Ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is a rare cardiovascular disease in which some patients exhibit aortic valve insufficiency. SVA repair and valve replacement are usually required for treatment. Here, we report 5 cases of ruptured SVA with severe post-anaesthesia aortic regurgitation (AR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of ruptured SVA with severe post-anaesthesia AR.
From 2018 to 2020, there were 5 cases of ruptured SVA with severe AR after anaesthesia in our hospital. The main symptoms were palpitation and shortness of breath. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) with colour-flow Doppler showed ruptured aortic sinus aneurysms without AR. Post-anaesthesia echocardiography showed severe AR. Direct patch closure of the ruptured aneurysm resolved the left-to-right shunt and AR, and the aortic valve was not replaced.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a widely used trait for hybrid seed production in many crops. Sugar beet CMS is associated with a unique mitochondrial protein named preSATP6 that forms a 250-kDa complex. Restorer-of-fertility 1 (Rf1) is a nuclear gene that suppresses CMS and is, hence, one of the targets of sugar beet breeding. Rf1 has dominant, semi-dominant and recessive alleles, suggesting that it may be a multi-allelic locus; however, the molecular basis for differences in genetic action is obscure. Molecular cloning of Rf1 revealed a gene (orf20) whose protein products produced in transgenics can bind with preSATP6 to generate a novel 200-kDa complex. The complex is also detected in fertility-restored anthers concomitant with a decrease in the amount of the 250-kDa complex. Molecular diversity of the Rf1 locus involves organizational diversity of a gene cluster composed of orf20-like genes (RF-Oma1s). We examined the possibility that members of the clustered RF-Oma1 in this locus could be associatenerative copies in the locus strengthens the efficacy, whereas the absence of 200-kDa generative copies in the locus makes the allele recessive irrespective of the copy number. We propose that sugar beet Rf1 is a complex locus.

Plants are known to emit diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may function as signaling substances in plant communication with other organisms. Thuja occidentalis, which is widely cultivated throughout China, releases aromatic VOCs into the air in winter and early spring. The relationship of this cultivated plant with its neighboring plants is necessary for the conservation of biodiversity.
(-)-α-thujone (60.34 ± 5.58%) was found to be the major component in VOCs from the Shenyang population. The essential oils (EOs) from the Kunming and Shenyang populations included the major components (-)-α-thujone, fenchone, (+)-β-thujone, and (+)-hibaene, identified using GC-MS analyses. (-)-α-thujone and (+)-hibaene were purified and identified by NMR identification. EOs and (-)-α-thujone exhibited valuable phytotoxic activities against seed germination and seedling growth of the plants Taraxacum mongolicum and Arabidopsis thaliana. Moreover, the EOs displayed potent inhibitory activity against pathogeni plant to the environment. Nevertheless, low concentrations of released (-)-α-thujone indicated that reasonable distance of T. occidentalis with other plant species will impair the effects of allelochemical of T. occidentalis.
Patterns of gene expression can be dramatically different between males and females of the same species, in part due to genes on sex chromosomes. Here we test for sex differences in early transcriptomic response to oxidative stress in a species which lacks heteromorphic sex chromosomes, the copepod Tigriopus californicus.
Male and female individuals were separately exposed to control conditions and pro-oxidant conditions (hydrogen peroxide and paraquat) for periods of 3 hours and 6 hours. Variance partitioning showed the greatest expression variance among individuals, highlighting the important information that can be obscured by the common practice of pooling individuals. Gene expression variance between sexes was greater than that among treatments, showing the profound effect of sex even when males and females share the same genome. Males exhibited a larger response to both pro-oxidants, differentially expressing more than four times as many genes, including up-regulation of more antioxidant genes, heatofound sex differences in oxidative stress response, even in the absence of sex chromosomes, highlights the importance of studying both sexes and the potential for developing sex-specific strategies to promote optimal health and aging in humans.
Coarctation of the aorta is a rare congenital disease. In adults, the main manifestations include hypertension, weak or absent femoral pulses, heart failure, and left ventricular hypertrophy.
We present a case involving a late diagnosis of coarctation of the aorta detected during aortography in a 44-year-old man. The patient underwent stent implantation and aortoplasty. After 2years of follow-up, the patient was in good condition.
This case shows that coarctation of the aorta can be cured and that hypertension caused by the condition can be controlled to some extent with medication. Based on our findings, we recommend a detailed physical examination for all patients suspected of having coarctation of the aorta; the examination should include blood pressure measurements of both the upper and lower extremities. The case of coarctation of the aorta is not common or easy to be found in medium-aged population. Better BP control, earlier repair, and transcatheter intervention may result in a good outcome in that case.
