Arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are toxic heavy metals that naturally occur in the ecosystem. Their levels are on the rise due to anthropogenic activities posing threat to aquatic wildlife and humans. In Ghana, pollution of some water bodies has led to unsafe consumption of riverine fishes as well as a shortage of treated potable water principally because the cost of treating polluted water has become expensive across the country. This study aimed to assess the As, Hg, Pb and Cd concentrations in water and fishes from rivers Pra and Ankobrah where activities of artisanal gold mining were carried out resulting in gross pollution of the water bodies. An experimental study was performed to ascertain the levels of As, Hg, Pb and Cd in fish species of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis noliticus) and mudfish (Clarias anguillaris) and aquatic media (water) from the Pra and River Ankobrah basins using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (Varian AA240FS). Both river water samples recorded ranges of 0- 0.0040, 0.0060- 0.0387, 0 - 0.0020, 0.006-0.0093 mg/l for Cadmium, Lead, Arsenic and Mercury respectively. For Cadmium and Arsenic, their levels were comparable (p > 0.05). However, detected values for Lead and Mercury were no comparable (p 1 which implied a likely cause of adverse effects during a person's lifetime. © 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.Bladder cancer is the sixth most common malignancy in the United States. Cisplatin combination regimens are first line therapy for patients with metastatic urothelial bladder cancer who are eligible candidates and no treatments have shown to improve outcome compared to chemotherapy for the past 20 years. Significant advances were made in past 2-3 years and the most significant was the introduction of checkpoints inhibitors in bladder cancer treatment. We present a patient diagnosed with metastatic urothelial carcinoma who progressed while on cisplatin/gemcitabine chemotherapy in the form of oligometastasis to the bone. He has achieved a durable complete response with atezolizumab. © 2020 Published by Elsevier Inc.Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica and Ignatzschineria indica are rare causes of infection in humans and have been linked to infestation with fly larvae in open wounds. Both organisms are emerging causes of disease globally and co-infection resulting in bacteremia is rare. An 82-year-old male with bilateral lower extremity infections was hospitalized due to fall with associated right lower extremity pain. On exam, a maggot infested ulcer was identified on his right lower extremity. On day three of hospitalization, blood cultures grew gram-negative and gram-variable rods, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Further analysis of the gram negative and gram variable rods revealed W. chitiniclastica and I. indica respectively. Both I. indica and W. chitiniclastica were pan sensitive to all antimicrobials tested with the exception of tetracyclines to which W. chitiniclastica was fully resistant and I. indica was intermediately sensitive. The patient was treated with two weeks of IV ceftriaxone and was discharged with plans to complete a six-week course of IV daptomycin due to MRSA bacteremia. All repeat blood cultures were negative. Until recently W. chitiniclastica and I. indica infections have been documented only in farm and feral animals. Major risk factors for infection include poor hygiene, open wounds, peripheral vascular disease, and myiasis. Due to the rarity of infection, identification of both organisms can be difficult, therefore a high index of suspicion is required. © 2020 The Authors. We describe the first case of HTLV associated bronchiolitis to be associated with HTLV-1c subtype infection. An Aboriginal man with HTLV-1 infection was repeatedly admitted to Alice Springs Hospital, central Australia, with hypercapnic respiratory failure from the age of 28 years. High resolution CT chest findings were consistent with bronchiolitis and large numbers of lymphocytes were found in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). After extensive investigations failed to find a cause, he was tested for HTLV-1 and found to have a high HTLV-1c proviral load (6.8 %) in peripheral blood leukocytes and in BALF (4.7 %). Gilteritinib cost The administration of systemic corticosteroids resulted in a rapid clinical response; however, he did not continue treatment after discharge and died due to respiratory failure in the community. © 2020 The Authors.Squalene is a triterpene which is produced as a precursor for a wide range of terpenoid compounds in many organisms. It has commercial use in food and cosmetics but could also be used as a feedstock for production of chemicals and fuels, if generated sustainably on a large scale. We have engineered a cyanobacterium, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, for production of squalene from CO2. In this organism, squalene is produced via the methylerythritol-phosphate (MEP) pathway for terpenoid biosynthesis, and consumed by the enzyme squalene hopene cyclase (Shc) for generation of hopanoids. The gene encoding Shc in Synechocystis was inactivated (Δshc) by insertion of a gene encoding a squalene synthase from the green alga Botryococcus braunii, under control of an inducible promoter. We could demonstrate elevated squalene generation in cells where the algal enzyme was induced. Heterologous overexpression of genes upstream in the MEP pathway further enhanced the production of squalene, to a level three times higher than the Δshc background strain. During growth in flat panel bioreactors, a squalene titer of 5.1 mg/L of culture was reached. © 2020 The Authors. Background Dental appearance may influence how others perceive individuals. This study would help to understand whether young people make judgments about other young people with dental fluorosis. Aim We aimed to evaluate the perception of children aged 12-15 years about other children with visible dental fluorosis. Materials and methods A self-administered social attribute questionnaire was used to capture dental appearance-related judgments of 455 children aged 12-15 years, from 6 schools. All the children were given either a set of full-face photographs of a boy and a girl, without dental fluorosis or digitally modified anterior teeth to show visible dental fluorosis. The Total Attribute Score (TAS) was measured by totaling the participant's ratings for each characteristic, ranging from 11 (most negative score) and 44 (most positive). Results A total of 437 children participated, 53.8% (235) were males with a mean age of 13.99 ± 0.825. The mean TAS for photographs with fluorosis (25.9 ± 4.73) was significantly lower than without fluorosis (34.
