) in the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter has recently been reported in chr51,295,349 T>C (T349C), and was shown to be associated with increased cancer risk and poor survival in a specific population. However, at present, the role of this particular SNP with TERT promoter driver mutations and its genetic association with human papilloma virus (HPV) in patients with cervical cancer has not been determined. In the present study, the genetic association of the functional SNP rs2853669 in the presence/absence of TERT promoter hotspot mutations and HPV in patients with cervical cancer of South Indian origin was evaluated. To understand and compare the frequency of the variant allele and its risk association in different cancer types of various populations, the SNP was genotyped in 257 cervical cancer samples and 295 controls, and its associations with TERT promoter hotspot mutations and HPV were analyzed. Furthermore, an extensive search of previously published articles in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science was conducted; a meta-analysis was carried out to elucidate the association of the SNP with different cancer types in global populations. The SNP analysis showed significantly high frequency (41%) of homozygous variant allele rs2853669 (GG) in patients with cervical cancer compared with control samples [Recessive allele model odds ratio (OR)=1.71; 95% CI=1.20-2.43; P=0.003]. No significant interaction was observed between the TERT SNP rs2853669 and HPV status as well as other hotspot TERT promoter (C228T and C250T) mutations determined in our previous study. In addition, the overall meta-analysis revealed a significant association of the SNP rs2853669 with other cancer types in different ethnic populations (OR=1.09; 95% CI=1.03-1.16; P=0.004). The present results suggested that the TERT SNP rs2853669 could play an important role in the risk of cervical cancer in a South Indian population. Copyright © 2019, Spandidos Publications.Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematological malignancy with a poorly understood pathogenesis, especially among patients with no known cytogenetic abnormalities. Furthermore, there is a lack of therapeutic gene targets and diagnostic biomarkers for the effective treatment of AML. The present study aimed to identify candidate biomarkers correlated with the clinical prognosis of patients with AML. Leukemic cells from 5 patients with AML exhibiting a normal karyotype, and hematopoietic cells from 5 healthy donors were processed for RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), and the obtained RNA expression profiles were subjected to weighted gene correlation network analysis. A novel group of genes (the red module) were identified to be significantly associated with AML, and this module contained a closely connected network with 147 nodes, which corresponded to 114 mRNAs. Analysis of the correlation between these mRNAs and blast cell percentage, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) using cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database revealed that CSF3R, ALPL and LMTK2 were negatively associated with the percentage of blast cells, while high expression of these genes was associated with longer OS and DFS in patients with AML. The differential expression of these three genes between patients with AML and healthy control subjects was supported using the Genotype-Tissue Expression and TCGA databases and was further confirmed using reverse transcription-quantitative (RT-qPCR). These genes exhibited significantly lower expression in patients with AML compared with control subjects. The results indicated that CSF3R, ALPL and LMTK2 exhibit the potential to be prognostic biomarkers. However, the biological functions of these three candidate genes need to be assessed in further studies. A few cases of extraskeletal osteosarcoma have shown extensive hemorrhagic changes or bleeding due to its high-grade malignancy; however, to the best of our knowledge, no previous reports have described the pathological characteristics of tumors with non-hemorrhagic cystic change. The present report discusses three cases involving cystic lesions with a solid area at the periphery that arose in soft tissues. CA3 cell line The large cystic spaces contained only yellowish-brown fluid and little or no blood, with no clear pathological necrotic tissue. The solid component comprised a focal area of osteoid production by highly anaplastic sarcomatous cells. All of the cases showed high-grade malignancy histologically, and the average maximum diameter was approximately 175 mm. However, there remain challenges with techniques such as laparoscopy-endoscopy cooperative surgery (LECS) and non-exposed endoscopic wall-inversion surgery (NEWS). The aim of the present study was to further investigate the feasibility, efficacy and safety of laparoscopy-assisted endoscopic full-thickness resection (ETFR) of SETs and to evaluate the clinical outcomes. This retrospective study included 16 patients with upper gastrointestinal SETs who underwent laparoscopy-assisted EFTR between July 2016 and December 2017. The patient characteristics, surgical outcomes, postoperative course, results of the histopathological examination and short-term outcomes were reviewed and analyzed.
