Best Medication For ADHD
Most children and teenagers who take ADHD medication notice they focus better, are less impulsive, feel calmer and more focused with their schoolwork. Some people may experience a slight slowing of their growth or a rise in blood pressure or heart rate while taking these medications.
Medications are available in different forms, including capsules, tablets liquid, patches and pills (such as Daytrana). Adderall (methylphenidate) is the most common stimulant. It comes in three forms: immediate-release sustained-release and extended-release.
Stimulants
Stimulants are one of the classes of drugs that can be effective in treating ADHD. These drugs aid in improving attention and focus by affecting certain neurotransmitters within the brain, especially dopamine and norepinephrine. These are the chemicals that regulate the prefrontal cortex region that is often called the brain's "secretary" because it assists with planning and organizational abilities.
Stimulants are available in short-acting and long-acting doses. The short-acting drugs have a peak effect in 30 to 45 minutes, and must be taken twice or three times per day. These include methylphenidates like Ritalin and Concerta amphetamines such as Adderall and Dexedrine. Amphetamines can be more potent and last longer than methylphenidates, but both work in the same way to increase concentration and attention. There are extended-release versions of a few stimulant drugs. They are a good option since they last between 8 to 12 hours and are typically taken daily. Some of these medications are a powder that is mixed with liquid to create a drink, and others are pills.
Finding the right medication may take some time. Your doctor will monitor how you respond to the various types of medications and will adjust the dosage as needed. The use of medication should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes support and behavioral therapy.
adhd medication side effects iampsychiatry.uk -stimulant ADHD medications take a little longer to begin working however they can make you feel more in control and increase your impulsivity, concentration and focus. These drugs don't affect dopamine or norepinephrine in the same way that stimulants do, and therefore are safer to use over an extended period of time. These medications also be less prone to side effects such as heartburn, constipation and a decreased sexual drive. The first of these medications to be approved by the FDA to treat ADHD is known as Strattera which is an inhibitor of selective norepinephrine. Your doctor might prescribe guanfacine, referred to as Intuniv or clonidine, that are both medications in this class.
There are also antidepressants that are not stimulant that are available off-label to treat ADHD. Tricyclic antidepressants from the past like Tofranil(imipramine), are used to treat ADHD. These medications are only prescribed by doctors when stimulants or other non-stimulants fail to work or have too many adverse effects.
Your doctor may also prescribe Atomoxetine (Prozac) or viloxazine (Risperdal). These medications don't have a direct effect, but they can help reduce the amount of impulsivity and improve concentration. These drugs are part of a different class of drugs compared to other ones and may cause negative side effects, such as shaky hands or headache. Your doctor may also suggest a low dose of an antidepressant known as bupropion (Wellbutrin) which is not an FDA-approved treatment for ADHD but works well to improve concentration and reduce the impulsivity. It may cause some uncomfortable but usually not serious side effects like ringing or changes in vision.
