What Causes Mesothelioma Other Than Asbestos?
Asbestos is a toxic mineral that breaks down into microscopic fibers. These fibres become airborne when disturbed, and can be inhaled by people who inhale them. Inhaling these fibres can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Asbestos exposure is the sole confirmed cause of mesothelioma. Inhaling asbestos or eating asbestos can cause mesothelioma as it irritates and alters cells in the lung's lining and abdomen, as well as the heart the testes.
1. Smoking
Mesothelioma is a rare and fatal cancer that is extremely rare and fatal. It affects the thin layer of tissue that covers many internal organs. It can occur in the tissue surrounding each lung (pleural mesothelioma) or the abdominal lining and chest cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma). It can also occur around the heart or testicles (pericardial mesothelioma).
Asbestos is a class of minerals made up of tiny fibres. It was used to make automobiles, buildings and a myriad of other products between the 1930s and the early 1980s. It was strong inexpensive, affordable, and fire resistant. Workers who worked with asbestos, such as electricians and shipbuilders or steelworkers were at the highest risk. Mesothelioma victims usually develop their cancer years after exposure.
The majority of mesothelioma cases result from exposure to asbestos, however a small number of patients do not have an identifiable external cause. Patients with this condition may have genetic or environment risk factors.
A variety of mesotheliomas have been linked to germline mutations in BAP1. Most often, these are found in families with cancer history. A small proportion of mesotheliomas can be linked to the SV40 virus. SV40 can trigger genes that promote the growth of tumors. It was used in polio vaccines during the 1950s and 1960s. Researchers have found that talcum can increase the risk for mesothelioma. It is believed that women who live with men who have worked around asbestos absorb the tiny fibres on their clothing.
2. Alcohol
Symptoms of mesothelioma can appear between 20 to 60 years after asbestos exposure. This is why it's important to tell your doctor about your asbestos history and to request tests for possible mesothelioma. You should also seek out mesothelioma experts to ensure that you receive the most effective treatment and care.
Inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers are trapped in the mesothelium a thin tissue that surrounds the organs and tissues of your body. The fibers penetrate the cells which causes inflammation and can cause tumors. The most commonly reported symptom of mesothelioma is breathlessness. Other symptoms include chest pain and abdominal pain.
The inflammation from mesothelioma can cause the lungs to expand up, which can make it difficult for patients to breathe. Pleural effusion, also known as pleural fluid buildup is a result of mesothelioma. In controlling the build-up of fluid, it can improve breathlessness.
Smoking increases the risk of developing mesothelioma and other health problems due to asbestos exposure. This is due to smoking alters the way lung tissues function, which could alter the ability of the lungs to clear out asbestos fibers.
Other factors that affect your lifestyle such as a genetic predisposition or a compromised immune system, can increase your risk of mesothelioma. Some of these factors include mesothelioma in the family and a smoking habit. These factors can also affect how long mesothelioma takes to be diagnosed and treated.
3. Drugs
Mesothelioma begins when the genetic constitution of a person is altered (mutates). As these mutations increase the cells become uncontrollable and develop abnormal tumors.
There are a variety of forms of mesothelioma and the symptoms are dependent on which organ or body system is affected. Pleural mesothelioma is the most prevalent form of the cancer, is found in the lungs and is usually associated with chest pain, coughing, and shortness of breath. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which is less frequent but is still a serious condition is located in the abdominal lining. The symptoms of both types often appear similar to those of other illnesses and conditions, making it difficult to determine the cause.
Mesothelioma is mostly caused by asbestos exposure. The mineral that occurs naturally is a group of long, thin and very strong fibers which are found in rocks and soil. It was extensively used during the 20th century for construction materials, car parts and other products until scientists realized its risks to health.
When asbestos is disturbed, the tiny fibers are released into the air and can be inhaled or swallowed. They may settle in the linings of the lungs or stomach, causing irritation. This can lead to mesothelioma. Most people who develop mesothelioma are exposed at work. Workers in the construction and manufacturing industries and railway, automotive and shipbuilders, are at risk. Families of these workers face an increased risk, as they may inhale and inhale asbestos fibers while their loved ones are working.
4. Alcoholism
Symptoms of mesothelioma can differ, but the majority of patients experience at the least shortness of breath and difficulty breathing (dyspnea). Some suffer from chest pain, abdominal discomfort or an overall feeling that something is not right (malaise).
Mesothelioma starts in the tissue that lines your lungs, stomach, heart and other organs. Malignant mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers are entangled in this tissue, causing it to expand abnormally. It takes years for this tissue to begin developing tumors, but once it occurs, cancerous cells develop. Mesothelioma is classified into four distinct types. The most popular type is pleural mesothelioma which affects the lining of your lungs. Other types include peritoneal testicular, and pericardial cancers.
Mesothelioma usually occurs due to asbestos exposure. Pittsburgh asbestos lawsuit is a mineral that occurs naturally that is used in a variety of industries to make insulation, pipes and other products. Most people with mesothelioma were exposed at work either directly or through the air. Mine workers, construction workers and shipyard workers are the most likely to be exposed.
Men are more likely to develop mesothelioma than females and the disease usually is seen in people who are 50 years old or older. This could be because men are more likely than women to have been employed in occupations involving asbestos exposure. A genetic mutation known as BAP1 has also been linked to mesothelioma, but it's extremely rare.
5. Alcohol abuse
Inhaling asbestos fibers or swallowing them causes mesothelioma which is a type of cancer. Even the smallest asbestos particles can get into the lungs, abdomen, or heart, where they cause tissue irritation and damage. Certain asbestos-related illnesses don't manifest until years after exposure.
The first mesothelioma symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain or abdominal discomfort. A lot of people with these symptoms don't know they have mesothelioma until they see a doctor to address any other health issues. Inform your doctor if have ever been exposed to asbestos. This will help you receive a an accurate and quicker diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Asbestos exposure usually causes mesothelioma pleural, which develops in the lung. Other types of mesothelioma are the pericardial and the peritoneal that form in the abdomen and around the heart respectively. Patients at risk for mesothelioma usually worked in industries that employed asbestos, including shipbuilding, construction, and energy production. Veterans were also exposed to asbestos through the military, since it was employed on naval vessels as well as barracks.
Radiation therapy and SV40 and BAP1 viruses are also risk factors. Erionite, a mineral that shares a similar structure as asbestos, can also trigger mesothelioma. Researchers have discovered that disulfiram, also known as Antabuse, which is used to help addicts overcome addiction by preventing the body from processing alcohol, can hinder mesothelioma cancer cell growth.
6. Cancer
Patients suffering from mesothelioma need to be aware of the causes of their condition. This information helps them identify and prevent future cases. Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos, a group of minerals composed of flexible fibers that resist electricity and fire. Asbestos was extensively used in construction until it was banned. These tiny fibers can be inhaled, causing the lining of your stomach or lungs to grow into a cancerous cells. Typically, symptoms don't appear until 20 years after exposure.
Many Americans were exposed during their working life, especially those working in industrial jobs. The risk is higher the more asbestos a person is exposed to and how long they're exposed for. Asbestos exposure is common in the field of painting, insulating roofing, and insulating.
The SV40 virus and erionite, as well as radiation treatment and genetic mutations are among the mesothelioma-related causes. Certain of these are associated with asbestos, while others aren't. For example the germline mutation of BAP1 in certain families could increase mesothelioma risk, but it is extremely rare.
Even if a patient does not remember any mesothelioma exposure it is still recommended to seek medical treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the mesothelioma prognosis. A seasoned mesothelioma lawyer might be able to assist patients identify potential sources of exposure and compensation. This is because mesothelioma lawyers have the experience and resources to look into possible causes of asbestos exposure.
