BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The recent upsurge in online food delivery options has reshaped the food market. The aim of this study was to examine between-city differences and within-city socioeconomic differences in the number of online meal delivery options, meal types, and meal prices. SUBJECTS/METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in three international cities within high-income countries. Across 10 sampled addresses in Chicago (USA), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and Melbourne (Australia), meal delivery options provided by a major international meal delivery company were sampled. Bonferroni adjusted Chi2-tests were conducted to assess between-city differences as well as within-city socioeconomic differences in price levels. RESULTS Across the 10 sampled addresses in each city, there were n = 1668 delivery options in Chicago, n = 1496 in Amsterdam and n = 1159 in Melbourne. In total, 10,220 keywords (representing 148 different meal types) were recorded across all 4323 delivery options. In all three cities, burgers, pizza and Italian were in the top 10 of most advertised meals. Compared with Amsterdam, healthy and meat-free meals were less commonly advertised in Chicago and Melbourne. In Chicago, the number of delivery options for addresses in the most disadvantaged and least disadvantaged neighborhoods were similar. In Amsterdam and Melbourne, a greater number of options was available for the addresses in the least disadvantaged neighborhoods. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the vast number of meal delivery options individuals can source when at home via a meal delivery service, noting the number differs across and within cities. In each city, most food types available for delivery were not considered healthy.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In the general population, there is a popular belief that a vegan diet may be associated with a lower exercise performance due to the lack of certain nutrients in vegan individuals. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine endurance and muscle strength differences between vegan and omnivore participants. SUBJECTS/METHODS We studied 56 healthy young lean physically active women (age 25.6 ± 4.1 years; body mass index 22 ± 1.9 kg/m2). Participants were classified as vegan (n = 28) or omnivore (n = 28) based on their eating habits. All volunteers followed either a vegan or an omnivore diet for at least 2 years. Anthropometric measurements, body composition, estimated maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max), a submaximal endurance test (70% of VO2 max), muscle strength (leg and chest press), and dietary factors were measured. RESULTS Both groups were comparable for physical activity levels, body mass index, percent body fat, lean body mass, and muscle strength. However, vegans had a significantly higher estimated VO2 max (44.5 ± 5.2 vs. 41.6 ± 4.6 ml/kg/min; p = 0.03, respectively) and submaximal endurance time to exhaustion (12.2 ± 5.7 vs. 8.8 ± 3.0 min; p = 0.007, respectively) compared with omnivores. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that a vegan diet does not seem to be detrimental to endurance and muscle strength in healthy young lean women. In fact, our study showed that submaximal endurance might be better in vegans compared with omnivores. Therefore, these findings contradict the popular belief of the general population.To maintain postural stability, unilateral lower-limb amputees (LLAs) heavily rely on visual and vestibular inputs, and somatosensory cues from their intact leg to compensate for missing somatosensory information from the amputated limb. When any of these resources are compromised, LLAs exhibit poor balance control compared to able-bodied individuals. We hypothesized that restoring somatosensation related to the missing limb via direct activation of the sensory nerves in the residuum would improve the standing stability of LLAs. We developed a closed-loop sensory neuroprosthesis utilizing non-penetrating multi-contact cuff electrodes implanted around the residual nerves to elicit perceptions of the location and intensity of plantar pressures under the prosthetic feet of two transtibial amputees. Effects of the sensory neuroprosthesis on balance were quantified with the Sensory Organization Test and other posturographic measures of sway. In both participants, the sensory neuroprosthesis improved equilibrium and sway when somatosensation from the intact leg and visual inputs were perturbed simultaneously. One participant also showed improvement with the sensory neuroprosthesis whenever somatosensation in the intact leg was compromised via perturbations of the platform. These observations suggest the sensory feedback elicited by neural stimulation can significantly improve the standing stability of LLAs, particularly when other sensory inputs are depleted or otherwise compromised.Amiodarone accumulates in the liver, where it increases x-ray attenuation due to its iodine content. We evaluated liver attenuation in patients treated and not treated with amiodarone using true-non-contrast (TNC) and virtual-non-contrast (VNC) images acquired with spectral-detector-CT (SDCT). 142 patients, of which 21 have been treated with amiodarone, receiving SDCT-examinations (unenhanced-chest CT [TNC], CT-angiography of chest and abdomen [CTA-Chest, CTA-Abdomen]) were included. TNC, CTA-Chest, CTA-Abdomen, and corresponding VNC-images (VNC-Chest, VNC-Abdomen) were reconstructed. Liver-attenuation-index (LAI) was calculated as difference between liver- and spleen-attenuation. Liver-attenuation and LAI derived from TNC-images of patients receiving amiodarone were higher. see more Contrary to TNC, liver-attenuation and LAI were not higher in amiodarone patients in VNC-Chest and in VNC-Abdomen. To verify these initial results, a phantom scan was performed and an additional patient cohort included, both confirming that VNC is viable of accurately subtracting iodine of hepatic amiodarone-deposits. This might help to monitor liver-attenuation more accurately and thereby detect liver steatosis as a sign of liver damage earlier as well as to verify amiodarone accumulation in the liver.
