From what I understand... you feel as if you lack identity, or rather, that you don't wish to be defined by anything; and see those around you as shallow facsimiles of each other - that no one is nearly as unique as they might like to believe. That the world is simplistic. To some degree, you want to learn more about the world, but perhaps feel lost as to what it is you're meant to understand.

You also feel disconnected from society, alienated. You consider yourself good at talking to people but despite this, you don't fit in.

Daydreaming and romanticising, too, seem integral to you. I imagine you, dissatisfied with this life, might wish you could be somewhere else, somewhere less hollow than this lifeless world.

I would say philosophy and poetry are your strong suits based on what you've written.

I think I feel similarly if my assumptions are true. I have always felt dissatisfied myself, and I have never felt like I fit in with anyone. Nor have I ever felt a sense of identity. If anything, I feel defined by my lack of identity more than anything else, like an actor who's meant to play the roles he's given rather than a person with a will of their own.

Anyway, as to what I would recommend...

Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet albums sounds like it might hit the right notes for you. I would also recommend the discographies of Arab Strap and Will Wood, especially the later material of the latter.

My favourite film is Vanilla Sky because of its themes... which might veer into spoiler territory if I were to say too much, so I will simply say it resonated with me and that if you feel we are alike, it may resonate with you as well.

I don't know what I would recommend in terms of literature or otherwise. I've heard Herman Hesse's works often feature themes of self-discovery, though I have yet to read them myself. I want to.

Lastly, I apologise if any of the assumptions I have made about you are wrong. I don't want to come off as if I could understand you better than yourself, because I know I don't.
