5 Laws That Anyone Working In ADHD Medication Uk Should Know
medications for adhd in adults - Treatment For ADHD

Treatment can help people with ADHD focus better, become less impulsive and more relaxed. It's usually a mix of therapy and medication.

Stimulants boost brain activity in areas that control attention and behavior. Methylphenidate (known as Ritalin) is one of the most frequently prescribed medications to treat adults suffering from ADHD.

Stimulants

Stimulants are medicines that boost brain activity in areas that control attention and behavior. They are usually prescribed in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). They work by increasing the levels of two chemical messengers, namely norepinephrine and dopamine, inside your brain. This makes it easier for you to focus and reduces the effects of certain impulses, such as those that trigger impulsive behavior. Stimulants are generally well tolerated by both adults and children. However, some people may have negative effects, including headaches, jitteriness or increased heart rate.

There are many stimulant medications, including methylphenidate(Ritalin), dextroamphetamine(Dexamphetamine), modafinil(Provigil), and atomoxetine. The results of the largest network meta analysis to date, published in the British Medical Journal in 2016 recommend amphetamines for people with ADHD. The drug lisdexamfetamine, now also approved for use in the UK, has an advantage over shorter-acting amphetamines because it is less likely to be absorbed throughout the day and requires only one dose per day. Patients used to to take short-acting amphetamines three or four time a day. It was a challenge for patients to remember to take and could lead to poor adherence.

A thorough medical history is necessary to determine if a person with ADHD is suffering from any other medical conditions which could be contributing to their symptoms. For instance an illness like sleep apnea, or thyroid issues could be causing your child to feel tired or having difficulty concentrating. You should also mention any issues with substance abuse to your doctor. Heavy use of prescription, over-the counter or illegal drugs could affect your child's concentration.

Medical professionals advise that children receive medication for ADHD in order to improve their school performance and to help them develop into a healthy, happy adulthood. However, the decision to medicate children with ADHD is not taken lightly by parents and can be a long and complex procedure. Many children will experience side effects, such as irritability and insomnia however, these can be managed by careful monitoring and gradually increasing dosages.

Some parents opt for private treatment that includes an ongoing series of appointments with a psychiatrist to begin treatment and monitor the progress. This could involve up to five appointments and thereafter, fortnightly or monthly appointments when the child is accustomed to the medication. This is a great option for many families who find the NHS waiting lists lengthy and for whom private healthcare can provide a more efficient and convenient access to healthcare. A detailed report on your child's development will be provided to your GP who will then perform the monitoring of the medication that has been prescribed by your psychiatrist. In some instances, you may require a visit to the NHS to continue this process so that your GP can conduct regular checks and reviews.
