Transponder Keys
Most modern vehicles are equipped with transponder keys, which are also known as microchip keys. This technology is designed to stop theft of cars by allowing only the owner to start the vehicle. The keys are more expensive than traditional flat keys, however they provide a level of security that is worth the price.
Transponder keys contain a microchip that transmits an identification code using a signal when the key is within the range of the antenna. The receiver near the ignition switch in your car detects the signal. The receiver and transmitter communicate with each other to determine if the correct code is in place. This process, also known as "hotwiring" can be prevented using a transponder. The key transmits an electronic signal that has distinct serial numbers each time it is turned on.
General Motors invented the first transponder keys in the 1980s. They invented the VATS system as a way to combat the rising Corvette theft rate. Since then, a majority of major automobile manufacturers have implemented the technology in their cars.
Typically, a transponder keys will appear exactly like a regular metal car key but with a plastic cover that houses the transponder. The type of key can be cut in a few different ways, including cutting it with a standard saw, a laser cut or a sidewinder cut. Certain transponder keys come with the key blade, whereas others are entirely bladeless.
Some transponder keys may also be controlled via a remote control. They transmit an identification code that is unique along with an individual code. This key can be programmed to ensure that it locks and unlocks your car doors and turns on the engine and turns off the lights. It can also be used to activate the panic button if you are in an accident.
It is important to keep in mind that not all transponder car keys are the same, and some cannot be duplicated using the standard key cutting machine. Get an automotive locksmith's help if you are not sure what type of car key you have. They can assist you to determine which key will work for your car.
VATS Keys
Many GM automobiles come with VATS keys or Vehicle Anti Theft System. They're a great protection against car theft, and they work by sending a signal each time the key is turned. This signal is sent to the engine control module and informs it that a working key is present. The module then sets the ignition lock cylinder to accept the correct key to start.
Two wires of a small size are inside the key. If the wires break, they can cause your vehicle to not start. You'll be able to see that the security lamp will stay on or you need to turn the ignition several times before it starts. There are many ways the signal could be damaged. The most frequent reason is that the key was turned incorrectly or lost. Another possibility is if the ignition switch was replaced with one that isn't compatible or the use of an aftermarket key. This is due to the fact that a different key may have a different resistor code that is being transmitted to the engine control module.
A VATS interrogator can be a great method to test the VATS module. This tool can be utilized by dealers or locksmiths to read the key. The tool comes with an VATS code calculator built-in that can determine your key's resistance value. You can also manually measure the key and find out the value of its resistance. This method is time-consuming because there are 15 different resistance levels available for keys.
There are two types of VATS keys: a single cut 6-cut sided key and a 10-cut double-sided key. The only difference between them is that 6-cut VATS keys have a smaller head or key bow than 10-cut ones. It is important to remember that contamination of the leaf contacts and key pellets inside the ignition lock cylinder may cause a no crank condition. Do not apply liquid lubricants to the key bow or pellet. Powdered graphite is a great oil to use on the key cylinder.
Key Fobs
Key fobs are electronic device that replaces traditional keys in order to unlock a car or home. Key fobs use a short range radio transmitter/radiofrequency identification (RFID), antenna and chip to communicate with a wireless receiver inside the device they're controlling. The receiver adjusts to the unique signal code of the key fob, which matches the RFID tag's data.
Key fobs can be programmed to perform various things, in addition to locking and unlocking the door. They also serve as remote control of home automation systems such as Z-Wave. With a smartphone app you can program each key fob button to run one or more Z-Wave scenes. A key fob can activate a furnace or air conditioner before you arrive home and set the temperature just perfect for your arrival.
You can also use a key fob to roll down the windows in your vehicle. Some minivans, for example, allow drivers to do this using a key fob rather than manually rolling them up and down using their hands. By pressing the panic button on a key fob you can activate an alarm in the event of a burglary. The alarm's loud, enthralling roar will deter criminals and allow you to call the police.
The lost key fob could be found using your smartphone. Through an application that can be downloaded, you can make your fob sound a loud roar until it's located. This is an excellent feature in parking lots that are crowded, when it's easy to be distracted by other drivers or lose your keys in the crowd.
The battery of a key fob will require replacement from time to time. The batteries that look like coins are typically available at hardware stores, automakers' parts departments and a few big-box retailers. A lot of people swap batteries on their own, however it is important to read your owner's guide or online videos for the correct procedure.
Certain key fobs can be cloned easily, but newer models are typically secured to avoid this. This makes them more difficult to copy, particularly if the cloner isn't familiar with the encryption system.
Keyless Entry
A keyless entry system uses a remote-controlled transmitter in the key fob that communicates with the vehicle to unlock or start it. The transmission is based on the signals that the fob sends, and it is secured to ensure that no one can access it. Some keyless systems use rolling codes for security, which is important for fleet vehicles.
A remote keyless system provides convenience to a car by automatically unlocking the doors before you touch a handle or walk away. It can also activate a variety of other accessories depending on proximity. These systems are becoming increasingly popular in vehicles and trucks and offer increased efficiency in a variety of situations.
Installation is easy and requires just few tools. The installation manual will include an electrical diagram that outlines the exact wires that connect to the keyless system in your car. You'll likely need to take off the steering wheel cover to get access to the wiring. Then wrap the exposed wires in black electrical tape.
A keyless entry system could be vulnerable to relay attacks, so it is important to keep the key fob in a signal-blocking pouch or box when not in use. To decrease the chance of theft, you should park your vehicle in a location that is secure. To protect yourself you can also install an GPS tracking device inside your vehicle to monitor its location and notify you when it leaves a predetermined area.
