To report abnormal full-field electroretinograms (ERGs) in a patient with cystoid macular edema (CME) induced by systemic paclitaxel.
This is an observational case report. Full-field ERGs were recorded to evaluate the retinal function using the RETeval system and conventional ERGs using contact lens electrodes with built-in white light-emitting diodes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was also used to assess the retinal morphology.
A 70-year-old man, who was diagnosed with gastric cancer, had undergone gastrectomy. Subsequently, systemic paclitaxel was administered once a week as an adjuvant therapy. After the tenth course of paclitaxel, he experienced blurred vision in both eyes and visited our department of ophthalmology. OCT revealed the presence of CME in both eyes, and the RETeval flicker ERGs showed a marked reduction in the amplitudes and a prolongation of the implicit times in both eyes. Conventional ERGs showed that the amplitudes of the oscillatory potentials (OPs) were also severely attenuated. The abnormal OCT findings and reduced visual acuity recovered to normal at 1 and 2months, respectively, after the discontinuation of paclitaxel. However, the flicker ERGs did not recover to normal values until 4months after the discontinuation of paclitaxel.
These results suggest that the ERGs can be used to monitor the changes in the overall retinal function in patients receiving paclitaxel.

To analyze intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucoma-associated factors in children.
A total of 4438 children aged 7-16years (2321 boys and 2117 girls) were included in this study. Various ophthalmologic [IOP, central corneal thickness (CCT), etc.] and demographic (body mass index, etc.) parameters were evaluated.
IOP increased between the ages of 7 and 9years, peaking at 9years. IOP increased after reaching a trough at 11years and subsequently stabilized after 14years. Girls exhibited thinner CCT (534.28 ± 30.84µm vs. 537.04 ± 31.33µm, P = 0.003), thicker lens thickness (3.56 ± 0.21mm vs. 3.54 ± 0.20mm, P = 0.001), shorter axial length (22.91 ± 0.93mm vs. 23.32 ± 0.89mm, P < 0.001), shallower anterior chamber depth (2.92 ± 0.27mm vs. 3.00 ± 0.26mm, P < 0.001), higher refraction (- 0.57 ± 1.48 D vs. 0.16 ± 1.35 D, P < 0.001), and higher mean corneal curvature (43.77 ± 1.39 vs. 43.03 ± 1.35, P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis assessed the following IOP-associated factors thicker CCT [standardized correlation coefficient (SRC) = 0.201, P < 0.001), deeper anterior chamber depth (SRC = 0.059, P = 0.009), shorter axial length (SRC = - 0.086, P = 0.036), lower mean corneal curvature (SRC = - 0.123, P < 0.001), higher refraction (SRC = - 0.090, P < 0.001).
IOP fluctuated in children, and a trend toward a higher mean IOP between the ages of 9 and 11years, which stabilized after 14years, was observed. IOP was associated with CCT, anterior chamber depth, axial length, lens thickness, mean corneal curvature, spherical equivalent, and systolic blood pressure.

Solid-state anaerobic digestion is an affordable and suitable technique to mitigate the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). However, as the organic loading of OFMSW is high, co-digestion with other materials can improve the system's performance. This study aimed to investigate the performance of the co-digestion of OFMSW and sawdust and study the parameters affecting its performance. Based on the experiments, the optimum sawdust/OFMSW ratio was achieved 12 with the methane production of 0.3 L/g VS. In addition, the inoculum-to-substrate ration (I/S) was investigated at 14, 12, 11, 21 ratios. The best result was obtained at 21 ratio with a total methane yield of 0.28 L/g VS. The results also indicated that I/S ratios less than 11 led to fatty acid accumulation and acidic pH condition. The effect of total solids content on the co-digestion process was also examined in this study. According to the results, as the total solids increased, the biomethane yield decreased while the biogas content increased.MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known as important regulators of gene expression and play important roles in diverse biological activities. However, the involvement of miRNAs in cerebral ischemia remains elusive. In the present study, using the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/RP)-induced cell injury model, we found that the expression levels of miR-34c-5p were significantly reduced in MCAO rats and OGD/RP cells. Overexpression of miR-34c-5p could improve the increased brain infarction, brain water content and neurological scores in MCAO rats, as well as the abnormal expression of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, COX-2, iNOS, IL-10) in OGD/RP cells. Moreover, overexpression of miR-34c-5p was found to inhibit the activity of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) by regulating the expression of nuclear receptor coactivator 1 (NCOA1), and increase the apoptotic rate of cortical neurons by inhibiting the expression of Caspase-3 and Bax and upregulating the expression of Bcl-2. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that miR-34c-5p plays an important role in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, which may be mediated through inflammatory and apoptotic signaling pathways.
If substitution of the posterior cruciate ligament in total knee arthroplasty is necessary, there are two options available posterior stabilized (PS) design with a post-cam mechanism or anterior-lipped ultracongruent (UC) inserts. UC inserts have the advantage that no femoral box is necessary and a standard femoral component can be used. The aim of this study was to compare the range of motion (ROM) and patient-reported outcome (PRO) after UC and PS fixed-bearing TKA. Better ROM in PS TKA and no difference in PRO between both designs was hypothesized.
A randomized controlled trial with 127 patients receiving a fixed-bearing UC or PS design of the same knee system was performed. this website Nine patients died and there were four revision surgeries. 107 patients completed the 5-year follow-up. Patient-reported outcome was assessed. Patellofemoral problems were evaluated using selected applicable questions of the Oxford Knee Score (getting up from a table, kneeling, climbing stairs).
Surgical time was 10min shorter in the UC group (p < 0.
