In the first six months of the pandemic, information on race and ethnicity was missing for half of the US COVID-19 cases. Combining case ascertainment with census-based zip code indicators may identify COVID-19 race-ethnicity disparities in the absence of individual-level data.

Ecological retrospective study for the period March-July 2020.

Population-based investigation, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

All COVID-19 cases, adjusted for zip code area population, in the early period of the pandemic.

Monthly COVID-19 incidence and requests for human services by zip code level indicators of race-ethnicity and poverty.

In the early period of the pandemic, COVID-19 incidence was higher in zip codes with a greater proportion of racial and ethnic minorities. Zip codes with the highest quartile of minority residents (>25.1% of population) had a COVID-19 incidence of 60.1 (95% CI 51.7-68.5) per 10,000 in this period; zip codes with the lowest quartile of minority residents (<6.3%) had an incidence of 31.3 (95% CI 14.4-48.2). Requests for human services during this period (volume of 211 calls and county services) confirm these disparities.

Use of census-defined race-ethnicity proportions by zip code offers a way to identify disparities when individual race-ethnicity data are unavailable.

To identify differences in short-term outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) according to various racial/ethnic groups.

Analysis of Cerner de-identified COVID-19 dataset.

A total of 62 health care facilities.

The cohort included 49,277 adult COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized from December 1, 2019 to November 13, 2020.

The primary outcome of interest was in-hospital mortality. The secondary outcome was non-routine discharge (discharge to destinations other than home, such as short-term hospitals or other facilities including intermediate care and skilled nursing homes).

We compared patients' age, gender, individual components of Charlson and Elixhauser comorbidities, medical complications, use of do-not-resuscitate, use of palliative care, and socioeconomic status between various racial and/or ethnic groups. We further compared the rates of in-hospital mortality and non-routine discharges between various racial and/or ethnic groups.

Cpd 20m datasheet These include but are not limited to social science, finance and genetics. It is typical that one collects abundant covariates along the response variable in practice. Since the network structure makes the responses at different nodes no longer independent, existing screening methods may not perform well for network data. We propose a network-based sure independence screening (NW-SIS) method. This approach explicitly takes the network structure into consideration. The strong screening consistency property of the NW-SIS is rigorously established. We further investigated the estimation of the network effect and establish the n -consistency of the estimator. The finite sample performance of the proposed method is assessed by simulation study and illustrated by an empirical analysis of a dataset from Chinese stock market. The Multidimensional Acculturative Stress Inventory (MASI) is an established measure of acculturative stress for people of Mexican origin living in the United States that has been associated with mental health outcomes in this population. We translated the MASI into German and adapted it for use with Turkish-origin immigrants in Germany. The MASI includes filter questions asking if a potentially stressful event had actually occurred before reporting the stress appraisal of these situations. Measurement invariance testing has become a standard practice to evaluate questionnaire translations, however, measurement invariance of filter questions has been scarcely studied. In Study I, we evaluated measurement invariance of the filter questions between a German-based Turkish sample (N = 233) and the Mexican-origin sample from the original study (N = 174) and could show partial strong factorial invariance for three of the four factors. In Study II, a validation study, relations between the German MASI scores and measures of acculturation and stress indicated discriminant validity. This study contributes to research on measurement invariance of filter questions, thereby providing a measure of acculturative stress that can be used in future research to understand the etiology of health disparities in Turkish-origin immigrants in Germany.Craniovertebral junction surgery is associated with unique difficulties. Type 2 odontoid fractures (Anderson and D Alonzo) have a great potential for nonunion and malunion. These fracture patients may require a circumferential decompression and fixation. The addition of intraoperative CT with neuronavigation greatly aids in craniovertebral junction surgery. We operated on a 59-year-old-male with a type 2 fracture with posterior subluxation of C1 anterior arch and a cranially displaced odontoid peg. First, a transoral odontoidectomy was performed followed by a craniocervical fixation. Occipital plates and C3-C4 lateral mass screws were used as C1 was discovered to be occipitalized intraoperatively and atlantoaxial facet joints could not be reduced as discovered by intraoperative CT resconstruction. Intraoperative CT scan was crucial to this circumferential decompression and fixation, allowed us to resect the odontoid peg safely and completely and to confirm adequate screw trajectory making this complex surgery easier for us and safer for the patient. The patient was discharged 4 months after admission with stable neurology. Intraoperative CT was fundamental to correct decision making.Patients with polycythemia vera are at high risk for vaso-occlusive events including cerebral ischemia and hemorrhage. Cerebral ischemic events are due to increased blood viscosity and platelet activation within the central nervous system arterial vessels. We present a case of a 65-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with seizures followed by left-sided weakness. Hematologic investigations revealed a hyperviscous state, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was consistent with bilateral hemorrhagic infarction. Genetic studies were positive for polycythemia vera mutation. Symptoms improved with phlebotomy and antiplatelet agents. Through this case, we aim to highlight polycythemia vera as a cause of hemorrhagic stroke and the importance of blood counts in the routine evaluation of the same.
