Patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have fever, dry cough, dyspnea, and fatigue. The disease has now become a global pandemic. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between COVID-19 and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.

We collected and analyzed data on patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 by high-throughput sequencing or reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. We reviewed electronic medical records of 405 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the Third Hospital of Wuhan.

Among the 405 confirmed patients, 210 had no GI symptoms, 195 had GI symptoms, and the first symptom of 155 patients was GI. The prevalence of vascular and digestive diseases in the group with GI symptoms was significantly higher than in the group without GI symptoms. In patients with GI symptoms, the proportion with fever, cough, dysphoria, chest tightness, poor appetite, chest pain, and pharyngeal pain was I symptoms were more likely to have increased PCT and decreased lymphocyte count.
Large gastric phytobezoars are generally resistant to standard chemical or endoscopic treatments. We presented our experience of an alternative endoscopic method using a hand-made tool called a "hand-made bezoaratome" for the treatment of large gastric phytobezoars.

Patients who consulted or who were diagnosed with gastric bezoars at an education and research hospital between January 2015 and December 2018 were prospectively included in the study. Patients with phytobezoars of 50 mm and larger were included in the study. Patients with trichobezoars, lactobezoars, pharmacobezoars, under 18 years of age, and pregnant women were excluded. A 0.25 mm diameter guidewire and a mechanical lithotripter sheath were used to prepare the "hand-made bezoaratome." After the first procedure, patients were advised to consume 2500 mL of Coca Cola® or the same amount of pineapple juice per day, until the next procedure. Endoscopic procedures were performed at 5-day intervals until complete reabsorption of the bezoar was achieved. Patients were followed up for 6 weeks.

The study group included 37 (21 males, mean age 57.6 ± 12.5 years) patients. The median size of the phytobezoars was 71 mm (50-90). The median endoscopic procedure time was 853 s (380-1940 s). The success rate for endoscopic fragmentation was found to be 100%. No major complications occurred during the endoscopic procedures, but 1 patient (2.7%) required surgery for ileus due to an obstruction at the distal part of the jejunum, 61 h after the second endoscopic session. The overall success rate of the endoscopic treatment was 97.3%.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has been widely used as a tumor marker in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with cirrhosis. However, a large number of HCC patients are diagnosed without cirrhosis, and the prognostic capability of AFP was unclear in HCC patients without cirrhosis. Our purpose was to investigate the prognostic efficiency of AFP in patients with non-cirrhosis, single, and small HCC who were treated with surgical resection.

Among the 111 374 liver cancer patients included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we selected 224 patients without cirrhosis with a single HCC ≤3 cm in diameter who were identified at diagnosis and treated with surgical resection. The AFP test results were recorded as AFP-positive and AFP-negative levels.

Kaplan-Meier method showed that there was no significant survival difference between the AFP-positive and AFP-negative groups (P = .566). The same results were found in the subgroups of patients with tumor size ≤2 cm and 2-3 cm (P = .710 and .687, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that AFP had inadequate accuracy to discriminate survivors and deceased patients in subgroups of patients with tumor size ≤3 cm, 2-3 cm, or ≤2 cm (area under the ROC curve = 0.449, 0.458, 0.443; 95% confidence interval = 0.366-0.533, 0.346-0.571, 0.317-0.569, respectively).

In Turkey, cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity has been reported to be high, between 85 and 100%. CMV has been responsible for disease exacerbation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to evaluate the presence of CMV in intestinal tissue by immunohistochemical staining in IBD and non-IBD patient groups, in a country with high CMV seroprevalence.

In this prospective cross-sectional study, the presence of intestinal CMV was investigated with tissue immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, which is accepted as the gold standard method, and with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in tissue and blood.
