Changing Conservatory Door Handles
Switching your conservatory door handles is a straightforward job that most people are capable of doing themselves. To begin, it is important to understand whether the handles you have are sprung or un-sprung.
We stock a wide range of replacement handles for all major uPVC double-glazing manufacturers including Hoppe Mila Avocet and the Fab n' Fix. It is important to measure two key dimensions to select the correct handle. These are the distance between the screw fixing centres and the central point of the keyhole (also known as PZ centres).
Lever/lever
If you are installing new uPVC doors to your conservatory you may wish to change the style of your handles. The style of your handles will be a significant difference in the look of the room, but also the level of security you require. It is fairly simple to change a door handle. Most people can do it within five minutes.
It is essential to close the door and secure it prior to when you begin the process. This will enable you to work in a safe manner. Then, you'll need to remove the handle and the cylinder lock. After that, you'll need to carefully mark the the screw holes on the back plate. This will allow you to determine the precise location to screw your replacement handle into the hole. Once you have the handle marked, you can use these measurements to order the appropriate handle for your uPVC door.
The lever, screws and pad spindles are all positioned through the lock case (which is inside the door) therefore you cannot change any handle without ensuring that they line to each other in a correct way. It's important to take accurate measurements when buying new handles.
You'll also have to take measurements of Top Screw to Spindle Distance and PZ Dimension (centre of euro hole in cylinder). Then you'll need to choose the appropriate uPVC handle for your home. To assist you with this, we've created a helpful door handle measurement guide which will help you identify what to look out for when measuring your uPVC door.
Lever door handles are the most common type of handle and come in a range of different styles and finishes. You can choose from matte black, graphite and oil-rubbed bronze handles to fit your interior. These handles are suitable for both commercial and residential applications and are available on a wide range of uPVC door types and sizes.
If you'd like your uPVC doors to be more secure, you'll need to choose a handle with an locking mechanism. This will add an additional layer of security to the home, and is especially beneficial for doors that are external to the house. There are a number of locking options available for these handles such as keyed alike and dummy door locks.
Certain lever handle sets can be used either on the left or right side of the door. But, some aren't and will need to be purchased specifically to match the orientation of your door. Before placing an order, we recommend that you check the direction of any lever set. Some brands such as Schlage supply only reversible handles for standard doors.
Un-sprung
These upvc door handles are not spring-loaded. The latches or multi-point locks apply a force to them that allows their lever to return to a horizontal position after use. Over time, this can cause the handles to drop.
If you're having a problem with the handle, the spring inside the cassette is likely to wear out and must be replaced. The most effective way to test this is by removing the handle and operating the lever. If the handles begin to droop, this indicates that their spring strength has decreased. It is crucial to install high-quality locks and latches on the doors you replace to avoid this occurring.
The majority of replacement handles come with spring cassettes inside the backplate, which is used to hold the lever. These handles are compatible with a standard tubular or multi-point latch to ensure that the door handles are returned horizontally after use. This is a vital feature as it is more difficult to operate handles that are not spring-loaded when they are not returned to the optimum position.
There are a few handles made of upvc that do not have the spring cassette. Conservatory Repairs grays repairmywindowsanddoors will need to be fitted with heavy duty locks or latches. They are more prevalent in older upvc door handles that haven't been updated in a long time.
Once you have the correct handle type selected and it is the correct length to suit your doors made of upvc, it is simply to install it in accordance with the directions given. Be sure to align the screw holes on the external handle to the holes already in the euro profile cylinder, then put in the spindle, screws and spindle provided and tighten it up. Repeat the procedure for the internal handle.
It is important to note that the cylinders included with these handle sets do not match those used in modern multi-point locks. They have smaller in diameter and will require a larger, bulb-shaped cylindrical cylinder that is typically used on older multi-point doors. These cylinders can be purchased from your local locksmith or bought online. It is an extra cost to the new set of upvc handles and is only needed in the event that you have older multi-point locks installed on your double glazed doors. These cylinders are included with the majority of upvc handles available as they are the most common size. It is a good idea however, to have spare cylinders in case they are lost or broken. This will spare you the hassle and expense of having to order a complete set of replacement handles in the future. You could also use the tool to repair your upvc handles if the spring in the handle cassette wears out or breaks. This can happen if too much force is pushed when using the door handles, specifically by older people or children.
