The knowledge of root canal curvature is crucial regarding the prevention of ledge formation, root perforation and the possibility of endodontic instruments' fracture during endodontic treatments. Therefore, a quantification method of the root canal curvature as well as the applicability of diagnostically relevant tomographic three-dimensional (3D) imaging data is necessary. Hereby, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and micro-computed tomography (µCT) data of distal root canals were analysed concerning the continuous three-dimensional curvature of human mandibular molars ( n = 50). The curvature of the canal's three-dimensional centre line was determined by evaluating the tomographic images. The centroids of each root canal slice were identified and approximated by spline curves to obtain the centre line and therefore, its curvature. Comparing the results evaluated from CBCT and µCT images, minimum radii of curvature of 2.6 mm and 2.1 mm were determined, respectively. The observation of the centre line demonstrated the requirement of the three-dimensional imaging data from CBCT and µCT for a reliable curvature analysis. Conclusively, the evaluation of CBCT and µCT images results in comparable radii of curvature. Thus, the application of the introduced method in combination with CBCT applied to patient cases could offer an important preliminary diagnostical step to prevent endodontic treatment complications.We examine the behaviour of acrylic resin-based membranes containing natural anti-oxidants, such as Galla Chinensis tea powder extract (TP) and Taiwanese green propolis (TGP), in different concentrations ranging between 5 and 20 wt %. Membrane morphology was investigated by means of Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), while the UV-curing reaction was monitored by Fourier-Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. In most cases Thermogravimetric (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) and Dynamo-mechanical Thermal (DMT) analyses showed that the desirable characteristics of the UV-cured acrylic resin are not substantially altered by the presence of the organic fillers. The release kinetics of polyphenols and flavonoids, determined in water for TP-containing membranes (ETx) and in ethanol/water mixture (73 v/v) for TGP-containing ones (EPx), was satisfactory, reaching a plateau after 24 h. Finally, preliminary antibacterial tests against S. Epidermidis were performed on the membranes with higher additive amount and gave positive results for ET-type; on the contrary, no inhibitory effect was observed for the tested EP-type membranes.The fermentation pattern of several carbohydrate sources and their interaction with the nature of microbial inoculum was studied. Barley (B), maize (M), sorghum, (S), sugarbeet pulp (BP), citrus pulp (CP) and wheat bran (WB) were tested in an in vitro semicontinuous system maintaining poorly buffered conditions from 0 to 6 h, and being gradually buffered to 6.5 from 8 to 24 h to simulate the rumen pH pattern. Rumen fluid inoculum was obtained from lambs fed with either concentrate and barley straw (CI) or alfalfa hay (FI). The extent of fermentation was higher with CI than FI throughout the incubation (p less then 0.05). Among the substrates, S, BP and M maintained the highest pH (p less then 0.05), whereas CP recorded the lowest pH with both inocula. Similarly, CP recorded the highest gas volume throughout the incubation, followed by WB and B, and S recorded the lowest volume (p less then 0.05). On average, the total volatile fatty acid (VFA), as well as lactic acid concentration, was higher with CP than in the other substrates (p less then 0.05). The microbial structure was more affected by the animal donor of inoculum than by the substrate. The in vitro semicontinuous system allows for the study of the rumen environment acidification and substrate microbial fermentation under intensive feeding conditions.Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2I) have been reported to have renal-protective effects in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). this website This a retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effect of SGLT2I on renal function in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and T2DM. We analyzed 69 consecutive patients with a biopsy-proven NAFLD and T2DM with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) >60 mL/min. Of these 69 patients, 22 received SGLT2I and 47 were treated without SGLT2I. Liver function and eGFR were analyzed at baseline and after three years. Body mass index, liver function and HbA1c improved significantly in both groups. In the total population, the median eGFR declined from 80.7 mL/min at the baseline to 74.9 mL/min at the end of follow-up. The median eGFR at the baseline/end of follow-up was 81.2/80.4 mL/min in patients treated with SGLT2I and 80.2/70.8 mL/min in patients treated without SGLT2I. Multivariate analysis identified an increased FIB-4 index with an odds ratio (OR) of 4.721, (p = 0.045) and SGLT2I treatment (OR 0.263, p = 0.033) as predictive factors for decreased eGFR. SGLT2I treatment has a protective effect on the renal function for NAFLD with T2DM. A long-term, randomized, controlled trial is warranted to confirm the renal protective effect of SGLT2I in NAFLD patients with T2DM.Metallocarboxypeptidases are metal-dependent enzymes, whose biological activity is regulated by inhibitors directed on the metal-containing active site. Some metallocarboxypeptidase inhibitors are induced under stress conditions and have a role in defense against pests. This paper is aimed at investigating the response of the tomato metallocarboxypeptidase inhibitor (TCMP)-1 to Cd and other abiotic stresses. To this aim, the tomato TCMP-1 was ectopically expressed in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, and a yeast two-hybrid analysis was performed to identify interacting proteins. We demonstrate that TCMP-1 is responsive to Cd, NaCl, and abscisic acid (ABA) and interacts with the tomato heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant protein (HIPP)26. A. thaliana plants overexpressing TCMP-1 accumulate lower amount of Cd in shoots, display an increased expression of AtHIPP26 in comparison with wild-type plants, and are characterized by a modulation in the expression of antioxidant enzymes. Overall, these results suggest a possible role for the TCMP-1/HIPP26 complex in Cd response and compartmentalization.
