Iron electrocoagulation (Fe-EC) is an effective technology to remove arsenic (As) from groundwater used for drinking. A commonly noted limitation of Fe-EC is fouling or passivation of electrode surfaces via rust accumulation over long-term use. In this study, we examined the effect of removing electrode surface layers on the performance of a large-scale (10,000 L/d capacity) Fe-EC plant in West Bengal, India. We also characterized the layers formed on the electrodes in active use for over 2 years at this plant. The electrode surfaces developed three distinct horizontal sections of layers that consisted of different minerals calcite, Fe(III) precipitates and magnetite near the top, magnetite in the middle, and Fe(III) precipitates and magnetite near the bottom. The interior of all surface layers adjacent to the Fe(0) metal was dominated by magnetite. We determined the impact of surface layer removal by mechanical abrasion on Fe-EC performance by measuring solution composition (As, Fe, P, Si, Mn, Ca, pH, DO) anure robust and reliable Fe-EC performance over year-long timescales. The mining and smelting of navajoite has resulted in a serious vanadium pollution in regional geological environments and significant influence on soil microorganisms. However, the core microbiome responsible for adjusting community response to vanadium pollution and the driving pattern have been kept unclear. In this study, a suite of surface and profile soil samples over multiple gradients were collected in four directions and distances of 10-2000 m from a vanadium smelting plant in Panzhihua, China. The indigenous microbial communities and vanadium(V)-reducing related bacteria (VRB) were profiled by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing technique. Five VRB were detected in the original collected soil samples including Bacillus, Geobacter, Clostridium, Pseudomonas and Comamonadaceae based on high-throughput sequencing data analysis, and their abundances were significantly related with the content of vanadium. Low vanadium concentration promoted the growth of VRB, while high vanadium concentration would inhibit VRB multiplication. The Gaussian equation could be used to quantitatively describe the nonlinear relationship between VRB and vanadium. Network analysis demonstrated that the microbial communities were significantly influenced by VRB assemblage, and 1.32-52.77% of microbes in the community showed a close association with VRB. A laboratory incubation experiment also confirmed the core role of VRB to drive community response to vanadium pressure. BACKGROUND Children placed under governmental supervision and staying in residential or foster care are more vulnerable to violence than children who live with their own families. One specific group of children staying in reception facilities under governmental supervision comprises unaccompanied refugee children who have fled to a host country without their parents. OBJECTIVE This qualitative study explores the experiences of unaccompanied children with regard to violence in reception facilities in the Netherlands from the perspective of the children. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING 183 unaccompanied children (N = 183) sheltered in a variety of reception facilities in the Netherlands. METHOD Semi-structured interviews were conducted focusing on several topics related to their perceived quality of life. The transcripts of the interviews were analyzed for experiences with violence occurring inside the reception facilities. The codebook that was used was based on the categorization of maltreatment in the fourth United States National Incidence Study (NIS-4) and the interpretation of violence by the Committee on the Rights of the Child in General Comment No. 13 (GC 13). RESULTS A large share (66 %) of the unaccompanied children had experienced violence in various reception facilities. Most of the experiences reported had to do with either physical and emotional abuse and neglect or institutional violence. Futibatinib cell line CONCLUSION The breadth of experiences of violence underlines the responsibility of the Dutch state to invest in the safe reception of unaccompanied children in order to protect their development, while also investing in further research on the prevalence of violence in the reception of unaccompanied children. BACKGROUND Many children who suffer parental maltreatment are unknown to welfare authorities and do not receive any treatment or support. Schools, which serve as a key social resource for child protection and welfare enforcement, also fail to identify these students. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to examine children's willingness to seek help at school for dealing with parental maltreatment and to reveal those factors that enhance students' willingness to seek help at school. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING A national random sample of 859 Israeli students (56 % girls) in 6th-12th grades participated in the study. METHODS Using a sequential mixed-methods research design including both surveys and interviews, the study investigated students' willingness to seek help from their homeroom teacher, school counselor, school teachers, and friends when dealing with neglect, abuse, corporal punishment, and psychological aggression. RESULTS About half of the students who suffer parental maltreatment never sought help in school. Of those who sought help, about 19 % sought from their friends, and 15 % sought help from the school staff in which school counselors (8.2 %) comprised the most common help resource. Three fundamental factors that explained students' willingness to seek help were revealed An active helper, positive relationship with the helper, and the importance of confidentiality and trust. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the role of active efforts by school for enhancing students' willingness to seek help and the need to devote more attention to friends who serve as a strong help resource and as a possible bridge between peers and the educational team. Fellowship programs offer career development opportunities, provide experiential training, and can be used to recruit personnel to address specific challenges facing the public health workforce. Given the potential influence fellowships have on the future public health workforce, it is important to understand and articulate the results of such programs and to identify areas of improvement to meet current workforce needs. The purpose of this literature review was to identify common practices used to evaluate nonclinical fellowship programs. After a search of the internet and selected databases, we screened titles and abstracts using predetermined selection criteria. We then conducted a detailed review of selected papers to extract information about program characteristics (program description, sector, and program length) and evaluation characteristics (primary evaluation type, framework for evaluation, data collection methods, and respondent populations) from 33 papers. We found a limited number of published papers on the evaluation of nonclinical fellowship programs, and most focused on outcomes associated with fellows or alumni.
