].Although dementia is the largest independent risk factor for delirium and leads to poor health outcomes, we know little about how to prevent delirium in persons with dementia (PWD). see more The purpose of the current systematic literature review was to identify interventions designed to prevent delirium in older PWD. Seven studies meeting inclusion criteria were extracted. Five studies were in the acute care setting and two were community settings. One study used a randomized controlled trial design. Five of the seven interventions comprised multiple components addressing delirium risk factors, including education. Two studies addressed delirium by administration of medication or vitamin supplementation. Using the GRADE framework for the evaluation of study quality, we scored three studies as moderate and four studies as low. Thus, high-quality research studies to guide how best to prevent delirium in PWD are lacking. Although more research is required, the current review suggests that multicomponent approaches addressing delirium risk factors should be considered by health care professionals when supporting older PWD. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate nurses' adherence to a nurse-driven fluid resuscitation protocol at one adult burn center. Their secondary goal was to establish that the use of a nursing-driven protocol did not result in over resuscitation. Following implementation of a nurse-driven burn resuscitation protocol, a 48-hour data resuscitation data collection tool was developed by the burn physicians and nurses. All resuscitations were reviewed in real-time and in burn leadership meeting to identify opportunities for improvement. Follow-up with nursing staff was done in real time by the clinical nurse specialist following each burn resuscitation. Twenty-two patients requiring formal fluid resuscitation were included in the review. Patients had a median age of 36.5(IQR 38.74) years and were predominantly male. They found that in the first 24 hours that patients received 3.47 ml/kg/hr and then in the next 24 hours they received an average of 2.68 ml/kg/hr. All 22 patients' resuscitation was initiated using the Parkland formula in the emergency department, and nurses were successful in consistently adjusting fluid infusions consistent with the protocol. Using a multidisciplinary approach and preparatory and real-time education processes, burn nurses can successfully guide burn resuscitation. Providing education and follow-up in real time can improve the process.
Understanding contexts in which social harms from drinking occur can help develop context-based harm reduction efforts. However, there is little knowledge of specific drinking contexts where such harms occur and whether these are gender or age specific. We aimed to investigate associations of a range of drinking contexts and social harms from drinking among young adults at age 30.
We used data from 2187 30-year-old adults. Latent constructs of gender-specific drinking contexts were created using factor analysis. We performed multivariate logistic regression between drinking contexts and a range of social harms from drinking, separately by gender.
After accounting for social roles and binge drinking, gender-specific solitary drinking contexts ('home drinking' for men and 'daytime drinking' for women) were positively associated with marital problems and problems with other family members and friends. Conversely, 'social drinking' was not. Work-related drinking among men was associated with marital/intimatrent findings also highlight the need to consider gender to inform context-based harm reduction measures and to widen the age target for these beyond emerging adults.Here, we review the literature on the development and application of hydrogel compounds for insect pest management. Researchers have used hydrogel compounds for the past few decades to achieve the controlled release of various contact insecticides, but in recent years, hydrogel compounds have also been used to absorb and deliver targeted concentrations of toxicants within a liquid bait to manage insect pests. The highly absorbent hydrogel acts as a controlled-release formulation that keeps the liquid bait available and palatable to the target pests. This review discusses the use of various types of hydrogel compounds in pest management based on different environmental settings (e.g., agricultural, urban, and natural areas), pest systems (e.g., different taxa), and modes of insecticide delivery (e.g., spray vs bait). Due to their unique physicochemical properties, hydrogel compounds have great potential to be developed into new and efficacious pest management strategies with minimal environmental impact. We will also discuss the future research and development of hydrogels in this review.
The western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) is a sexually dimorphic poeciliid fish known for its worldwide biological invasion and therefore an important research model for studying invasion biology. This organism may also be used as a suitable model to explore sex chromosome evolution and reproductive development in terms of differentiation of ZW sex chromosomes, ovoviviparity, and specialization of reproductive organs. However, there is a lack of high-quality genomic data for the female G. affinis; hence, this study aimed to generate a chromosome-level genome assembly for it.
The chromosome-level genome assembly was constructed using Oxford nanopore sequencing, BioNano, and Hi-C technology. G. affinis genomic DNA sequences containing 217 contigs with an N50 length of 12.9 Mb and 125 scaffolds with an N50 length of 26.5 Mb were obtained by Oxford nanopore and BioNano, respectively, and the 113 scaffolds (90.4% of scaffolds containing 97.9% nucleotide bases) were assembled into 24 chromosomes (pseudo-chromosomes) by Hi-C. The Z and W chromosomes of G. affinis were identified by comparative genomic analysis of female and male G. affinis, and the mechanism of differentiation of the Z and W chromosomes was explored. Combined with transcriptome data from 6 tissues, a total of 23,997 protein-coding genes were predicted and 23,737 (98.9%) genes were functionally annotated.
The high-quality female G. affinis reference genome provides a valuable omics resource for future studies of comparative genomics and functional genomics to explore the evolution of Z and W chromosomes and the reproductive developmental biology of G. affinis.
